Hey guys,

I have a bit of a dilemma.

I was planning on purchasing an R33 GTST next February, hopefully something with a few modification i.e exhaust, timer, upgraded intercooler. I was looking at spending about $25,000 for a car with rims and the above modifications.

The more I think about it though is perhaps I should buy an R34 GTT instead. As they are newer and desipte the Skyline's reputation as a superb piece of engineering, I am afraid of things going wrong with an almost decade old R33.

Is my thinking rational or am I being stupid?

The best price I have seen asked for a R34 GTT coupe was $28,000. This kind of money seems to get you mostly non-turbo four-door vehicles. I don't know how much an R34 GTT will cost next year so it looks like I'll have to wait.

If anyone can present the pros and cons I'm not aware of that would be great.

I apologise if everyone has heard this diatribe before!

Steven

Humm hard to say really again it comes down to the type of car you like and really do want.

I think the R34 has the best style out of all the skylines.

From what I've heard the R34 cars don't really have any mechical problems as they are still pretty new.

The R33 can is also pretty good as well, though there are some things to look out for like the gear box etc, but these are things that would be normally going down hill after 100,000 or so has been put onto the gear box anyway so these are reall more wear and tear than mechical problems, but they could cost quite a bit down the track which is what you want to look out for.

My thinking is that the R33 is probably going to hang around the same price, but the R34 might be slightly dearer than it is now.

a $30,000 R34 won't have a turbo and could be a 2 or 4 door, I've seen a non turbo 2door R34 going for $30,000, looks alright and says it has 20,000klm to 40,000klms on the clock.

If your've only got $25,000 to play with I wouldn't bother thinking about a R34 as the starting price for the car alone is already above that, and the R34 model has the least amount of cars made for it out of all the skylines, that's why I think it will probabbly go up rather than go down.

Some experts are saying it will go down but not by much as more R34's come over or more come up for sale.

So the non-turbo R34 may come down to $25,000 but that would be for the car and none of the extra's.

If you are going to compare them, compare apples with apples.

1 - the R33 preceeded the R34, so why would they be 10 years appart in wear and tear? - yes a series 1 is nearly 10 years old, but why not look for an end of production series II which will probably be only a year or 2 different from your R34.

2 - To compare a non turbo R33 to a turbo R34 ??? (whats with that) If you want a car just for its looks then its a syle choice (whatever you prefer, but the R34 is the bomb), but if you want it to drive in, then dont even think about a non turbo, (otherwise just get a toyota corolla and save the cash for your shrink :-)

The build quality on these cars is excellent, and a 10 yr old skyline is comparable to a 4 year old falcodore so dont be put off in the same way you would if it was a domestic vehicle.

hope this helps

Nissan's and Honda's are very well engineered cars. If you put time and effort into these cars, drive them with respect, they will last you a very long time. If you are unsure of a car, don't buy it... But you shouldn't have a problem finding a low km, mid 90's R33 GTS-t that is well maintained and looked after (most japanese are pidantic(sp) about there cars... after all, who is going to buy a Skyline and not look after it???)

My $0.02

Ya $25k would just get u into R34 without turbo territory. Not sure if these can be imported, maybe not NA R33s can't be as far as i know.

At that money your best of getting a series 2 R33 GTS25t if you want a car thats less than 10 years old. These were in production till 98. You may also have $ left over for insurance which can be several thousand $. I have a 95 and its sweet.

Guess this assumes that u want a turbo car for the performance otherwise a NA 34 may suit u. Still think youll be scrapping with $25k even without turbo. Its wise to give yourself a buffer between what you've got to spend and what u spend. Just in case.

i would actually go as far as to say that you would be able to find a nice turbo 34 for 25 grand in about a years time. i really dont think 34 prices are going to go up. I didnt think 33 prices would drop as much as they have! now you can get 33 turbos cheaper than some 32 turbos!

everything comes down in price. 34's not so special that it will go up. Look at 34gtr, not too long ago these were 110grand, now you see them as low as 75grand.

get the 34, newer shape, newer car, better car. And if your a few G's short just save a bit extra to get what you want.

my 2c

25k can either get u an R34GT (non-turbo) or a series II r33 skyline...

i had exactly that budget to buy a car and i faced the exact same dilemna u did.

I was thinking if i save up for another 6months of so i can afford a R34 GTT or an S15 which i also wanted at the time.

But then like seriously, a skylines a skylines and i dun regret buying my series II skyline, i actually am glad i bought this one so that i have sometime to look forward to in the future. I'm plannin to start moddin it and drive it till i grad and den wen i get a proper job..den i will move on to the GTrs or the GTTs.

Trust me..i no exactly how u feeel...

whether its an r31, 32,33,34...a skylines a skyline and u will still gain the same amount of respect from other skylines drivers and also from people who know jack shyt about cars. I can never imagine myself drivin nethin but a skyline now after owning one.!!

so get what u want..but think about this...u wait 6months or a yr for the r34 but maybe at the time there may be another car which is more valuable....more worth buyin etc. etc. and it may be a lil more expensive..so u may end up waitin even longer..

just buy the sII r33 i say and say in a few yrs time..wen u earn more dosh...sell the line and get an r34...move up the ladder...coz its hard to move down wen ur goin from the top.

Was in the exact situation (well.. close) not long ago, cept the budget part... I went wif the 34 mainly cause of the following reason:

1) Like the 34 shape better than 33 series 1 or 2

2) Its a new car and hope that there isnt much that can go wrong with the car

3) Still in limited supply.. so its more standout than a 33

4) More boot space

5) More room in the car in general (?) well it feels that way anyway.

6) Love the dash more than the 33 (ie. the center console part).

7) 34 neo engines was suppose to have a lil bit more low end torque?

Bottomline is go 34GTT if you can afford it and get a reasonable good quality one.. or a 33 gtst series 2. The choice is when you buy, what you find at the time and also the budget at the time.

Good luck to ya. :)

i think its about personal opinion....

personally i wouldnt spend a $25000 on a r34gtt cause u will get a rough one....

i would buy a series 11 standard for about $22000 in feb im sure they will go down to that much and then put custom specs on it.

i would get a s15 ova a r34gtt

    • Purchased a NC MX5 a while ago Basic suspension mods done, BC coils and Whiteline sway bars  New DBA calipers, discs and pads Added some 17 x 8 Konig Decagrams with PS5's Added some typical NA bolt on's, i.e. full exhaust and intake  Added 0.5ltrs with a MZR2.5 swap, nice bump in torques  Found a detachable hard top which is locked in for a colour match with my local paint shop in Feb 25 The little thing is awesome, I drive it everywhere, it handles like a dream whether I'm up it or just cruising  But now,  because I'm a idiot, I keep looking at turbo kits....... did I mention I'm a idiot Why is dose so appealing
    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
    • Nissan needs to forget about building SUVs in every size possible and bring back the damn Silvia/200sx duo to compete with the 86/brz. Maybe with the Honda type r motor pointing the right way
