Hey hows it going ive got a r33 gts-t and my gearbox recently has been whining latetly it happens in all gears from about 3000 rpm im not sure were i could possible start and whats causing it. Though i do have to admit i did do a 2nd gear powerslide couple nights before that and i am running stock clutch. However i dont get any gear crunches or have any problems while driving or as if the gears are slipping, its just this large whine and i feel the car is a bit slower though espically when it starts to whine.

I have read on the net about other whining issues but i couldnt relate to any of them that compared to mine. As mine just happens from 3000rpm to the rev limit.

I think it is more likely to be your diff.

Usually t is due to lack of oil or lack of good quality oil. If it's the diff it will be a bearing and will cost you about $500 to fix, if it's gearbox it will be the input shaft bearing (you hope) but that's rare, or the hard casing is worn off the countershaft/4th gear(input shaft) <--- more common

So would you recommend i go to a transmission specalist and get them to tell me whats exactly wrong or is there any way i can check it my self, cause if its the countershaft/4th gear input would i have to take out the gearbox and check. The reason i am asking is its not really a problem to have my 33 off the road as i got other cars i can drive, as well i wouldnt mind saving some money.

Check the oil in the box and diff as soon as you can. If you have to drive before checking them, do so as gently as possible.

If the either level is low, top it up and see if the noise goes away (unlikely, but worth a shot).

If the levels are both normal, take it to a specialist.

When was the last time the oils were replaced?

Okay i took it out for a drive the noise is coming from the back so im guessing the diff, would you recommend me taking out the diff and having a look and if its a bearing is there any chance i can fix it at home?

Absolutely can.

As long as you know what you are doing and have the correct tools to do backlash and preload. The pinion bearings are usually available ex-melbourne from Nissan. You can possibly source them aftermarket but I wouldn't risk it as they'll give you a bearing with the wrong clearance if they don't know what they're doing.

Usually punches and hammers are the only thing required with a bearing change. If you put everything back exactly how it came out inc the shims all on the correct sides etc, 99.9% of the time they go back to the same backlash as before. The preload you must do by feel and it's not something you can be taught by text. Best I can do is say - loose enough to turn by hand - tight enough that it's like undoing a jam jar.

    • I totally couldn't do the whole kids taking up my life thing! 😮 I find it bad enough doing 45 hours in 4 days, and then fitting normal adulting life into the other 3 with no kids! As for my mates race cars, they're AMG C63 setup for production racing. The original is what has just been stripped and a brand new shell built. The original is then going away to have some panels straightened, then it will be put back together again. Then there's a third that will shortly head off to have a roll cage put in, then build it up too. And potentially a fourth to be built too... Oh, and he has two Renault Clio D class production cars, ha ha. And when he's not racing them in the Australians and QLD production championships, he's been racing one of Chaz Mostert's Lamborghini's in GT4. They just won GT4 at the 12 hour in the Lambo. We're pushing to finish the new AMG as it has its first round (and potentially its first shakedown/outing) in under w weeks for Round one of QPC, and that round is really the shakedown to make sure it's all good for the Bathurst 6 hour, which I'll be at too. Ha ha ha Working on my project is different to his, I slowly tinker and work ways to make things happen on a shoe string budget. Hes in a good position that he has a massive workshop full of parts and tools, ha ha. He also looks after me. When his air compressor died, he just needed it working, so bought himself a new one and gave the old to me. Sand blaster unit too, and a 20t pressing. And pretty much all the shelving in my shed too as he upgraded all of his (the stuff he gave me is the expensive black Bunnings heavy duty stuff)!   I enjoy working on his stuff. No decision paralysis, and anything that's needed parts wise is just there. Plus, then I get to be hands on at the track in real racing, not just club day stuff.

    • I definitely agree with you there - I never click on content for cars I would never ever be able to get or compete with/against/be seen next to. Seeing a MX5 compete with a FD RX7 will make people upset though, for sure. Even in 2.5L Turbo form which is pretty grass roots. (or at least as grass roots as classic cars can be) Yes we're all classic car owners now.
    • Wonder what the cause is, but here's hoping it's nothing too serious.
