Replacement Turbo - What To Get?

Well the turbo on my R34GT-T has bit the dust and I need to get a replacement fairly quick.

Rather than replace it with a stock turbo I was thinking of something with a little more performance, but Im not sure where what so I would apprecieate some advice. This car is my daily drive and I do a fair bit of open road crusing so I dont want anything that is laggy or peaky or sucks the juice down. So a bit more performance but not at the sake of useability.

Current Specs

- RB25 NEO DET

- eBoost

- FMIC

- PowerFC

- Pod

- Hi flow exhaust

- Spitfire coil packs

What I want

- Bolt on, no messing with makeing custom mounts or anything

- Mild performance improvement (currently 200kw at the wheels)

- Works with current mods, dont want to upgrade other bits like fuel pump, internals

- Dont want it to use a lot more fuel

- Dont run out of puff (old turbo started to loose boost from 4200)

- Daily driver so not peaky or laggy. Smooth with boost over most of the range is good

So guys, fire away with the suggestions!

hypergear, your pretty much either limited to the smallest hi flow he has or a bigger one with less boost as your injectors, afm and fuel pump are going to be at there limit, i maxed my injectors and afm out at 230 rwkw but that was over tuning the afm and hitting 100% duty cycle on the injectors neither of which is recomended.

Put a stock turbo back on there and setup the boost control better.

There is no way the turbo should be falling over from 4200rpm for a start. That's just a poor setup.

And if you don't wanna upgrade fuel pump, AFM, injectors - forget upgrading the turbo. You can't do one, without the others.

Nah no bolt on kando turbos all need external gate and v band dump

That's really not too bad. It would definitely make it competitive pricewise if you're going to keep the standard exhaust manifold.

+1 to what R31Nismoid said.

If you're willing to spend some cash then a lot of doors open.

Open

All in all without including injectors and afm and aftermarket ecu a kando setup will cost just over 1k with the right contacts

Yeah but so what?

You get a turbo that will have all the lag, but no power because you are limited to 220-230rwkw (or so) due to needing ALL the other supporting modifications.

Kando/hi-flow - all will go over 250rwkw with ease. No point having a bigger huffer for no gains.

Cheap or not, its pointless when the OP has clearly stated he doesn't want spend anything more on any supporting mods when a stock turbo is $350.

Also change the turbo = need a retune $$

Yes because a bigger turbo pushes a larger volume of air

If he was to run a bigger turbo but ran the same psi setting as before it shat itself does it still need a re-tune ? Could always get the supporting mods later on.

I wouldant mind another 20 rwkw, as long as the difference between that and a stock item isant silly.

GT2835 Pro S or Hypergear come to mind quickly.

Thanks

Hiflowed stock turbo such as the GCG hiflow are the only true bolt on turbos everything else requires more work to fit. There are no catches or hidden surprises if you bolt your rebuilt turbo back in the same spot.

Never considered hiflowing the existing turbo.

Of course that means I would have to have my current one rebuilt.

Anyone have an idea on what it costs to have a turbo rebuilt and hiflowed?

Also whats the downsides?

Put a stock turbo back on there and setup the boost control better.

Interesting....

Its not falling over as such, just boost drifting off as revs rise. I was told by several sources that is to be expected with a stock turbo when uppped to 1bar. (have attached dyno chart with boost if anyone wants to comment)

And if you don't wanna upgrade fuel pump, AFM, injectors - forget upgrading the turbo. You can't do one, without the others.

Was told by several sources I can upgrade slightly without doing the rest hence asking for advice in this thread.

For my current use I would like some more power, but cant justify a large cost for a big jump.

+1 on highflowing what you got.

Bolt it back on retune it with some more boost maybe expect 230kw atw max id imagine

Who would repair and hiflow a turbo?

Ok, so hiflowing will make it laggy?

I would not call an extra 20 to 30 rwkw no gain (depending on the cost above putting a stock one back on)

While I dont want to get cought up in upgrading everything, I did factor a retune in, I assumed it would be necessary if I put a stock or different turbo back on.

Thanks for all the opinions guys, they are apprecieated.

You were running 15psi through the stock turbo?

No wonder it shat itself... No more than 11-12psi should be run.

And yes, hi-flowing will make it laggier, you are putting in larger wheels.

$350 is for second hand stock turbo.

Realistically to put a decent hi-flow, ball bearing etc, $1600 is the cheapest you'll get. You can get bush bearing ones for around $800 but their performance is not as good and for 220rwkw there is little point in spending $800, then $500+ for the tune only to gain 20rwkw and more lag.

Per my post GCG hiflow stock turbos.

Search SAU and there are numerous threads on hiflowed turbos. The major upside is that they it will bolt straight on but will still require supporting mods to get the best out of them.

There are so many other options out there but each option has differing levels of cost and difficulty.

Best advice I can give is organise a decent budget and do it properly after doing lots of reading here at SAU. If you are going to fiddle around with half measures save your self some pain and just buy a second hand turbo.

Get a basic high flow from Hypergear using the stock housings.

It will mostly bolt back into place with the exception of the oil feed which he will supply you. With what he will send back it WILL bolt back on easy enough.

This will be a rough maximum of 250kw worth of power but an easy 220 with the stock AFM and injectors in place. You will need to remap your ECU if a stock turbo does not go back on.

Expect to pay $960 for the highflow job and $1350 for the tune.

    • Surprisingly the D6000 is only $1999, I'm waiting for the BF/CM sales, and hoping to get one cheaper. D4000 is well priced, still outperforms the 13" SVS PB-3000 and is like 1/2 the price at $1699 RRP. I do watch a fair amount of movies, and listen to EDM, jazz, symphonies, etc. so the lower notes from a subwoofer are always appreciated. The front 8" stage, just doesn't provide you with lively feeling, even though they are pretty bassy for a pair of large bookshelves. Then again, these days it's just playing Wiggles, Blippi and Ms Rachel, another reason the 3m wide cabinet exists, to hide all the audio gear behind it. They used to sit on a nice pair of stands, but as you know, they make good baby traps too.
    • Granted, which is a solid reason why I don't have one. My floorstanders are only -2 dB at 22 Hz.  So they're still working down to <20 Hz. Which is no doubt part of the reason why my receiver shits the bed! That Tonewinner would be about double the cost though, so it's not apples and apples. There aren't many AU$1300 subs (that you can buy prebuilt, I'm ignoring what can be achieved by DIYing) that compete.
    • -6dB at 22Hz isn't that great, watch the data from the D6000 from REW
    • I'll just leave this here. https://www.adelaidespeakers.com/subwoofers.html TL loading, big power. They sound awesome. This is what I would buy if I was going to try to take the bass away from my floorstanders. Just go with the 12".
    • I'll snap up some photos when I'm back home, in the office today meeting my "in the office" quota. Have 2x Teams calls scheduled in, office culture they reckon.   I've never owned a proper off the shelf sub, I've always made or modified broken ones with Jaycar plate amps and/or car subwoofer drivers. The current (and broken) subwoofer has a proper home driver in it, Dayton driver, thos one https://www.daytonaudio.com/product/118/rss265hf-4-10-reference-hf-subwoofer-4-ohm FS of 25Hz, which is low but not low enough. Yeah, I think they were brought out to the market to compete with SVS. I would love a SVS PB-3000 but they're not cheap, especially after their price hike. From reviews online, it does look like the Tonewinner D6000 would destroy and with good amount of money saved too.
