Yeah they're loud/sound good, but I've never heard a bike sound like an f1 car before today

probably because most people don't wind them out often enough - there is no need they are that fast.

My first challenge will be to get a decent looking 250 to start on without spending too much.

Can't bring myself to ride a shit looking bike though, even if it is only for a year.

My mate just got an 08 250cc Ninja, looks decent, but at ~$6k, can't justify that when i'll be selling it a year later

I would recommend an SV650. Relevant to learners as a market but also tourers so they resell quite easily and not much depreciation. V engine, good cc's, quality build, probably one of the better learner bikes that's stil in a not-too-committed price range.

Or you can get you license and wait for your restrictions to finish and go straight for the bigger bike, but I'd rather have learning curves on something I don't care about.

Either way you should get one :)

Yeah as much as it pains me to start on something slow/ugly, with no riding experience other than a PW50 as a kid, I know I need to start at the bottom in this case..

I'll probably get my license, won't get a bike immediately, but as soon as I can justify the expense...So I'd be closer to getting off restrictions as well..

What's the L's/P's periods and restrictions?

I was looking at SV650s and GSX650F, they both have LAMs variant, (but I may or may not of been naughty). I prefered the inline 4 in the GSX650f sounds like a baws

Goes good, sounds good, looks good and not too expensive.
