My friend purchased his twin turbo 300zx, and his 3L V6 twin turbo engine instantly made me jealous.

I've done a bit of research and it looks like the VG30DETT will stack up to an RB26DETT except the RB will rev higher and the VG will provide more torque. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

So I'm looking at purchasing a GTS4 and doing a sleeper build... The VG recently came back up in my research and it's really got my imagination going...

Before I get too enthusiastic and put heaps of money down on it, can someone tell me if this thing will be able to be road-registered?

I was going to pull a dodgy, get the GTS4 registered in QLD and do the conversion after, that way I don't have to get it checked, but the police will want to check under the bonnet and even the car illiterate guys will be able to tell something is seriously different.

Anyway, vg30dett powered awd r32, thoughts?

Also, do you think an RB26/30TT would be better than a VG30DETT?

See I'm not doing it myself, I was going to get Unigroup or something to do it for me... my knowledge isn't that vast :\

I was slightly concerned about the engine bay... bit worried about hte heat in there as well.

Also, you're saying I'll have problems keep AWD? How's that?

I thought the VG30 would bolt onto a 32 GTR gearbox with a bit of fabrication... but like i said, I haven't got heaps of knowledge.

the awd setup runs a diff in the sump

Not wanting to sound totally oblivious, but the way I understand it is a the sump is where all your unwanted oil and shit goes...

What do you mean there's a diff inside the sump? Is it actually swimming in the liquid or is there a diff where the sump goes.

The AWD sump is going to be the real stopper. If you want to keep AWD you are going to have to seriously re-design the sump. I'm pretty sure there are no AWD VG30's and I doubt you will be able to adapt your RB20 AWD sump onto the VG. I think it would be much much less expensive to buy a 300ZX, I doubt anyone will be able to do it for less than $10 000-$15000.

There is a housing on the side of the sump that houses the front differential. Also, the drive shaft to the LH wheel goes through the sump (through a tube through the sump).

A RB20 sump won't even come close, because it is 6 cylinders long, while the VG30 is only 3 cylinders long!

I expect you will need a custom bell housing to allow the RB gearbox to bolt to the VG block.

LOL at engine out for oil change.

Also, don't bother putting a 26 in gts4, easier to buy a GTR.

But buy a gtst and dump VG30 in, less headf**k than trying to make it 4wd if you want to be different.

you realize every time you want to do an oil change on a VG you gotta take the engine out

sounds like an absolute head f**k when you can just put a 26 in with much easier gains

:\ you're joking right?

Thanks heaps man... Exactly the info I needed to read to get my head around it :)

I don't really want to put the 26 in the GTS4, I was just wondering how the VG stacked against the RB.

I can get the gts4 for around 3k with a f**ked p/s rack and a blown engine, so I thought I might as well buy it (because everything else seemed fine) and engine swap for something different.

VG seems like way too much trouble... might stop the search for now, sell the 33 and use the money to purchase a GTR.

A smarter choice would be the VQ25det or VQ35de. Both came with awd from the factory.

the diff is on the wrong side though

Why VG30 I still dont know...you could build a VERY angry RB34DET for less that it would cost to have a stock VG30 thrown in the car

The car was going to cost $3k, the engine was around $1500, and I bargained 4k to put the thing in. Wouldn't have been too expensive.

RB34DET would be interesting... never heard of that before though :\

Bored out rb30?

In this case, buy it, take the front end out - the whole she-bang. Put GTST K-frame blah blah blah and put in VG30 + box, modifiy the tailshaft to suit.

    • UPDATE: Hi all!  As we are getting towards the end of this thread where I’ll showcase final dyno numbers and graph, I wanted to provide an update. Tao from HyperGear has done an amazing job building the custom divided T3 housing for the G30. Communication was flawless, price was great, and now the housing is estimated to arrive in 7-10 days! Very very pleased. I must add, if someone is looking for an affordable turbo and end up reading this thread, I would recommend HyperGear. Genuine brands are the way to go as their proven reliability, predictable performance, and there’s a plethora of information available for specs, flow, and more. This HyperGear recommendation is based on their excellent communication, dedication, and willingness to listen to their customers. I particularly liked their ability to create custom adaptations tailored to specific needs, which is a HUGE benefit over other brands. And if we consider the HyperGear provided dyno results, it adds reassurance knowing their turbos can compete against genuine brands. Next update will be after the dyno!
    • I've previously seen people post up "dress up bolt kits" for RBs but don't remember seeing them specify the full contents. I can only really suggest you grab the verniers and start measuring, and keep in mind the cam cover and timing cover bolts are both quite specific with a wider unthreaded section where the bushes sit, that will make it hard to get aftermarket replacements which tend to be all thread (set screws) or for longer bolts a flat section with a shorter threaded section at the end
    • I believe there was a similar one posted by @duggyphresh. They were re-routing their battery positive cable in the way I am also trying to achieve. Sorry, I’m new to this forum, so was a bit late to the party by a few months and so reignited the old thread, as I wanted to know how they got on with doing it.
    • Wasn't there a thread on this very subject just a few weeks ago?
