Bought an 800W one today. Not sure how well it will connect to batteries but meh, I'll work it out.

Spent the last few days planning and getting stuff ready for camping trip, now the person hosting it is sick and whole thing falls apart day before leaving. What the duck do you do now? Me and the Mrs still go camping and have a mad NYE partying in the bush? Lame

Modified sinewave = good for basic appliances that aren't interrupted by fluctuations in power delivery

Pure sinewave = computers and complicated electronics, as has less static from a smoother sinewave

The rest of the thinking is just making sure the inverter has more (constant, not peak) watts than the appliances running off it.

electrical theory is what i do for a living. think ive got it sorted thanks.

and i dont get people complaining about laptops on inverters. laptop chargers are switched-mode power supplies turning AC to DC. the shape of the wave (unless its particularly shitty) should have little affect on its charging. my dad drove melbourne to Perth using a cheap 300W inverter for laptop, no dramas.

The one we got did a good job at charging phones... but the Macbook Air charger (white brick) made a buzzing sound it doesn't normally do and charged about 50% slower than normal...

We were suprised that the 6 berth campervan we got didn't have any 240v outlets, so we grabbed one in NZ from a Dick Smith Electronics. Connected it up to the Deep Cycle "Home battery" under the seat in the camper. Lovely.

Edit: Note to self, don't try to bring one back into australia with your carry on luggage... It looks very very suspicious when it goes through the bag scanner :P Got pulled aside and asked for inspection
