How To Crossfire?

Got a amd hd 5850 and 5870 gfx cards and I have one installed ATM it's got 2 x 6 pins in the back with two 2 pins loose is it I might need a different power supply? It's a 650 watt one

plug them both in put all associated power cables on and add a crossfire bridge cable

Be mindful the 5870 will be "brought down" to the 5850 speed.if you CF them together. It does not "balance".

And overall you'll then loose a little more performance as crossfire is never linear increases/gains as it appears crossfire backs off a bit more with two cards that are not identical.

Got that but I'm trying to work out what needs to be plugged into the othe gfx card because I can't see the same plugs spare that are in the current gfx card

And what pin outs do you have over the 2 cards?

Without know the brand, its hard to tell. Diff brands of the same card can have different pinouts etc.

i would also look @ flashing the bios of the 5850 to a 5870

at the moment i have 2 6x pins into the one gfx card and when i went to install the other gfx i evened it out 1 6x pin and 1 2x pin into one gfx and same with the other, and when i went to turn it on

it was making a constant beeping sound and there was no display

oh dear

what ever power connector you see on any given gfx card means it needs that much power you cant split the difference

no not nessecirily but you need to get more power from your PSU to the 6 pin on the gfx card

you can get molex to 6 pin converters at MSY

ok took my pc to pc diy after work today, and they said my pci express slots are too close to each other so my gfx would over heat. so for now im just going to reformat the computer (fun) and hopefully it will speed it up abit, also got them to over clock it safely

is your 5850 a dual slot gfx card im assuming it is

my pci-x slots are very close that's why a good fan is essential

not sure i took any photo's of my last 4850 x-fire setup

Single slot but the other slot is right next door like 5mm in between

if you get bored today maybe plug them both in the 5850 in pci-e slot #1 and the 5870 below it take a snap for us using Macro (this setting on your camera )
