As for bikes, no test ride without buying seems to be the norm...bit risky but hopefully nothing is wrong

Oh I wouldn't buy one without someone else at least testing it. But turning up with the money to show you're serious helps, as does saying if it rides well then I'll put a deposit down. That said, if it starts/idles/revs fine in neutral it is generally going to ride okay too.

I bought my DRZ400 after a quick ride he didn't want me going far though, and my GSX650 was from peter stevens so they didn't let me ride it - that being said I did ride a private seller one to test before I bought the dealerships one

When I rocked up to see mine, I was pretty much buying it if it was what he'd advertised....

I asked if my mate could take it for a quick ride to check it out, and he said not til you pay which seemed pretty odd to me...But it was practically brand new so I wasn't too worried...

People just worried about you crashing it and having no recourse, cause a lot of people (stupidly IMO) cancel their insurance the moment they put it up for sale. I understand avoiding test pilots too, but when a buyer turns up with money / serious about purchasing, I'd be grabbing their licence, writing the test ride up in a deposit receipt and letting them ride it.

Yep, a lot of people also believe that it's not covered if it's someone else driving...But I read in one of the insurers booklets (would've been Shannons or JCI but I'd say they all have the same policy), that if it's a test drive it's still covered.

I told him on the phone several times that if I'm driving almost 2 hours to check it out, I'm not driving home without buying it unless it's not what he'd advertised...

lol had a customer on the phone - FOB chinese, he had to be called back by my manager (slightly FOB sounding cambodian/korean) and the dude says "awwww your accent, are you from scot-a-rand?"

Makes sense. I'd keep insurance up even if other riders weren't covered. Willing to bet a lot of bikes for sale get stolen after a "buyer" has seen where you keep it / how it's locked up, then you're fked.

The guy that bought my GSX was first to inspect, didn't ride it looked at it for 10 minutes and offered me 500 dollars less than asking price without a RWC so I naturally just took it, rocks up 2 days later with a trailer and tows it back to Geelong (he was a new learner and wanted a bike with some balls but not silly power)

My dads old motoguzi 1000cc got taken for a test ride and the guy dropped it.. then didn't even buy it but offered to pay for repairs, heaps of time later he could finally put it back up for sale after the head f**ks.. kind of annoying if you drop the bike you better f**king buy it IMO.

This was in the 90s, I use to love going on the back as a kid. (similar to this bike)
