It's kind of shit gig to get the 6 speed rebuilt not many people want to do them.

They were never meant for track work. I was going to get the whole thing rebuilt while it was off to the shop, but I've been advised by a few shops to not bother.

So I'm putting a brand new 5 speed box in.

Brand new 0_0 Big spender!

Nice work, I know SFA about Evo's but even I've heard the 5spd is the stronger box.

Could it potentially mean less gear changes and faster as a result with the wider ratios? Or does it work the other way?

It's not availability. The story goes: Mitsubishi didn't think that parts were necessary for 1 2 synchro. You can buy the whole assembly that includes the synchros, but it costs $1500 + lol.

So it's better to go 5 speed. Especially in the long run.

Upgraded synchros are plentiful for them.

Not the reason why it's stiff to select gears between 3rd and 4th. Something to do with a selector spring or something breaking off.

You have to disassemble a fair amount of the box just to put that tube in.

It isn't a 5 min job and needs to be done by a workshop.
