OK boys, i know this is a long running 124 page thread and decided to start a new thread hopefully with more data and facts instead of personal opinions of whats works and what doesn't. Hopefully if we all work together we can work out what roughly is a good oil for our (babies) depending on application. We know the obvious, my car his car different, therefore we need to treat them differently.

So i have gone to the trouble of going through some of the technical data sheets of the oils i was interested in (please note this) and if you are able to get me others i will add them to the table so we can compare the specs. The main point of this thread, is to find a cost effective oil that shows the best value of money. I know some of us can afford to have the best gear, fair enough, but for the lay man, i hope this thread helps.

Please note, lets try to keep this thread under 100 pages lol. Anyone with mechanical, technical or otherwise expertise in this area please feel free to comment and explain to the rest of us how relevant the data compiled in this table is, as like the rest of us I'm using a oil in my 33gtr (Nulon) and it feels ok but at $60.00+ a change i think i can get better but i just dont know what to get. Any advice would be appreciated. I ve saved the table as a word.doc so if anyone whats it to add to it go nuts.

if you read through the 124 pages you would realize that the basic rule of thumb for any RB engine is a common groupIV synthetic somewhere in the 60$ range is what you need. Brand isn't really that important and is more a matter of personal choice...

lately castrol edge and motul 8100 seem to be the favourites, but that may change as new oils are always being produced

Thats really all there is to know..

BTW mobil delvac is diesel oil..then again subarus do kinda sound like tractors maybe thats why they like it :D

Thanks man, but i after all i was reading so much about what people had experienced, i was going to go with the Mobil 0w-40 but then someone said it burns too quick, then i thought i go something else, but then someone said this, catch my drift. i thought providing some data can shrink a massive thread and get us to a medium somewhere as to which oil the population prefers to having running in their RB's and is more consistent. Hey at least i got one reply ta.

Delvac 1 5W-40 is a multi-fleet oil, and is SM/SL compliant. So, perfectly fine to run in our cars. It used to, and may still, have better HTHS than Mobil 1 0W-40.

Dont know about plain Delvac 15W-40, IIRC its not synth, and may not have Sx compliance. If that's the case, avoid it.

Oh, and I havent updated this in a while;

FWIW I'm running Mobil 1 0W-40. No problems.

Thanks man for the heads up re Mobil 1 0w-40, i was leaning that way and at $59.50 (when u purchase the 20l drum) its a bargain that i cant surpass.

PS. I love the table, but like mine i only understand half of what that stuff means. Thats why i started the thread, hopefully someone will come along and say hey this means that and this is why this is better lol. im looking for the easy way out, but yeah reading through 124 pages does your head in.

WRX's i dont mind the sound of an EJ, definitely best four cylinder sound you can get. But an RB with a screamer pipe.........thats something else!!!!!!

yeah i knew it was fine to use delvac but there is definatley better oils to run for the money

I see it alot at trucks supply shops as it is primarily meant to be a diesel oil I belive

Can you supply a supporting argument to that statement? Especially what "better" means.

I see it alot at trucks supply shops as it is primarily meant to be a diesel oil I belive

And what's the implication of that for its use in RB's?

FWIW I ran Delvac 1 5W-40 for a couple of years in my RB26, and in my previous car for a couple of years before that.

and you dont run it anymore because..?

They changed the formulation when it became "ESP" and didnt publish the HTHS. Oh, and I CBF driving to Homebush to get it now that i can get Mobil 1 0W-40 from the ebays for $65.

k so im using torco oil. 20w50 sr1. its apparently awesome stuff, on par with motul and big in the motorbikes. my engine builder swears by it and so does my tuner. torcousa.com. after changing from a run in oil to this i noticed a more stable idle and definately more power.

  • 2 weeks later...

You can buy Mobil Oil cheap from LubesDirect based in Penrith, i buy in 20ltr drums, its better and you have to do it less often. I have just purchased 20ltr of 5w/50 (as advised by my tuner) for $267.00. Not bad I'd say for a synthetic.

Any Mobil Product called Delvac is primarily a Diesel engine oil, but it does have a petrol rating.

When looking at the API specs if the first letter is a "C" (Compression Ignition) its primarily diesel engine oil, if its a "S" (Spark ignition) its primarily a Petrol engine oil

Example

Mobil Delvac MX is a CI-4/SL

Mobil 1 is a SM/CF

The letter after the C or S represents its peformance leval for petrol or diesel

Its not a problem to use a diesel oil in a petrol engine, so long as the "S" rating is the one you are looking for. API "SN" is current.

The new API SN spec is designed to handle the problems of using E85 (85% ethanol) fuels

im using the united 1 5w50 and i find it brilliant its a weekend car i have used it for about 500kms now with no problems great cold starts and great oil pressure on idle when warm etc. i had mobil1 5w30 in mine for 2000kms it was sh*t broke down after about 1000kms. they use it in HSV's which are alloy so maybe good for a N/A engine but turbocharged mst heat it up to much and it tends to break down

i Highly Rate the united oils from kingscorp. and i will from no on be buying it in bulk from him. any questions about the oil feel free to contact me

Im using castrol edge 20w50, Castrol is good stuff I think.

I once used Fully Synthetic castrol edge oil in my old evo 5, it started blowing smoke and using oil so it must of been getting past the piston rings being like water. so had to resort to thicker semi synthetic to fix the issue. (had around 90 ks on clock)

as for my R32, what im using is prob a bit thick because the oil press gets way up there! it has a rebuild and forged engine (a few years ago) so im thinking of trying fully synthetic in it instead.

I guess what im saying is use fully synthetic oils for newer fresher engines and semi synthetic for older used engines. and choose the weights accordingly for how you use your car

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
    • Thanks for sharing this, and BTW if your headlights are in good condition they are worth thousands....you might want to consider replacing them with brand new LED ones like this (https://www.nengun.com/78works/full-led-headlights-r32-skyline) and making enough profit to buy a house in Sydney
    • I'm not sure what sort of shops are nearby, but I'd expect any reasonable exhaust shop could put a cat in it that will not restrict the power that engine makes. Otherwise, if you want to remove it, short lengths that replace the cat are readily available online, search for "de-cat pipes" or "test pipes"
    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all!
