yeah, there is a cap (usually $10kpa) for extra payments on fixed interest loans. so you can only pay $200/w extra max.

Problem is if you break the fixed interest period there can be massive economic costs incurred and this is something that banks are VERY conservative about wavering no matter what the circumstance. Reason being the money was purchased up front by the bank at a specific rate when you borrowed it and the repayments are calculated based on that. By paying it out early the bank may not see the return required to cover what they paid, and it will certainly reduce the profit in any case. It is also to prevent people from constantly refinancing to a new fixed rate every time there is a drop and then leaving it when it rises.

Aka exit fees

Technically no, exit fees are fees added to a loan if the contract is broken and are associated purely with the loan exit.

Economic costs, although often charged in a lump sum at loan termination are not fees, but costs that were due to be debited to the loan over a period of time and not an addition to your standard contractual repayments.

You can also be charged economic costs if you wish to simply terminate the fixed rate and return to variable on the same product (not common)

Would be at Sandown if wasn't the busiest time of the year

Don't blame you for not wanting to go. I have heard the death grind of rb26 bearings too many times at Sandown. :P

Got an sms last night from my gym, which I've neglected of late... and been to once in the past 18 months...

"Hi Simon, we require you to please come to the club and sort your membership out as we'd like to get the amount owed cleared off the system. If you have any questions please just ask and read the terms and conditions of your membership agreement to avoid further extra costs."

I was about 2 minutes away from there on my drive home, so dropped in and asked why there was any amount owed, it's linked to my valid credit card (and expires 11/2015).

They said my card expires 11/14 so I owe nearly $300 in membership fees and disloyalty charges.

My actual response to that was "Get f**ked, that's not happening... You've made a mistake and I've been overcharged because of it", with the aim that he'd drop the disloyalty charges for each failed transaction. Instead he dropped the membership fees and kept the disloyalty charges. So I cancelled the membership, he said to hold onto my passcard incase I wanted to be re-start my membership within the next 3 months.

Some new members were signing up right next to me with the same guy, who was trying to multi task instead of concentrating on a single customer at a time. This annoyed me so I got stuck into him, loud enough that they could hear as well, asking why there was no notification when payments started failing because of their mistake instead of just letting an account rack up a large pile of fees. He had no answer, and as I was leaving he calls after me "Seeya mate, I hope you achieve your goals".

Dick.
