Run-It-Hard
I come across an interesting problem last event. My oil pressure would be super low (5psi) on idle when oil temp was hot (100+), as it cooled to about 80-90 degrees pressure would rise to 10-15 psi. I'm using Motul turbolight 4100 - 10W40. Would a thicker oil help keep pressure at high tempretures, or is something more sinister going on with my engine? It's an RB25, stock engine with bigger turbo, oil cooler etc. What is everyone else using for motorsport/drifting? yeah I searched and couldn't find much. Cheers, Adam. Run-It-Hard
around 70-80psi Edited October 18, 2011 by Run-It-Hard Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/380505-low-oil-pressure-at-high-tempretures/#findComment-6066952 Share on other sites
zebra
thats ok. Oil Cooler? I ran 10-60 in my 25 on track and never had pressure issues, also had an Oil cooler so oil temp never went over 90deg C Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/380505-low-oil-pressure-at-high-tempretures/#findComment-6066959 Share on other sites
Run-It-Hard
yep got an oil cooler. What was your pressure like on idle when hot? I'm going to try some 10-60W for wakefield in a few weeks, I'm sorting out a bigger radiator, water wetter and other things too (water temp was 100+ too). Last thing I'd want is the engine to let go, atleast not till after Matsuri haha. zebra
pressure was around 30psi at 900rpm water temp bang on 80deg C (alloy radiator with standard fan, no shroud & vented carbon bonnet) Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/380505-low-oil-pressure-at-high-tempretures/#findComment-6066971 Share on other sites
Run-It-Hard
sweet, well that gives me something to go off for when I put a thicker oil in mine. Cheers dude! dori34
hi there, got a spare used but working oil press sensor if you wanna & try swap it over to see if it fixes the issue as it can be faulty. mine use to do this pre-engine rebuild. now its having proper readings all the time after the engine was rebuilt, same sensor was used tho lol Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/380505-low-oil-pressure-at-high-tempretures/#findComment-6067171 Share on other sites
Run-It-Hard
Elvis, I've got aftermarket gauges, OEM are rubbish and too general with readings. If the gauge is accurate then it sounds like the oil is crap. My engine is a VG30DET with a TT pump and 10W40 mineral oil, at 1000rpm the pressure is ~35psi hot ~100*C. Am now changing to a Penrite Classic 20W50 mainly to keep the ZDDP level up. Run-It-Hard
Thought I'd update this. My oil pump shit itself today. So if you're having similar issues to what I had it could mean your pump is on the way out.
