SKY031
I'm getting a CB for $23 from the manufacturer that supplies Jaycar. Its a Digitor 50 channel... if you want I can get 2. If it's 50 channels, then its not a 'standard' UHF cb. Standard uhf cb has only 40 channels (48 if you include repeaters) The ones you guys are talking about (which retail so cheaply) are available at that price because they dont cover the standard citizens band. (476.425 - 477.400 meg) In english, this means that if you buy a 'cheap' cb, you will only be able to talk to the other tight asses that wouldnt pay the extra few bucks for a 'real' radio, because you will be in a whole seperate band. [EDIT] further to that, the one that funky posted the image of (from jaycar) is a standard UHF radio. Take into account that UHF is very directional, and 3-5k's is based on line of sight transmissions. If you can get 10 people interested in buying one, then the price drops from $79.95 each to $63.95 each, so its worth looking into. NRB
I can't recommend the GME Eletrophone TX610 enough. It has double the output of the Uniden ones. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/38371-uhf-radio/page/2/#findComment-778785 Share on other sites
funkymonkey
buh i meant 40 channel, not 50... too late at night to think., also noticed I called it a Digitor insteald of a Digitalk Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/38371-uhf-radio/page/2/#findComment-779072 Share on other sites

Snowman
$70 is still a lot less than what I paid for mine! A mate of mine is who is chasing one so it would be good if I could give him the option of the upgraded one as well. NS2500
Forget about those .05W units, they're useless! I "bought" the 1.5W unit from Jaycar for the G.O.R cruise and it was about the minimum you'd want. Also, Jaycar have a 7-day refund policy if you know what I mean. SKY031
Also check that the radios are repeater capable. If the radios dont have a duplex function, then theres a jolly good chance that what you're paying for is (contrary to what the adverts say) "just a toy" Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/38371-uhf-radio/page/2/#findComment-780419 Share on other sites
funkymonkey
both of em state... "Covers Australian 40 UHF CB channels and repeaters" on the first line and according to the dansdata review (which I must say is pretty thorough) "You can get long range from UHF, though, by using repeaters. Repeaters are stationary transceivers set up to receive on one channel and send on another, and UHF CB radios designed for this country - including the Digitalk - automatically use repeater duplex mode when you use a channel designated for that mode." SKY031
aaaaaaaaaahahaha! I'd like to see you try and transmit into a Melbourne repeater on one of those things without standing right under it! funkymonkey
pray tell how many repeaters you expect to encounter on a trip to hanging rock, or how many repeaters I'll have to go through to yell at dox as he tailgates me in his truck, or even how I am to access the repeaters when on most SAU outings we've been using channel 15. From memory repeater output channels are 1 to 8, and 31 to 38 being the input channels. I'm looking for a cost effective solution to the problem at hand. I have a mobile for other worldy communication needs. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/38371-uhf-radio/page/2/#findComment-780579 Share on other sites
