Hi guys,

One morning when i started the car, i heard a rattling noise from the clutch. The noise can be heard only when i release the clutch in the neutral. As soon as i press the clutch peddle there is no noise.

It's kind of a mixture of a rattle and a humming noise. Pls help me with this.

Thanks

Regards

Shane

Yes it is mate.. Once i press the clutch the noise is going away.. It's so annoying.. If it is the throw out bearing you should hear the noise when you press the clutch isn't it..?

When you push your foot lighly on the clutch pedal, only to the point where it starts to put up a resistance, does the noise go away?

How much do you have to press the clutch for it to go away? All the way in or like 1cm?

Worn throw out bearings usually make noise when clutch is depressed, however, in Skylines it is common for throw outs (usually aftermarket like Exedy) to make a "free spinning" noise in their resting position on the input shaft retainer, which goes away with the slightest bit of pressure on the clutch pedal, because this presses it up against the pressure plate.

However, if clutch pedal has to be all the way in for the noise to go away, then it is more likely a gearbox issue (input shaft or input shaft bearing).

best post evar

mine's been doing this for a little while now and i haven't been any to find many posts with any detailed info other than 'throw out bearing' or 'input shaft'

i will be testing this tomorrow, i have a feeling it's the 'free spinning noise' though

if the noise is that free spinning noise, i'm assuming that it's not a bad thing?

They say "input shaft or throw out" because a lot of people (not all) regurgitate answers to problems they've heard previously, without bothering to understand how the drivetrain actually works. There's a logical way for diagnosing these sorts of problems, particularly when you control a few of the variables like gear selection and clutch engagement.

If you have a noisy throw out bearing that makes a slight rattle/hum in it's resting position, this won't cause major harm, but may annoy you at the traffic lights. This noise is common with aftermarket clutches and even more common when clutches have been replaced but the installer has failed to grease the input shaft retainer and clutch fork, ready for the new throwout bearing. One way to quieten things down temporarily, is to pull off the clutch fork boot/cover and spray some lithium grease over the clutch fork where the throw out sits, being careful to avoid spraying the clutch plate itself. I had a noisy throw out and oddly this fixed mine permanently. Some bearings are just noisy and it won't go away no matter what you do.
