To the OP, I know you've written not to ask where you bought the L98 from... mind PM'ing me?

EBay - came with the complete engine minus ECU and transmission - loom, power steering pump, all the ancillaries

That is to say i am only missing the ecu and tranny, everything else cam with it

To all the comments regarding custom work etc....

I dont get the reticence to have to actually undertake work on the car. Part of the enjoyment of working on the car is actually solving the problems and turning a plan into reality - or dont you guys get that part..? For anyone that has put the hybrid engine in, it wasn't exactly a straight drop in, and there is plenty of custom work as a result. I didnt mention a limit on funds for the project, nor a requirement to have a drop in solution....

To all the comments regrding stick with the RB engine....

Yes it makes 370RwKW, yes its tough as f**ck, but its done, and im up for something new. I may sell the engine, and all the other parts, or i may just keep hold and see what happens. But the previous engine is done, and now will sit with low Km's on it until it has a new home. And you cannot beat the sound of a V8 !

Anyone concerned about the state of the engine.....

Being stripped and rebuilt, so will have full checks etc before rebuild.

So thanks for the later posts from those people commenting on original ideas for blown/FI on the engine - i think the consensus is that it creates too much power than is usable given the torque already generated.

For those that think its too much hassle - thats fine, stick with your own plans - lets be honest you didnt have to comment/post, and seeing as we wont ever meet, you just wasted 2 minutes of your life posting.

For those with similar projects undertaken/or planned, i may create a project thread so we can have a usefull conversation and record for others interested.

You did find a good deal but not a good swap.

Not if you have a rb25det under the hood.

Cheaper power is not always better.

There was a day when it had an RB25 under the hood.

Now if you check the original post you will see it was a RB26/30 and beleive me, ther wont be anything cheap about this motor, nor was there anything cheap about the last.

Would love to understand why you think its not a good swap........

do it! there is a reason nissan went from the vq30tt to a vk45de in there gt500 car, and in gt1. sounds like arse but goes great. no lag, flat torque curve. and it will do 100k befor any rebuild is needed. t56 box is also tough as nails. abit slow shifting but strong.

also whats the go with engineering these days?

Change to v8 was a regulation requirement

I reckon go for it but make sure you write up a really nice DIY guide at the end so others can follow in your footsteps :D.

No point doing a DIY. Holden change the engines wayyyy too much to keep things neat like that.

I've been finding this the hard way...

Are you handy with a welder and have all the tools to actually fabricate things well?

The last one I did we made custom block mounts and used the RB25 engine mounts.

Custom gearbox mount and modified position on the body.

Relocated steering rack mounts and modified rack.

Modified steering knuckle.

If I did it again I'd quote to remove the clutch master and relocate it then modify the sump so the engine could come 3 inches further back. That creates even more engine mount location drama though. if your paying someone you'll easy add 2k to the cost to do it too

The viability of the conversion really comes down to how much work you can do yourself, properly. Or how much money your willing to pay someone to do it for you.

Tilton three pedal floor mount box will deal with the engine bay dramas.

In the scheme of things, $2-3k to get the fabrication work done properly isn't really a big deal - when you chuck in the cost of everything else:

e.g. teflon fuel lines, new race fuel tank, seat, new comp, engine internals (cam, pistons, valves) new dash.............

the list goes on.

For those interested, the engine is now stripped down and ready for cleaning.

Just doing some research on cam specs, before i buy the rest of the rotating assembly and get it down to the machine shop for balancing.

I've been finding this the hard way...

Picked up the haynes manual for the 6.0 litre so, this points the way regarding torque settings etc. Engine wise, the L98 is pretty simple , although i learnt a few things the hard way when pulling down the dirty 30.

I now have a couple of large plastic crates to keep each section in. and photos.... lots of photos.

This will be amazing. Light weight and V8 sound. Definately move the engine back. Good handling is more important than anything. Power is easy compared to handling.

    • Let's hope that's not a copy pump either. There were so many copies of them back in the day.
    • Damn it, I was at work last night, and stayed in a room there during the storm with the car outside, but undercover, I just went downstairs and well....there was a large steel locker that has come from some place last night, it wasn't anywhere I could see yesterday, and yeap, it landed on the fraking car....of course it did..... LOL So, I'll need to take it back for paint and panel, luckily it was only the boot that took the hit, so it could have been worse Serves me right for staying at work and getting on the cans with some of the boys
    • Yeah, really happy with how it all turned out As for aftermarket lip, nah, I'm not really a fan for practically reasons on a street car that gets driven everywhere  I did have the full lower kit on my 2015 STI, but found the front lip scrapped alot, even at stock 4x4ish ride height As the NC sits now, with the lowest point of the car at 110mm, so just legal, some steep driveways and steep speed humps will still "just" scrap those little plastic OEM air dam thingies on the undertray just before the front wheels
    • Here's one I help build and tuned a decade ago, Garrett  GTX3071R Gen 1, T3 twin scroll 0.83 rear housing. Went from larger 272 cams down to smaller Tomei Poncams to help with the low end. S13 non VCT motor. Car was purpose built for the track, hence low down was the focus. Note the actual dyno chart shows lower boost, however the EBC and boost gauge showed 1.9Bar (Ignore the torque, I was young and didn't know how to set derived torque)
    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
