Right once again my car has plagued me with problems, Ive recently not been given a warrant of fitness due to the loudness of my exhaust and need it checked. Anyone know an easy way to text it and get it passed? or if it does fail for being too loud, can anyone think of a better way to trick a pass or get a pass with a muffler. The only way I can think of if it fails is making a slip joint and putting the old muffler on for the wof and then getting my dumpy back on afterwards. Other than this any cheap ideas? can you get cheap silencers for dumpys?

PS im in NZ

CHEEERS =]

Ha its just I like my loud exhaust, legality is an obvious issue but Id like to be able to revert back to as is. Essentially I suppose I am looking for a Temporary solution.

Im afraid I made the mistake of going to a place that did not have a bar of my car.

Talking to one of my mates though he said it could be worth in future going to a high class WOF place (or well as high class as they get) find out major problems if any and then head out to a cheapo one to get the pass. thoughts?

so you got in trouble for the exhaust being too loud, so you want a temporary "get out of jail free card" then go back to being how it was again, which you may or may not be pulled over again for it being too loud, then going through all of the same hassel again

then again you could get a dodgey slip to say its fine how it is, then the authority checks on who said its fine, then that company gets fine/ trade license canceled because of something small

is it really worth the hassel for yourself and/or any company you take your car too for an exhaust issue?

the correct and cheapest way is to take it to an exhaust place and say "this is too loud make it quieter legally"

cant afford it? catch a bus, eat 2 minute noodles until you can

this. a dodgy slip doesn't make it legal if they can easily prove that it isn't legal. you might as well just hand write something on a napkin. no point going to all the trouble of getting a temporary solution made up if you can then get fined 10 mins later. i should also mention that a lot of places also take pics of the cars they pass so that if the owner then makes changes which make the car illegal and tries to say that it was passed like that, the workshop can prove that it wasn't like that when it passed.

Ha and this my friends is why I come here first. Yes id love a temporary solution to keep it loud. but if thats just not going to happen I need to find the next best solution to put into action. So if it is too loud. What next? what is involved in making it quieter? Im not saying I would do it myself, but its nice to know whats involved

Best solution is get over your attention seeking habit and go legal.

As most of you said above you need decent mufflers/resisnators,simple but a bit of effort.Ive built many huge straight through systems for fast street cars and race cars, which have passed noise tests. The key is to make them as long as possible, and as many as you can fit.Mufflers fitted in different positions in your exhaust will work at different rpms,so more will work over a wider span of rpms(this is a science).Turbo cars are easier because the turbo actually works as a muffler as well.No offence but CANONS are a joke!!!Also stainless systems are always a few DBs louder. If mufflers arent straight through then you will loose power, simple as that.Have you noticed that any decent race car has custom built ones?Thats because you cant really buy anything decent, again no offence but true. Also notice with most of the off the shelf stainless canon type mufflers, they drone in your ear when cruising, drive you mad on a long trip.My Dad and I build proper mufflers all the time but im not here to make money so if you can weld I can show you how its done.We also build Active exhaust systems which are legal, but thats another whole story!!Good luck, cheers Matt

Get some mufflers put in, pretty basic concept lol. Loud = need more mufflers. End of story lol.

Hey man, as stated by all the other guys just take the car to your local exhust shop and get them to have a look at it and they'll go from there. My system is simply a cat, straight through resonator and the a custom rear stainless muffler with twin 2 1/2 inch outlets simply because i wanted twin pipes. m

My system is loud but has very minimal drone and have been pulled over many times with no hassles. :)

Ha id thought of bung silencer but 4.5" dumpy it apparently wont work, after many a phone call to many a different place the best answer Ive got is get a/another resonating chamber in there to cancel out zee loud noises escaping. So looking at doing this, only problem now is time which is why i just wanted the temp solution so i can solve it properly further down the track but get my car back and legal to drive now

also as mattie said cannons are a joke, use a decent oval muffler instead. It will stop it both looking and soounding "cheap"...

i got a berklee oval mild steel muffler put on my exhaust system to try and quiet it down and remove the drone - was a cannon and stainless before

i dont think it got very much better at all, cant even tell the difference :(

it drones like mad till about 2500 rpm and sounds great all the way onwards. but i drive like a grandma so its rare im above 2500rpm

my exhaust already had 2 centre mufflers put in when i bought it

im seriously considering putting the stocker back on - my ears are being damaged lol. quite sure its legal though, im just being a wuss about it :)

Ha personally if I may say so my car sounds great and I love it, for short gear drives just changing most of the time, but sitting on the motorway its got a solid drone from around 80km/hr up to 115km/hr which I admit gets rather annoying on long trips. The main problem for me is im looking at upgrading cars come mid next year so i'm trying to avoid spending copius amounts of money on it, and instead keep it sounding nice but staying legal.

On a side note, been trying to get a decibel reading to know for sure and the guy keeps dodging me and making up excuses. not a happy chappy on that one
