Maybe the CAS, put your hand on it to check

How can you tell exactly it doesnt seem to be vibrating or anything but i did the old end of the screwdriver trick to listen in and does seem to be the loudest there? Could it just be in the wrong position or faulty its noticbly louder though since after installing the belt if that helps :S

  • 3 weeks later...

My CAS had a dry(ish) bearing that was quite loud. Didnt realise thats what the noise was till I pulled the CAS off when checking everything over. It wasnt spinning smooth at all. Put a new CAS on and all good. Not sure if that will be your problem but not hard to check. Just mark where it was sitting before you take it off or re-check your timing when you put it back on

Its the cam cover. Put pressure on the top driver side and it should go away. No idea how you fix it, alot of rb motors do it.

yep. mine is the same. took the cam cover off n noise went away...

Im having it put back on atm n asking the place to put it back on with some rubber washers to stop the noise as it seems to be harmonic as it only occurs at a certian rmp range (around idle)

will let you know if i find a fix...

Well i originaly thought it was the timing belt or bearing etc... but i had it recently replaced with a whole new gates racing belt kit which came with new Idler Bearing etc

which actually appears to have made the noise louder.

Can only hear it at idle, drove it the other day got back home had a listen nothing noise wasnt there.

Comes and goes it seems. But always comes after a min after a cold start and slowly gets louder.

yep. this is also the same situation as me. was worse after changing all the necessary bits n also varies in how n when it will do it. But usually when it is cold is when i can hear mine...

Its so embarrassing that it only happens on idle cos most of the time that is the only thing people will hear around you when on the lights.

Gates racing belt + aircon + idle is f**kING HORRIBLE. I switch my AC off because if that f**king sound.

The harmonic balancer isn't the issue(I hope you're not changing it for that). The noises come from 3 things; 1) The gates racing belt, especially when warm 2) Old bearings 3) The cam cover. I put brand new everything, bearings, belt, rubber grommets on the cam cover. I RARELY get the cam cover sound. Bearing noise is gone, timing belt(the whirr when the AC is on or the engine is warm) is still there. If I do the belt again, I will NEVER get a gates belt. Stock or Nismo.

Yea i know it isnt the issue the rubber is starting to crack hince why im changing it, I rarely hear a noise when its warm or gone for a drive its when i start it up and a min later it occurs and sometimes when ever.

Bearings were replaced so only option could be the cam cover possibly but ill check again when i do the balancer. I also agree allot people have been hating the gates belt for the common noise etc I'll probably do the same thing.

    • See, that button sounds like perfection Duncan! My eyes really don't like light shining at them from a dash when I'm driving. Being part red colourblind, I've found for most cars that I can change colours on, I set everything to red, so my eyes see the elast amount of colour! I miss normal gauges in cars
    • bro, knowing the Japanese in  the 90's, i wouldn't be surprised if they shared components across their model lineup.
    • Maaaan so many "little" things  i rly hope my old RB20 would be "ok" and not too bad. I try to learn what and what not do i need. I look at crossmember at it looks different...even parts numbers are different. Wiring and all that i rly do not know...yeah someone mentioned the speedo thing. On that yoke clip. I rly do not know what can and cant be done "custom" so that is why iam asking to know and not be suprised 🙂  I know what it looks like
    • Oh, there's also the gearbox crossmember which will probably be different between the small box and the big box, and the wiring loom will probably need to be modified, because the plugs for the switches etc, will probably be different. And I think the speedo on the small box R34s is from somwhere stupid, like the diff, possibly, so you'd need to work out what needs to be done about that (assuming it is different). I think the thing you need to realise is that the front end of that yoke is a large hollow tube with splines on the inside that mates with the splines on the box's output shaft. It is a dedicated thing - not available "aftermarket". They were made to suit that box, by the car's OEM.
