Anyone into man powered bikes?

I want to get my first one. Been told a good mountain bike to start on would be a jamis x3 trail.

$600 give or take.

Need to get fit. Advice?

Don't know too much about bicycles - but funnily enough, recently looked into it (albeit pretty superficially). $600 seems steep for an entry bike - for something that you are just starting ? Although if you're sure you'll be dedicated enough to use it... or you could always sell it even if you aren't, I suppose.

Or yeah ask your Asian labourer Alvin to build you one :P

Alvin builds bikes? It's entry level bike, but not Kmart entry, like proper branded(?) entry level? Lol

Yeh I'll be staying off the road. I don't wanna be one of them. But just suburban rides I guess and once I'm confident enough then go into the mountains.

Hence why more of a mountain bike than hybrid. I'm being told by every single pro I know to stay away from hybrid.

And was told by pro(friends not salesman) that you wouldn't spend under $500 on a proper entry with dis brakes and shimano gearing and deraileurs

Unless you're into racing or impressing people who wear lycra, go get something that feels comfortable and doesn't cost the world for when you decide to stop riding it.

Made that mistake when I bought $600 rollerblades 5 years ago after listening to pros tell me what to buy. Everytime I actually use them, it brings the average cost per use down, which makes me feel better about buying them. I'm down to $100 per use.

^ This.

Spend minimal on a bike... See if you actually enjoy it first or if it's going to be a 1 month fad that you THINK you might enjoy for longer...

You might hate it, then you've got a $3000 carbon fibre bike in your garage taking up space which will never get used.

Buy a $100-$150 entry level banger bike, then if you do want a better one later, you'll feel just how much of a step up it is :)

I hear the hardest part about roller blading is coming out to your family... most awkward dinner conversation ever.

lol.

nismo gearbox? AVCR? nismo reys wheels??

should buy back the old sunkist and trade him for that haha

+1 to spend sub $1000, but higher than $400 for a bike.

Bought a $600 Avanti when I was 16 and I still use it (occasionally). was before disc brakes became the norm. Put some slick-ish tyres on it for better efficiency too. Ride along the yarra (city or warburton) its terrific. Or even Eastlink on a weekend morning. good times. Also budget for half-decent, good fitting helmet. 1+ year warranty

Or maybe buy a nice roadie second hand?

I should have been more specific when I said entry-level haha. I feel there's a few different entry-levels, and they directly correlate with how serious you are about it. But with that as an unknown, perhaps better to keep costs down? But if you're willing to drop a few hundred more (not life changing) why not haha.

Or you know... hit the gym + buy a real motorbike :P

    • For what it's worth (I'd never looked at the button closely enough to work out it has a person on it!) with the switch 'active' double-pressing the unlock on the remote will cause lights to turn on. As I recall it will cycle through plain-unlock, unlock-with-park-lights and unlock-with-headlights as you repeatedly double-press unlock.
