No, he's a good engine builder, just took months to get the last piece I needed to put the engine back together.

After I had out everything in the car and paid he told me that he couldn't get 1 of the chain guides.

I'm doing a comp test tonight, if it isn't head gasket i think it's deffinately rings. I clean up all I could reach, and have now swapped the intakes over until I can resolve this oil issue. I was steadily accelerating holding the throttle at 18/20psi when I started to smell the oil again. It only hit 25 psi 3/4times I don't feel it's safe at that level.

Well if you are gonna destroy an engine may as well do it properly right? Good thread anyway and lessons to be learned.

My wife doesn't want me to just buy another motor as it could be rooted too so looks like a rebuild is gonna happen

Is the normal wiseco/cp/arias the best options for pistons? I've been told not to use a stock head gasket, I should buy a cometic gasket, does cometic make a full kit or will I have to buy a full kit then a head gasket as well.

Has anyone heard of jack brothers, I know not many Qld people will be reading this but I thought mayb someone had posted in the past about a good or bad experience with them.

Now you are taking engine advice from your wife haha Tell her how long your car will be off the road for compared to putting in another standard engine.

You sure like to stir "your engine couldnt handle 250kw". No you couldnt handle the modifications and were running more boost than was tuned for, plus you were changing boost hoses and other things.

So many stories of rebuilt engines having issues, nissan seem to do a good job.

Standard headgaskets are running well in 1000hp cars so I think your 250kw should be ok :)

All I can think is it was a tuning issue, hopefully I will have the head off in the next few days. I was more so leaning towards a rebuild for the price, the one place that has a motor wants $2800 + timing belt/water pump. So $3300ish installed. Rebuild $800 pistons, $500 gaskets + machining. So $2500ish maximum so probably $3000 tuned and back on the road and I get to keep matching numbers.

Going into an engine rebuild with the idea of "it'll be cheap" is not how I would go about things... Not to mention you haven't properly identified what caused the damage in the first place. You're just making assumptions, so there's every possibility that you put this rebuilt motor back in with the same issues it had before and it just goes bang again.

Lilcrash. There is a complete rb30de motor for sale in the qld section for $150. You might as well give it a go before you fork out thousands for a rebuild.

As for the rest of you dream boats making fun etc, take a look at yourselves.

Some guy is doing almost all the spanner work himself and making his own mistakes and you are making fun of his misfortune?

You should be praising him for his efforts.

You should give advice and guide him.

Comments like "put a ca18 in it" or "don't touch a motor again" are f**king useless and you should all be properly warned.

I'm the first guy to jump on a person for making a fool of them selves, but not in the area that is supposed to be a "tech" area.

And not on some guy who has actually rolled up his sleeves and had a go with what info/skills he has.

And especially not after he is facing the cost of his mistake/misfortune.

Not everyone is born knowing everything about cars or has the ability to borrow daddies cheque book and go to a workshop.

Give helpful advice or stfu!!!

thank you GTST, i do realise i have done a few things wrong. just trying to rectify my mistakes now. like i said above i will pull it apart this weekend and see what i can find, il post up some pics of the damage and ask for a few ideas as to what caused it if it isnt obvious. and i cant see what else could be needed for it to cost more, if its a dead piston buy pistons, if its just rings buy rings. the couple of suggestions i have had is as follows, over boost causing detonataion killing piston, over fueling causeing the oil to wash off the bore and rings are dead, faulty injector causeing lean mixtures causing detonation killing piston. feel free to add to my list.

with the rb30de, how does that go with converting to 4wd? just swap the sump/oil pick up or is a matter of completely modifying stuff?

NO idea on the conversion but I believe it won't be too hard. The drive shaft comes up through the sump so if the sump you have fits into the bottom of the RB30 giving clearance to the crank and piston rods, it should be fine. Then again you could always get a custom sump fabricated. I think the RB30 has to sit abit lower than the standard motor in your car, its a little taller so the top might contact with the bonnet. I am not certain on this but I recall something like that from somewhere, when using a 25 head.

I think before outlaying money, buying motors, pistons and what not, pull the head off and see EXACTLY what is going on. If the bore isn't damaged, there is a great chance you can recover your motor with a new piston. You have great compression across the board. If your piston is cracked it will explain the surge of oil you saw. If the bore is damaged severly then its not worth it, as you will need to machine the bore. Another option if you want to leave your other cylinders in tact is to have the bore cleaned and then sleeved back to spec and use another stock piston. That way you won't affect compression. I have NO idea if this can be done but I don't see why not...

the awd sump has different bolt pattern and oil pickup so you need to get an adapter plate

rips sell them, as do a mob in melbourne i think, there are a few about

some need external feed for the oil pump, some come with one that bolts in and around

cheapest option is probably pulling the motor out yourself, take it to a machine shop and go from there, just no way of knowing how bad it is till its open (and a pro inspects everything)

i'm back on the coast now if you want to chat, to be honest i've never built a motor but i've spent enough time reading though the forums to get a pretty good idea of what can/cant/should be done and rough costs

you can keep vct on an rb25/30 and its great if you can, r33 heads can be modified to keep vct really easily, neo heads seem to need an external oil feed

cost of the 4wd sump adapter is about $600-900 i believe

to RB30 an AWD you need a custom sump adapter to fit the AWD sump on I believe.. there is a write up on this forum, but I have to say that is a whole new can of worms.. Im not recommending this conversion for you at this stage and you will definitely need a new turbo because the 30 will choke.

As for what broke your motor, to me its clear as day and I will just say it straight out. You put the car together and took it to get it tuned, the tuner identified you had an issue holding boost/making the right power. The tuner left it at that until you got those issues sorted. You then tinkered with it trying to fix it and overboosted it a handful of times. Unfortunately it only takes once @ 20+ psi on an untuned area of the map and bang, damage is done.

Its nobodies fault, mechanic did what he could at the time and you overboosted it very briefly by mistake. It does happen.

To be honest your motor may have been overboosted by the last owner or a fuel pump died ETC, you may have just been the last straw on the camels back.

I agree with GTST and I stand by my recommendation prior. Get a used motor, put it in, hook everything up how its meant to be and limp it to a mechanic to have it tuned properly. If the mechanic identifies a problem with it PLEASE let him fix it.. I dont say this because you are incapable but it could save you another motor.

Im fairly sure any RB25 will work fine, you just need to swap the sumps over. Anyone care to confirm?

For some reason I thought you had a rwd stagea.

There are a few sau members who make/made the sump adapter required.

But being 4wd I retract by suggestion for the rb30.

Pull yours apart.

Get good pics.

Get opinions. If a cheap build is fine then do that.

Otherwise get a wrecker motor with some warranty and swap in.

If we go back far enough into the stagea section the OP ignored some pretty solid advice on how to go about getting his car set up with the HG turbo.

I feel sorry for lilcrash that the engine has been damaged but he was warned repeatedly to drive it well off boost until he had the Nistune installed and tuned. He was pushing high levels of boost while the car was running on the stock computer with audible det prior to getting it to EFI. Most of the evidence points to his own actions.

It sucks but there is no point in crying over spilt milk. IMO drop car at ERD, agree to price for tuned car with freshened/rebuilt engine and leave 100% of the work to experts.
