Cat Back v Turbo Back

It has always enthralled my that everyone, myself included, replaces the section of exhaust behind the cat, leaving the massively restrictive lump of cast iron attached to the turbo outlet.

Surely it would be more advantageous to replace the dump pipe (the lump of cast iron) with something that would allow the exhaust gasses to get away from the turbine faster. Surely that is a better performance enhancer that letting the gasses free-flow from halfway down the exhaust tract.

simple explanation but a good one.... chef would also compare it to head and white women.... it doesnt matter how big her mouth is if she doesnt swallow... oh wait hang on... nah i'll leave i'd just dig myself deeper... sorry girls forgive me.

But to be serious the idea of modding the exhaust is to allow the engine to blow out with more ease, just like modding your intake makes it suck harder... urrmm... sorry.... breath in easier.

With a cat back your modding the least imprtant part.... ie the very last stop before it goes out to atmosphere, its still had to make its way through the toilet role sized tube from the turbo. so your still sucking a melon down a hose pipe.

Going for a full turbo back ensures that you have no restrictions after your exhaust spools the turbo and makes its final sprint out the back...

Remeber, your exhaust will only blow as fast as the smaller bit will let it.... even if u put big bits after it.

generally if you know the right people you can get it done for around the same price messiah did. i paid $250 for a second hand 5" cannon, then $750 for a 3" turbo back stainless exhaust with a stainless resonator. add about another $250 for a high flow cat (which i dont have as my car is a '82) and the exhaust will owe you $1250. not too bad considering a second hand japanese brand will cost around the same price, but will most probably be scratched up + the baffles used in majority of the muffler cans will need replacing - about $150 - as the japs only use mild steel inserts in a stainless steel exhaust......go figure??
