A bit late to jump in the convo here but $2000 for gear oil?? Really?? I bought Redline Gear oil for $90 for my manual box.

I know you guys are talking about a CVT box - but am I missing something here? Should I be using a different gear oil?

CVT fluid is very very different from manual transmission oil. If you put standard gear oil in a CVT you will kill it, if you put standard auto transmission fluid in a CVT, you will kill it.

To make matters worse, the extroid CVT on the V35 requires its own unique CVT fluid, which I believe only Nissan can supply. so big $$. It is even different to the xtronic CVT fluid used in the Maxima/Murano. (mainly because the transmission internals are very different)

Although my Wife drives our J31 Maxima with the CVT, and if I had to drive an auto, I would pick a CVT any day over a standard auto (ignoring potential repair costs), although I have to admit, I haven't driven a car with the new DSG transmission.

What were the symptoms? What led you to believe that the transmission was the problem? What code did the consult throw up and what steps did you perform to attempt to fix it?

i took it to nissan hornsby they put it on the computer and told me the Transmission is gone and they had 3 different cars were the mechanic had put in the wrong tran oil in them and each cost 15 k to fix by a 3rd party mechanic and he had to get the transmission imported from japan..

They said the transmission new is 30 k .

the sympthems , the car started shutting down when it was cold started after 3-4 meters of driving that was it for couple of weeks. then it started playing up and skipping while cold started for the first 5-10 min.

and eventually one fine day after about a month it wouldnt go past 30 km no matter how hard i pressed the accelerator.

and just to let u know 2 month ago my window motor broke, i called everyone no one had it , i found some guy in adelaide who said he can import it from japan for 550 bux and it takes 3 weeks. one whole day googling and 20 calls later i found a car that was in a wrecker and they took out the motor for me , even then the motor wasnt right for some reason and the wires had to be switched to work.

too much pain for a freaking window !!! dont you think...

Without further info, we don't even know if the issue was the CVT.

I sure hope he responds with further info to help other people.

IT was CVT issue as per nissan hornsby Computers, like i said they said they rang a 3rd party CVT specialist who had 3 of these cars there by insurance (I am not sure why insurance was paying for it we spaculated that the Mechanics's insurance was paying for it cus of the wrong oil applied , i dont exactly remember how we got to that conclusion but). the mechanic had to go to japan buy a car from wrecker grab the transmission and bring it to australia use the parts from that and fix the transmission in these cars with the cost of 15 k each and i am guessing another 2 k for oil.

the oild was quoted at $560 a can of 4 litter the car needs 10 litters hence 3 cans around 1800 dollars for the oil and the change 2 k.

I had nissan tell me the reason it stuffed had nothing to do with the oil change because thier maximas and other cars have the transmission oil for life unless the car is used to towe caravans etc..

I then had another mechanic tell me over the phone that the reason the transimission failed was cus the oil wasnt changed!

Mind you the car had done 106 000 km by the time it got stuffed and from wat ppl say the oil needs to be changed at 100 k km ! so i went 6 000 km over the limit ! yea right !

I think you are correct, if the manufacturer specs a fluid change at 100,000km it is highly unlikely the transmission will fail because you let to go to 106,000km. there is something else that has caused it.. component failure.. severe abuse by the previous owner.. etc..

The CVT in the maxima has no specific distance between fluid changes, but it is also not a blanket 'life of the vehicle' component either, there is a counter in the TCU that Nissan can read with their consult, once this reaches a certain figure, the fluid needs to be changed. but I have heard of several cases of Maxima owners with over 100,000km on the car and the counter is only about half way to the specified figure.

But you can't really use the Maxima CVT as a comparison, the internals are very different to the V35 CVT, and it runs a different fluid.

You did the right thing Rami, you investigated it thoroughly.

Did Nissan drop the oil by any chance? Was it the correct one is what I'm getting at?

And did they give you the fault code/s the car was throwing up.

I note that yours was an earlier model as well, I haven't heard of any of the v2 CVT's having the issues - anyone?

A bit off topic, but just to clarify, I no longer own a GT-8, I sold it because of our circumstances and the trans issue played no part in the sale and although it took a long time, I still got the price I wanted. I did however feel I had a responsibility to tell the potential new owner about potential issues with the CVT as have been reported here over the years, but for me, I otherwise just drove, maintained and sold it as a normal car. However it was easily the best car I ever owned and the potential CVT issues were just another puzzle that I got hooked on cracking. It may be fine for some to just give in and spread the rumour and just blame the CVT and in the process effectively kill other owners resale values without proof. You really need to watch what some of you guys say in these forums. Think about how you would feel if someone was trashing your investment. Why not be constructive instead? By all means post the facts of issues, but lets work together to definitively work out what goes wrong and how to help others prevent it.

It may be fine for some to just give in and spread the rumour and just blame the CVT and in the process effectively kill other owners resale values without proof. I didn't really think anyone in this thread has spread rumours or made un-substantiated claims? From what I can tell, the OP has been the harshest critic of the V35 CVT in this thread, and justifiably so, his failed on him and probably left him out of pocket quite a bit.

g'day,

if you have a nissan with as EXTROID CVT transmission make sure you dont use any other oil but the original nissan extroid cvt trans oil, not even nissan ns2. no additives, ONLY USE nissan extroid cvt trans oil.

if you made a mistake of placing a non extroid trans oil, stop driving the car before you distroy the box.

if you had the cars transmission serviced by a non nissan service center, you go back to the mechanic and as them what oil they use and if possible show you the container. most workshop wont throw the container away (for the price of it they keep it as a display)

if you have a faulty cvt transmission i can help. EXTROID CVT cost roughly $6,000 to fully rebuild with 12 months warranty.

EXTROID CVT fluid im currenly buying them from japan for $450 per can, you'll need 2 = $900.- plus courier cost to you.

Rami seems to have gotten a bit heated about the issue.

I think that it comes down to how the car has been treated in its life, before assumptions can be made about the robustness of the g/box.

I myself have been driving my car for about 2 months now with a HKS turbo kit installed and there hasn't been any issues.:thumbsup:

As for all the other things that Rami was on about, ie. window motor, try looking at (plug) Import Monster, I have gotten most of my parts through them and for small items send it via EMS and you will have it in a week.:whistling:

Can everyone stop jumping to conclusions about this g/box as mine is proving how capable they are.:cheers:
