Do you know how the inside of an engine works?

If you want to trash the limiter all day, the. Buy a v8 super car or Indy car.

i know how it all works - simple question misunderstood i guess...

what is the "rpm" limit for stock engine - using it as a drift car - so will be on the limiter most of the time i guess :)

I think the stock limit is 7200 roughly. What they are saying is that if you sit on the limiter a lot you will probably blow up your oil pump and hence your engine. You need to learn some throttle control so you can spin the wheels without sitting on the limiter.

A stock rb25det. Taking that at face value I would assume that the answer is "whatever rpm the stock ecu limits the engine to". I never tried it on mine.

Would a stocker take it all day? If we take the engine to be all the parts that make it run then I would say "probably no". You might just lose your turbo. A lot of 15 yr old engines wont take a limiter bashing for 24 hours which is technically a 'day'. And a lot will. Its up to the ecu really and how it deals with a hot engine. Also the engine would have to be in reasonable repair to rev like that for extended periods.

bit off topic, but what about for short bursts.. eg drags i see some people do 7400rpm for example, is that only if you have cams and aftermarkets springs or a special rebuild combo??

just interested what the limits are if you had a big turbo with the legs to keep going.. i wouldnt want to rev past 6500 very often myself though.

this isnt relative but an old guy i know says the LS1's can rev alot higher than there rev limits , so the the factory rev limits might be quite conservative..

I rev mine to 7600 every day. It's not stock though. The inside of the motor is but the rest isn't. It revs to 7600 like it doesn't want to stop. You don't even see it coming at wot.

The op did say stock.

Ask SimonR32 what he thinks about rev limits on stock internal rb25det's. I'm about to try his philosophy soon.

Mine has red line set to 7400. I can hit 7400 before I get the usual WAAPAH PAH PAH sound but I did not raise my RPM red line to hit a higher limit, moreso create a safe barrier from the harsh cut the ECU gives(PFC).

That Simon chap is doing what, close to 8krpm on his stock internal motor and stock box lol. At that rpm the harmonics are out, shit is worn, shit might be lacking tight tollernaces or something and then bam.

Think of it like this, as the theory goes, what ever can go wrong will go wrong.

You want to rev high and drift, buy a rotor. Stock rotors can hold red line for a very long time...

To start with 6500rpm is nothing. A 304 holden v8 will do that.

In all seriousness when a capacitor shits itself in your tacho circuit it actually does read 9k or more all the time. Sometimes it works but mostly it is rooted. Hence the aftermarket tacho/shiftlight on my dash. I'll be sure to post some redline footage tomorrow...

But really the op is asking an arbitrary question if he/she actually means "how much could the stock internal rb25det take all day".

I think some people get scared by rpm. Sometimes the car will take it and sometimes it will shit itself.

You need several things to make an engine last at high rpm. Good oil and oil pressure and a good cooling system is just a couple.

But really who cares? Drive it how you like and be happy. If it blows up then rebuild it or get another used engine. Sure it cost money but money is there to be spent.

Like I said mine see's 7600 every day of the week...on the way to and from work...If it dies then I'll have a pissed off wife and a new motor...

cheers for the input.. that power fc sure is rough with the rev limit, i tried setting it for 3000rpm cause i was leaving the car in for wheel alignment and i just about got jerked out of my seat lol.. and the raapah pah pah sounds niceon 7000rpm

Its fine if its for a drift car and every now and then you might hit the limiter but your better off shifting up a gear and taking the corner one youll get better smoke and a better drift and two the car will be no where near limiter, I know there are some turns where your stuck and you cant go up gear and the lower gear is to high but yeah just gota concentrate on shifting up as soon as you reach the point where youve maxed it out. When I started drifting I was to riding the limiter all day and thinking its the way to go but yeah once you learn more you see its really not ideal and its better off being in the high gear.

Simon runs his to 8500rpm with >300kw and it has lasted a long time, longer than anyone has expected it to.

Personally I wouldn't run it past 7200 unless you have a big turbo that continues making torque, then maybe 7500rpm. The issue is more sitting on the limiter breaks stuff than the revs itself, unless of course you are revving it to 8k, then you start slowly stretching parts and eventually they let go.
