Hi all,

I'm relatively new here, i created an account as i am in the process of buying a GTR and would like to join the skyline community :D

Well looking for the right gtr (that's within my budget) has been quite a difficult task, and it looks likely that i would travel interstate if that right car pops up. Now i have done my research and am aware of all those additional costs that comes with buying an interstate car and registering it in NSW. My main concern is getting the car through an identity safety check (blue slip). I know NSW has perhaps the strictest regulations concerning what cars can get a blue slip, so i done some research - ran around asking a few mechanics and mates about what modifications can/can't be on the car and i had some inconsistent/vague answers which really didn't help my cause. I don't want to run the risk of buying a car which cannot be registered in NSW, so i am asking y'all which modifications are allowed and just how 'standard' does the car have to be in order to get a blue slip?

Help from those that are in the know or has had experience buying a car interstate will be appreciated !

Cheers

They have all this info on the RTA website.

Well naturally that would be the first place to look... I have been on the rta website and it really isn't very helpful. Here is what it says

"Examiners will check the following vehicle components during a safety check:

  • Vehicle identification (AUVIS only)
  • Brakes
  • Steering and suspension
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Body condition
  • Seats and seat belts
  • Lights and headlight aim
  • Engine / drive line
  • Exhaust system
  • Towing attachment
  • LPG system (accredited examiners only)
  • Number plates (obscured, faded, unauthorised)
  • No dangerous protrusions fitted (brackets for spotlight, fishing rod holders etc). "

My concerns are modifications, and how standard the car must be. The info on the rta website is too broad and not specific.

Again, it will be appreciated if someone who has had experience with buying interstate can clear things up for me

As long as u follow the same principals as what wouldn't get u defected in nsw u will be fine.. so no exposed pods, atmo bovs, stuff like that

Thanks, I guess defects can be used as a rule of thumb. Although a lot of stupid crap gets defected nowadays, I'll just adhere to common sense when buying

Hey mate,

Seeing as you're in NSW, I'd get in touch with Japlink Motors at Haberfield (02) 9716 0857 and ask for Todd. Or better yet drop in and have a chat to them. They do a lot of compliancing (and 'blue slips' - now called 'identity checks' - for imports (a lot of Evos and GTRs / Skylines) in Sydney and will be able to advise you on what to look out for.

I've had two GTRs inspected by them.

Good luck with your search :)
