Im potentially looking at a new ecu for my 34gtr, currently running power fc djetro but I want something that is a lot smoother. The 2 options I'm investigating are the haltech platinum pro and the vipec, both are plug in. I'm no ecu expert And would appreciate any input. I have ruled out the hka fcon pro because of cost.

running the original, Link G4 Plugin, fantastic ecu. I looked at the Adaptronic/Haltech options etc, but tuner (Trent @ Chequered) advised to go with the plugin, as did Rob @ RIPS. Also have flex-fuel setup with wideband as well, all good :)

What are the prices on each unit?? Haltech is quite a bit more isn't it?

The vipec I have found for 1650 (via online business) and the haltech theres one the forums here for 1750....if not normal RRP o both is 1850 and 2200 respectively.

Trouble Im having atm is that businesses i speak to are pushing the product i sell (which i would do if i was a business).

The thing I like about the vipec is the 4D map tuning for the GTR. Using TPS off boost and MAP on boost, to give it standard ecu like smoothness. Also has 4bar map sensor, antlag, launch control and flat shifting. Thing i dont like is you just get a board that has to be placed into a std case.

The thing about haltech is a lot more businesses are using this ecu. The fact you get a proper ecu and not a board.

Only had the pfc DJetro in for a day and not really a fan, just isnt nice and smooth to drive.

to my knowledge, the haltech has the same options that you have listed...

launch control, anti-lag, flat shiffting.

only comes with a 20psi on board map though, so extrat sensors will be required if going for big boost.

ive got a haltech pp in my 32, and couldnt be happier.

find out which has more support from tuners in your area, no good getting and ecu no one can tune.

oh, when i start and run my car, you wouldnt be able to tell it isnt stock.

if youre down near sydney anytime soon, and my engine is back in, pm me, and ill take you for a run...

good luck with either way you go.

wasted smaeshted spark.

ive tuned 900hp 6 cyl 6's with wasted spark, passed cars in botany with the IM240 emissions test with them also.

even tested wasted setup's with non wasted setup's back to back on same car, car did not even leave the dyno.

grab the vipec and you will never look back. just make sure you have a good set of coils. (splitfires would do you nice)

i was about to say, if your no ECU expert why ditch a proven setup thats worked on many cars?

there would be lot of djetro BNR34's out there id imagine and its all in the tune (and install) i suspect

particularly with twin map sensors and individual throttle bodies

get the tune checked before you bin a good working setup and fork out cash

theres no reason 1 ecu would be "doughey" and another isnt

its all how it is tuned

the only time youd expect a "doughey" ECU and not a "doughey" tune is if you lack load points, ie like a really nasty 8x8 ECU or something simple like that with limited tuning abilities

if the djetro PFC is setup properly and tuned correctly it should perform the same as the other ecu's

in the tune, as Trent was advising me to go the D-Jetro had i not wanted to go flex-fuel etc etc - D-jetro is more than capable.

Vipec is a rebadged Link, so they're exactly the same. I just preferred to buy direct from Link as they are Christchurch based and unfortunately lost their HQ in the earthquake :(

    • Let's hope that's not a copy pump either. There were so many copies of them back in the day.
    • Damn it, I was at work last night, and stayed in a room there during the storm with the car outside, but undercover, I just went downstairs and well....there was a large steel locker that has come from some place last night, it wasn't anywhere I could see yesterday, and yeap, it landed on the fraking car....of course it did..... LOL So, I'll need to take it back for paint and panel, luckily it was only the boot that took the hit, so it could have been worse Serves me right for staying at work and getting on the cans with some of the boys
    • Yeah, really happy with how it all turned out As for aftermarket lip, nah, I'm not really a fan for practically reasons on a street car that gets driven everywhere  I did have the full lower kit on my 2015 STI, but found the front lip scrapped alot, even at stock 4x4ish ride height As the NC sits now, with the lowest point of the car at 110mm, so just legal, some steep driveways and steep speed humps will still "just" scrap those little plastic OEM air dam thingies on the undertray just before the front wheels
    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
