Provisional Drivers To Be Banned From Driving On Friday, Saturday Nights?

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

The NSW Auditor General will recommend to the NSW Government that all Provisional drivers be disallowed from driving on Friday and Saturday nights. Seeing how P Platers are fairly well represented on SAU I thought it would be interesting to discuss.

Remember this is to apply to all P Plate drivers regardless of their driving record and number of passengers. I wonder if there is any other country in the world which treats its young drivers in the same way?

From what I heard on the radio, these suggested new measures are to combat the fact that 16% of drivers are provisional while 25% of crashes are provisional driver related. (I thought it would just be common sense that if you are new to something your are more likely to make a mistake!) I would love to see the percentages for drivers over 70 years and then compare it to the number and magnitude of restrictions placed on them (assuming similar sort of crash statistics)

I will hunt around for the actual document/news article and post it.

Have to admit I sound like an old man saying this, but P platers piss me off. So many of them just cant relax and just cruise - it's always speeding or changing lanes 5 times in a km. Last night had two overtake me (in a 70 zone) at easily 120kmh+.

As much as banning them seems like the appropriate response, it's very short sighted - without actual driving experience they cant get better.

i'm so glad i got my Ps over and done with many years ago!

there are so many restrictions nowadays and by the sounds of it, there are even more to come. i think it should be based on the history of the driver because it just makes it unfair for the good drivers. isn't that the whole point of having the 1 demerit point system for red Ps?

it's all fine for the attorney-general and pollies to make all these rules because they don't drive themselves around nor do they catch public transport. they're so out of touch with transport, but i digress.

As much as it would be nice not to put up with P players on the road, some of them need to drive to work Friday and saturday nights,

And while some are aggressive and unsafe drivers, some are crap unsafe drivers, so they need to put on the road as much as possible to gain driving experience otherwise when they get their opens they will be just as bad as they were on their P's but they wont be as easy to pick out,

I don't know what the solution is?

But this isn't it

Yeah, when I was running pizzas in high school I only really made any money on Fri/Sat nights (and State of Origin nights lol).

That and reduces the potential for 18/19/20 year olds to have designated drivers when they go out drinking.

Those so called statistics on P plate accidents could just be fender benders. It happens when you are learning something new especially something as hard and stressful as driving on NSW roads especially in the inner west.

I got off my p's a year ago and never got into trouble with police. Dont get me wrong the zero tolerance to alcohol is a great idea and while the 1 person after 11 was annoying at times was also a good idea because it did cut down on bad influences in the car.

Honestly it is such a stupid things to impose of all p platers because on the minority doing the wrong thing. I guarentee you that p platers will just start taking them off and running the risk because of such a restrictive law. Im sure as skyline owners you can understand what im saying. Always getting pulled over for supposed RANDOM breath tests only for them to ALWAYS go and check your license and your car history expecting you to be a menace just because of the minority that give us that bad name. I think this law is a little to far.

They wont be able to drive home from movies on friday and saturday nights unless you go at 4 in the arvo or go out for dinner with their partner and stuff like that. Its a little to harsh in my oppinion.

Just my two cents

Okay so to add to my original post.

The recommendation also includes that people caught repeat "offending" be subjected to psychological evaluations to determine their road worthiness, introduction of point to point speed cameras to better enforce speed regulations, "extending the current passenger restriction for P1 drivers so that they can carry no more than one peer passenger at any time" (no more driving with more than 1 person).

So I would say things are going to get a little interesting for young driver...

Good, less idiots on the road. I hate driving on weekends that's when all the spastics come out..

There are way more idiot drivers with their full licence on the road

BUT

If you compare ratios lets say for every 10 p platers there are 1000 full licence drivers so if out of those 10 p plate driver 1 is shit and shouldn't be on the road, and out of the 1000 full license drivers there are 5 shit drivers

If the media looks at percentages 10% of p platers are unsafe, and 0.5% of full license drivers are shit

But there are still more unsafe full licensed drivers on the road

But but... I don't think I'm a spastic :(

Yes you are :)

Never had that problem mate..

That's because they were the idiot P plater who progressed onto their full licenses lol..

