here are some pics of a local newcastle engine builder & his latest project.

gtx snails with a few other goodies...take note of the intake plenum & flux capacitor. absolutely awesome fabrication work!

Hey Marko,

did that engine or intake and cylinder head come from VIC?

some very familiar parts on there ? :)

I'm just about to do a cartridge drop of a pair of GTX 2863's into my -5's next week with the modified front -5 housing, I have seen GCG have said it wouldn't work? but I'm pretty sure you can't go backwards than having plain -5's.
I am running this on an RB28 HKS engine, and was even looking at the 2867's, but I'm not very confident I need the extra power, and the response would start to suffer a bit.
My -5's have a slight oil leak developing and this is the reason for the change, but I was worried about the 2" -5 housing as opposed to the 3" one on the complete turbo, do you any of you really see the benefit of changing the whole turbo over when the -5 mods looks very viable, especially with a drop in type approach by comparison?
It looks like status saw some good results from this approach, has anyone else done the -5 rebuild with GTX cartridges?
I seriously this needs to be looked at, because it would be great for people with -5's to upgrade far easier and cheaper than the other way.
Sean's job looks great though, and would be the other way I would do it with a complete GTX item, bar the exhaust housing.

Just got my car back with the GTX2863's in my -5 housings, and it is heaps better, I have 30psi with 638hp at the wheels on E85 now, and the response and power in the mid range picked up heaps.

Cams are now 272/ 9.7's I would probably go back to 260's for a perfect combo, but even the big overlap with this GTX upgrade it feels pretty darn near perfect for response and power. I went to the track yesterday, and the corner exits were pretty much bang on, even with 2nd gear short shifted into 3rd it still had plenty of mid range to keep it pulling really well.
The green graph was the power level I had last time, and now this is the new figures. I unfortunately had coil pack failures on the 3rd lap into my day, and the power level had to be dialed back down. I was trying to break the lap record for fastest street car record in QLD and I only had 2/10's of a second to have it. With the extra 80hp I was sure to have it, and the laps where everything was fine, I was driving pretty carefully whilst monitoring temps etc from my recent head gasket change and turbo upgrades. I am now selling my car and don't know if I will have a chance to try again. The potential for this thing now is truly getting crazy, it has been an amazing car.

    • I vote go red. Only because I hate keeping gloss black clean. Was no worries helping out either! Glad you've survived the rain outs of QLD
    • I would again like too thank Matt for his help in me sourcing the detachable hard top for the little red car, without Matt's assistance in inspecting it and locking it down, I can guarantee it would have sold before I could get up to see it,  and as that was the only available NC hardtop in Australia, I consider myself extremely lucky on multiple levels To say I'm more that happy would be an understatement And, it is 100% water tight, I drove through torrential rain coming back south, and by torrential, they type of rain that doing 40kph in a 110kph zone was a real thing, and even then, the standing water on the Hwy was deep enough to throw waves I'm also more than happy that the huge "BEASTS" that Matt calls dogs didn't eat me for lunch, I'm sure the sniffs and licks were more to "taste test" me, over being to friendly Now to work out what colour to get it painted, panel match, or gloss black........first world problems are real
    • Actually I might have figured out. Looks like there is a tab according to google images but it's hidden. Silly me.
    • No clips on this one like the other connector. Only that red tab that I can push slightly up.
    • For any loom connector that has an obvious release that resists pushing far enough to unclip, just spray some silicone lube into it. You might also benefit from using a bent screwdriver or small pick to push in the right place at the right angle.
