I have a pretty low opinion of the officer in questions. I was treated rather unfairly by him and he was incredibly rude and seemed to be on a power trip.

This article actually really annoyed me with the way the writer is so arrogant and ignorant calling people who get defected "idiots" and "knuckle draggers". Since I have been defected more than once, does this make me a hoon, idiot or a knuckle dragger? I have always driven sensibly and have never done any illegal modifications to me car, but it seems that is not enough.

That's the problem with outsider perspective though, mate...and the reason why Pettett will continue to be able to pull his shit. Hardly anyone in the general public believes that police would harass people unfairly until it actually happens to them or someone they know. Worse, they actually believe that innocent people must have been doing something stupid to attract negative attention to themselves, thus the "you're all idiots who endanger our lives" comments regarding a FB page based around an unfairly issued fine for lights on a car. They actually piss me off more than Pettett, because these brainwashed twits have the right to vote...

Even car enthusiasts are guilty of this...have lost track of all the defect threads in the Vic section where some ignorant fool says "just drive sensibly and you have nothing to worry about, the police have never bothered me" - no shit Sherlock, you wouldn't be saying that if they did. Then I come along and say I was driving 5km/h slower (wipe off 5?) than the rest of the traffic when a police car went through 4 red lights (that gauntlet of lights outside Knox) to pull me over for "random inspection" (read: we've been pulling Skylines over all day, yours is one of the cleaner ones). But I'm endangering people's lives with my HIDs...

tl;dr: f**k people

Hahaha glad that pic made it in to the news story. Funny thing is that was designed to bag people getting defected, but the way the news were using it was to make it look like people making fun of Pettett.

this, Stu's cabby was targeted because he was parked and coped a defect

Last comment I saw about it was "he must have been doing something really bad to cop that" or along those lines

Stu was at Macca's....

lol stus golf cabby on the news

Won't be anymore, getting parted so he can get a Vento

It's frustrating that the things he defects imported cars for would happen on about 95% of cars on the road. If a cop pulled over just about any car over 5 years old and gave it a detailed inspection they could defect just about anyone. My dad has an X-trail with 4 balled tyres and a cracked windscreen which I keep telling him to fix because it actually is dangerous. He is the type of person the police should be looking out for, but because he drives an X-trail he is invisible.

If cops did pull over any sort of car and hand out defects there would be a huge uproar about it and "normal" people would be saying that police need to focus on solving real problems. But by picking on a minority and making import drivers look as stupid as possible on every occasion they can get, these things can happen.

Herein lies the hypocrisy of the ignorant. All those tools crying criminal/hoon and saying it's people's own faults for driving illegal cars...I bet you could find something wrong with their cars under ADRs or RWC regulations, fine them for it and then let's see how long they keep up the "innocent my ass" mantra. Just a shame they'll never get targeted because they are driving Corollas and Priuses.

    • Realized I haven't been back here in a while. Still here, still alive, still waiting for the car.  I went back again the only time last year from Oct-Nov for R's Meeting and drove it around some more, including a few laps on Fuji Speedway(in the wet, sadly). The car still feels good, but have a couple small things to address. I've been getting more parts but have slowed down still, and most of the bigger purchases are now out of the way. I find myself getting impatient more and more when it comes to getting started on this project; it's quite hard for me not being able to really dive in and start making this car my own because it's halfway across the world. At times it doesn't even really feel like I own one of these. Haven't really been motivated or had the desire to document the last trip on here or social media for, well, reasons... but here's some pics...it's also still alive and well as you can see: I've narrowed down to the last large part purchases(anything over $2k) before the engine build to be: 1) Ohlins Road & Tracks 2) ATS Twin Carbon clutch 3) Endless BBK with some custom options and 4) Kansai Service carbon driveshaft I don't think the budget exists for all of these this year, but I'll try for one or two items I think. Though, every time I look at my spreadsheet I sigh, shake my head, and get depressed just that little bit more.  'til later.
    • It's a stunning location!  I've been to NZ twice but haven't made it to the North Island yet.  Definitely on the cards but the South Island is hard to tear yourself away from too... Looking forward to see what you can wring out of it once you can get it to hold together!  Be awesome to get a low 11 or even sneaking into the high 10's pass out of it.  That's a bloody quick car that most people will never experience in their life.  Enjoy!
    • Nominally yes but I’m not really at that stage yet. Outsourcing to Japan is also a relatively good deal at the moment because their currency has devalued much more against the USD.  You would assume this but a lot has changed from the pandemic. Mechanics are in short supply and demand for fixing old cars has gone up from the cost of new cars. 250-300 USD/hr is not an unusual shop labor rate in California and you’re paying that regardless of whether the guy is competent or not. Coworkers have been quoted 3000 USD for a water pump and thermostat at a dealer on an N54. Oil changes went from ~75 USD to 150 on fairly normal cars like Civics. The cost of the oil and filter hasn’t even kept up with inflation.
    • The downside to that is that the cost of everything, particularly labour, is significantly higher here than it is over there in the Disunited States of Slavery. You can hire 3 tradesmen over there for just the Ranger Raptor allowance of a single 3rd year apprentice over here.
    • Shit. Starting to look like a car again.
