@MrStabby: Can you define 'Rough running' for me?

Missfire/hesitation. You'll notice it when vacuum hits zero (unless you're just at 0. Since one turbo is not turning, it becomes a hole to atmosphere so the gauge wont go past zero). The car should run normally if you have some vacuum (that is, at low throttle - you're boost gauge also shows vacuum). Normal when your turbo is gone will top out at ~90kw...

Okay, so $250 and a day later... I have found out the following:

Rear Turbo blew out a bearing... I have the remnants in a plastic ziplock bag ;)

Fuel injectors are leaking

And there's an oil leak into the rear turbo...

When it rains, it pours :(

Tell me about it... Worst part is... I got quoted about $6,500 all up to fix it.

$4K+ for the injectors & Oil leak, $2200 to rebuild both turbo's with steel ball bearings. ($2800 to go hi-flow)

Seems a little expensive to me, even if it is an import car... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

New -7s should be $2200 for the pair, so $2800 for high flows is pointless. Leaking is common with GTR injectors, as is rear turbo failure...

Fatz - is $40 to stop the leaking through the body of the injector? (that is not dribbling into the cylinder). Who does that sort of repair?

Yeah, basically... They quoted $2200 to rebuild the Turbo's as Steel Ball Bearing Turbo's using the original housing. $2800 to do the same as Hi-Flow.

I'm not looking to spend heaps and heaps on the engine, it's why I'd go for the $2200 Turbo's. It's the Injector rebuild I'm not looking forward to, but it will need to be done, it's causing issues with my fuel consumption... Getting about 350km a tank from moderate driving

Also, I think that $40 is just for a new injector head.

Welcome to gtr ownership. From here on your wallet does all the talking

^HAHA! Yeah isn't that the truth lol.

DO NOT spend $2200 on rebuilt steel wheel standard turbos.

Get some Garrett -7's or -9's for that price and reap the benefits instead of burning money on turbos that are barely even suited to the RB26.

And where did 4k! come from for fixing some injectors and an oil leak?! Unless it was a new piston job or something deep. You should be able to find some aftermarket, second hand, bigger injectors for about $500 in decent condition or simply get a used set of std injectors - always available, and cheap as chips. Oil leak into rear turbo?, doesn't the factory rocker breather plumb into the rear turbo inlet? my rear turbo was oily beacuse of this too - didn't mean it was a leak though. Who did the diagnosis on the engine faults?

Depending on tunes, 350km out of a tank isn't all that bad. Dont get me wrong, its not great by any means, but I was running close to that (380-400) with std turbos on a "super duper" safe tune by Croydon! Then changed tuners to JEM and am getting closer to 420/430 with more power. Food for thought.

those prices you got quoted are crazy high !!

pick up a good set of 2860-7 turbos for about $1500 (theres afew for sale at the moment)

+ labour to remove and install turbos

then fix leaking injectors for cheap

Thanks everybody for confirming that the place was ripping me off... Or just doing a shitload of work to the injectors that I didn't fully understand, which if I could explain properly you'd probably go "Ohhh... Maybe..."

All I have to do now is find a place that isn't going to rip me off that's somewhat close to me. (Vic, S.E Burbs)

If its just the injector seals leaking then check out the DIY in my sig and do it yourself. However, its common for old GTR injectors to leak through the body, which you'll see as wetness on the injector body. I had 3 doing this, so I got a set of new 550 seimens for ~600 (ebay, from US), but of course you need to have an aftermarket ECU to run different injectors. If you're strapped for cash, just do the turbos and live with the leaky injectors a bit longer (keep an eye on them tho).

    • Hey Mark...sorry to interrupt your career change to hair dressing... but...did you ever fit the interchiller to the commodore, and if so how was it? And, who made it?
    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
    • I get into huffs with people when I suggest the MX5 looks so much better as a coupe than it does as convertible. Pretty sure I don't prefer the convertible version of anything. Good job on the hardtop! The next buyer will appreciate.
    • IMO wrap does have its uses, but like you said, quality wrap, and professional installation, would probably cost want a quality paint job does, but, the paint, if maintained, is basically for life, and much easier to touch up if required  In other news: it's pissing down here, with thunder, lightning and only some small hail "at this stage", luckily all "my" cars are undercover  I've also been contacted by a guy in Newcastle about the SS, he said he will come down next weekend for a look, we'll see how that transpires I guess 🫰
    • Nah, I'm not an a-hole, ha ha!   I do like the colour match. Some of the carbon fibre wraps are quite freaking horrible. There's one a local company I know uses, and it looks damn good! Also very very expensive per metre to buy! ha ha ha It might be cheaper to respray the roof than use the good CF Wrap, ha ha!
