Hey guys,

http://www.customgadz.com/store/product.php?id_product=16

I have sent a few emails back and forth with the guys who will be releasing the above very soon (The IPhone version is already available) and it looks like it may have potential. Still waiting to see a diagram of how it all wires up, but they are still working on that. Basically from what I understand, this unit has the capability of controlling your phone via Bluetooth and should only require you to able to output the video from your phone onto the existing OEM touch screen (which you can do via the AUX inputs in the centre console, depending on what phone you have).

They supply a switch that is installed on the 4-wire output from the touch screen and will switch the touch screen control back and forth between the OEM system and the phone. From the responses that I have been getting, it seems as though this 'should' be able to work but I will probably order one, install it and then let anyone who is interested know.

I don't know how interesting this will necessarily be for everyone but my Samsung Galaxy S2 comes with a pretty damn cool Sat Nav App (is actually better than my 1 year old Garmin Nuvi) which would be nice to have on the bigger screen, as well as the ability to do Google searches, watch youtube videos, basically anything that you can do on your phone, would be pretty useful. For my Samsung S2 I will need an HDMI to Composite converter though which will cost an extra $70 - $150 depending on the brand.

Does anyone see any OBVIOUS issues with this being able to work on the V36 system? If so let me know and I will ask more questions or else I will get it soon and give it a go.

Hey this is extremely interesting, iIn fact it is exactly what I have been looking for! I love the functionality of the iPhone & have been looking for a deck that can do this. WIth most high end decks costing a small fortune & coming with DVD players, expensive GPS etc this will save us a fortune to use this instead. I don't even use the disc player in my car let alone want to watch DVD's. The future is about digital storage not optical media.

My only problem is that iOS 5.01 (& the iPhone 4S which is what I have) has not been jailbroken yet. For the moment that means that I cannot try this system out. A touch screen able to control all of your apps & to utilise the TomTom iPhone GPS app would be awesome. So the question is who is going to try this first?

I wish this could be retrofitted to my Sony XAV72BT... I've got an android tablet and phone and use the phone as a GPS

I'm surprised there isn't a media PC in 7 inch in-dash format running Android yet!

I have also spoken to the person in Australia who is supplying this mod. I really would like to try it out although there may be a few other options. For me I have an iPhone 4S which for the moment cannot be jailbroken. This means that this solution will not suit me until I can do that.

I do have another few ideas in relation to this. The iPhone 4S will "mirror" its display screen to another screen via HDMI & a special cable. This means that apps such as the TomTom GPS could be output. I believe that the factory unit only has composite in? If this is the case then an iPhone to composite cable could be used but it will only display apps that are able to utilise "TV out" so apps such as the TomTom won't be displayed. I was wondering if I could get a HDMI to composite converter so that the "mirror out" can be displayed on the factory screen? Again this may not exactly utilise the mod being discussed but I am curious.

Another thing that I would be interested in is swapping out the factory screen for another aftermarket one. However I do not know if all of the standard display information will still be available. If it can be done then a much higher resolution screen could be used along with a HDMI input. This would also allow for a better display & potentially HDTV channels which I believe are not available at the present with the standard screen. Please correct me if I am wrong because I am new to this & searching for information. If anyone has a link or information about the factory screen can you please advise us?

I was also thinking that if the screen can be changed over then a touch screen could be utilised along with the mod we are discussing. I was thinking of starting a new thread on this as I have searched the forums & can't quite find the information that I am after. I am keen to do something with this. If anyone has changed a screen please tell us what you know. Hopefully I can get started on this & give forum members an update.

    • But, do I have to? 😬
    • While doing my tailgate struts I found some rust. Also replaced my bonnet struts. Such a cool satisfaction with that job.
    • So I removed as much as I could from both sides. The shop vac did a great job of clearing 99% of it. I got it all as clean as I could and then absolutely drenched the whole lot in the rust converter. Tonight or tomorrow I'll hammer it again. The cavity must be close to 400mm in length and surprisingly I was able to get it right to the back.  I'll quickly reassemble and then pretend I never saw it. I'll post pics (for me to ignore later) soon.
    • Yea she is a hoot to drive
    • I have always resisted the urge to go silly. 8" wide wheels and street friendly spring rates? Check. (Let's not talk about the steadily increasing spread of spherical joints across my suspension!!) Stock turbo, run at 12 psi? Check. Lasted for~?10 years before it died. Highflow put on rather than seizing the opportunity to go G45. You don't need 300 rwkW, let alone the more massive numbers that seem to be essential these days, to have a car that is already way too powerful and fast for a streeter. ~250rwkW is fine. I've never exceeded 200, although I will sneak up above it if and when I manage to get my finger out and do what needs to be done to use the highflow's capacity. You don't need $10k worth of CF bits glued onto the outside. You don't need razor sharp ankle cutting front splitters. You don't need the car to be 2" off the ground. You don't need flawless paint, mirror finished wheels, brand new indicator lenses, etc etc. All these things just make the car impractical and will cause you pain when they get damaged, which is inevitable for a street car. A few nice additions are good. Good seats are good. A nice stereo is good. A/C is good! (46° on the road yesterday and my A/C is degassed again. Was moderately traumatic driving home!) The main reason I stick with a mildly modified old Skyline is that I have had it for >25 years, the mods are the rolling result of 25 years of things dying and being upgraded opportunistically, coupled with a few "just 'coz" ones. And I hate almost all modern cars. If I was a young buck starting out now.... I wouldn't bother. Cars have a few years left where there is any possibility of interest or fun. Thereafter there will be no such thing allowed or possible. Any time, money and effort spent now on a project would just be a waste.