From my experience if someone wants to be a dickhead in a car there going to do it.

im 20 so ive seen it first hand, most of my friends are responsible drivers, some arent, and those some of my 21 year old friends are worse then most 17 year olds. the more you restrict them of not having fast cars and not aloud to drive just prolongs it. if they want to run the risks they will. dont target P platers, if your going to do something possibly limit them to slower cars, theres no need for someone learning to drive to have a v6 como that they think is as fast as a turbo or v8 or want to test it on just about anything.

i had an 88 camry from 16-20 and still have it. if i reved it high at all itd burn oil so i learnt quickly not to even bother going over 3,000 rpm, the suspension gave it awful body roll which made me corner slowly and always reminded me its a piece of crap and yet i still have this car and has made me realise if you take care of something crap youll still have it in a long time which i still do. 3 grand and its outlived nearly all my friends and relatives cars.

the only problem is if i was one of these people i would of probably crashed my skyline by now, maybe give them a paddock?? its strange to see with my friends that i tell them to stop being dickheads and tell them to come to the track with me and yet there scared?? ive got a reply saying, i wouldnt want to learn on a track with everyone watching me, as if were going to laugh at them :S :S :S. (if anyone seen me at Marulan or the last texi im sure theyd know id be a prime specimen for teasing if it was like that hahaha)

i think what they should do is change all police cars to under covers, and putting alot more of them on the road. you see a cop and always check your speed even though you know your under it. if you dont know who they are you wont be tempted to speed or hoon at all if your driving near someone which at least keeps everyone else safe on the road

Think of it this way. If you were on youre probationary license, would you want this done to you?

D_I_F youre being very harsh. When I was on my P's I remember that fridays and saturdays were my main time of work. Essentially youre taking a income away from these young inexperienced drivers.

This state is rediculous. Actually this country is rediculous on how they handle their roads. NSW roads are shocking to drive on, yet they take in so much money *for safety* from speed cameras. Their doing it all wrong. Im not saying I can do it better. But I know other countrys do it better.

Finland for example. Some of you might know that they love their rally driving and some of the best drivers come from there.

There you have to have a experienced drivers course, and sit one of the hardest driving tests to get your license. Why are they good drivers with a low road toll? Because they took the steps to build a level of required expertise they want from their drivers. Rather than giving a license to every dick head. Sorry every dick head here and there. Then they say oh no no youre all not up to scratch so now were going to take away youre privelages.

Thats all bullshit.

Can you imagine the impact it would have on all young drivers if they actually had to do a advanced driving course and sit a very stringent driver test.

i agree, i saw on top gear a couple weeks ago in finland you have to have 6 hours on a skid pad to get your license, so people that want to hoon can get into it legally

D_I_F you may be lucky enough not to be targetted but in my area i get harrased as well as my friends who have clean but drive various imports. I have a clean record yet get police pulling a u turn infront of traffic to get behind me while im just sitting at the lights but to the point. Putting all p platers in that category is a bit rediculous. Like matt said. It could possibly affect young people trying to earn a living and being a productive person in society. Its a hard thing to put into affect and i think it will be very hard to police as well with a lot of people taking off p's

There is definitely an epidemic of dickhead drivers on their P plates. However I'm on my p's and I'm happy to relax while I drive and just cruise at the speed limit, and im sure theres a good few others the same as myself. I suppose it's natural for young dudes to drive like idiots because its part of being a stupid, careless teenager. So its understandable, but still not an excuse. Personally i'm more worried when I see a 40 year old driving like a wanker because you would think they would know better. Having said that, there couldn't be one adult who can honestly say they didn't act stupidly at some point during their younger years.

The idea to ban p platers driving on friday and saturday nights is a bit extreme in my eyes. Not just because I am a p player myself, but because it is true that some people need to travel to work, some don't actually drive stupidly, if the law did come in, there would be a new epidemic of p platers ignoring the law and driving around anyway, and banning p platers driving on friday and saturday nights seems contradictory to the governments support of having a designated driver for your mates so they can get home safe. Its a shame the government just assumes that all young people are irresponsible. The limit on the number of passengers under 21 is probably enough p plate restriction for the time being....

Thanks,

Dan
