hi mate, welcome.

You can take the caliper off if you want to be meticulous but wouldn't recommend this unless you are familiar with refitting them and bleeding the brakes etc. You should be fine to give them a good wire brush and clean to get any shit off them, then mask the area around the caliper with newspaper and rags. Make sure you get caliper/heat resistant paint.

There is an in-depth tute around if you want to do a search.

Just so you know, there should only be two bolts holding the caliper on. So you were most likely undoing the bolts that hold the two halves of the caliper together, which is why brake fluid went everywhere :P If that's the case, you may have let air into the system, which will require a bleed. But cross that bridge if and when you come to it, otherwise SonnyQ is spot on thumbsup.gif

i got carried away painting mine on saturday, pulled them to pieces..but the finish is good..

heres a pic of all the parts, really is pretty simple..the 2 red arrows are the bolts to take them off the car..

if you have split them you may as well take them off now and clean them up.. pulling them apart is easy just pull the spring pin and the pads all come apart, then undo the 4 bolts and thats about it.. throw all the bolts and stuff in some cleaner something caustic will eat away the grime or just scrub them with brake clean..check your seals around the piston while your there..

..

getting the brake line off is the trickiest part..find a good fitting 10mm spanner and lightly tap it with a hammer until it gives..just take care and do not strip it..

heres a finished one..it really is easy just be careful not to strip bolts..

 i dont think they're too bad for a quick job..

if you want to get carried away you could get all the bolts/parts replated or chromed, deburr the casting marks etc and powdercoat the calipers they would look much better than new..

its not worth the effort in my case...buts its good to practice, never know I may have a worthy vehicle oneday..

i did the fronts this arvo, didnt bother pulling them in half though..
