Battery Charger For Sealed Lead Acid Battery In Boot

Hi,

I was having a look around for battery chargers recently, and many support trickle charging but only a few mention support for sealed lead acid batteries, or one of there other names

Is it fine to just buy a super cheap auto charger or similar? I occasionally need to charge my battery due to not driving the car enough. The alarm can drain the battery within just over a week of not driving

There are lots of chargers on ebay but only a couple mention sealed lead acid battery on the supported list of batteries...

I had a problem with the charger I got, " apparently " there's different current amp things ?

I'm looking at getting a new trickle charger with the connections wired in full time for easy access and safety.

trickle charge isn't technically correct for lead acid batteries. all lead acids should be float charged, however i've seen plenty of chargers that say both trickle and float on the same package.

the main thing with a sealed battery is NOT to charge it too quickly. all batteries produce hydrogen as they charge, if your charge rate is too high this will burst the valves in the battery and ruin it. a nice gentle charge rate will bring you up to full capacity and then the battery should be float charged to maintain it at full.

i use one of those ctek trickle chargers for over 1 year and havent had any problems

Yes I also noticed some ads mention a float charger but do float/trickle charger and then go on to describe trickle charging...

What happens if I do get a flat battery? A float charger won't work then...what's the best thing to do? Jump-start or use a larger battery charger?

I use a solar panel and regulator. I wired a plug in above the rear number plate. But I get the SP and reg free from work. Its only a 10 watt unit and we have recently standardised on 30 watter's for all our sites.
