hey guys im looking at buying a new pod filter as well as the whole intake system mainly because of sound purposes, but along those lines i want one thats durable and not one that just sounds great but fails on me after a month. I've been looking into it and im hearing a lot of different things about which one is the best but i need one suited for me and my circumstances, hopefully the following questions will help me:

1) Currently being on my P's, is it legal to have one just as long as it is enclosed?

2) To prevent hot air from being sucked in, what else might i have to do besides installing a CAI and ensure maximum efficiency?

3) Is it better to have a dry or oil pod filter?

4) Arguably what is the best intake system for an r34 gtt?

Oiled, I run one myself in my GTR for 2 years and no AFM problems. Panel filter that is, I believe there are some things you can do to the airbox, I vagually recall with R33 airboxes you could take off one of the side pieces which Nissan put there to stop induction noise?

The blitz panels are good too Ive heard and half the price of the K&N, although I did run a K&N and never had issues with it :) I'd be running a stock box on the car if its stock. Only reason I am not running the stock box now is because there is no way I can make it line up with this turbo and intake pipe.

yeah its a stock box. I've heard a lot of good things about the Blitz SUS pods but never heard anything about the panels, do they make any noise at all? Or are we to confirm only pods make noise

Makes induction noise a lot louder and sounds good on my R34 GTT. I had it on the standard turbo and it sounded good, now I have it on a 280rwkw setup and it still sounds good and flows well. My tuner Trent said he has seen 400rwkw setups using this intake so it definitely flows well. Bolts straight up too.

Does not matter what filter, you will need a cold air intake to feed air to the pod for best results.

If you change to an air pod, leave your standard air intake feed to channel cool air to the pod.

yes.

Go for a DIY one. Look in the DIY section for CAI boxes. Bunnings perspex...

I run a K&N panel filter in my GTR, I really heard no induction noise until I swapped out my stock turbos for garrett -9s.. now i hear them spool up from 2psi onwards whereas I didn't even really hear the stock turbos make any noise until 7psi.

Why bother with the silicone induction? If you got stock turbo, just sleeve up the original with a metal pipe in the middle. Carbon fiber box will cost you too much. Get one made of a cheaper material, plastic or metal, then have it wrapped in carbon fiber vinyl. Those memory pipes are good but eBay wants too much for them.

Do this:

Apply what WYTSKY has done when you get your customised air box.

Credit goes to WYTSKY for the DIY write up.

I used:

$8- 90 degree intake pipe from a vn commodore in Pick Pay n Go

$4- flexible black funnel from Bunnings

$12- 6 pack hole saw bits up to 100mm from Bunnings (were meant for wood but they were so cheap and I only wanted to use them once)

$3- Rubber edge to cover up the bare hole from Clark Rubber-"Cool Clarky" if you please :P

All up = $27

The whole process only took me about an hour and you only need very basic tools.

Tools required:

Hack saw

Drill

Wire cutters/Tin snips

Maybe a flathead or phillips head to undo a few plastic screws on the underbody

The Steps:

1. Once you have found a Vn Commodore intake pipe, you will notice one side is longer then the other. I ended up cutting it down to about the same, so I could fit the funnel on it and just fit it all into the front bar.

2. Once the pipe can fit in under the front bar (keep testing to find the right size) you need to cut the funnel down to attach it onto the pipe. The funnel is used to attract more air in the direction of the pipe to flow straight to the pod. It probably isn't 100% neccesary, but for $4 who cares?

3. Use the hack saw again, cutting the funnel about halfway through, possibly with a little bias either way. The next step you want to do is measure how much you need to flare the inside of the funnel so it fits snuggly over the pipe. At the moment, the smallest part of the funnel should be able to fit inside the pipe, fit it in and see how much you need to flare the funnel.(It should be about a centimeter)

4. To flare the funnel you will probably need to make about 10 tabs with the hack saw around the smallest end of the funnel, each about 1cm deep. Once the tabs are made, grab a lighter and make the tabs just a tad warm which will make it a little easier to bend the flares with your fingers. The final result should make the small end look like a flower, which will then allow for the pipe to fit in.

To hold the pipe and the funnel together, use an adjustable hose clamp to tighten down the open flares over the pipe.

At this point your piping is now complete, it is optional if you want to use some fly wire to stop any bugs/leaves going up the pipe to your pod, I was not to worried about this because my pod is already a filter so I don't think it matters. You now need to make the hole in your engine bay.

5. Get your pack of hole saw bits, I used a 90mm size which fit very snug. Adjust where you want to place your hole, I decided to make it right in the middle under the pod. Attach the hole saw to your drill and start off very slowly. (From what other people had said I was weary of using hole saw bits that were made for wood, but they were a quater of the price of metal ones and I only planned to use them once.) After you have made the rough outline of where you want your hole start pushing down a little harder, then just keep holding it there, that way the teeth on the hole saw bit wont go blunt as quickly. I did it this way and it took me about 2 minutes before I could simply peal off the perfect circle like a metal can lid, plus I still have plenty use out of the hole

6. Once your hole is made you need to put the rubber edge on, and if you have it handy, spray some fish oil to stop rust(if you don't, don't stress, the rubber edge stays on nice and tight!) To get rubber the right length slowly cut it down in educated guesses, because it slips in deeper to the edge then you think and you end up needing more or have a part where the circle is not complete. I strongly recommend you use this rubber edging because it makes the hole look a lot more professional and hides any imperfections you may have made making the hole. ( in the pics the circle looks a little lop sided because the rubber had not been put on properly yet)

7. The final step to do is adjust the angle of the pipe a little, just so the funnel is pointed right in the center of the hole of the front bar and try to point the 90 degree pipe slightly down so dirt and water can't fly up as easily. I simply used a few hidden cable ties and found a few holes off which to angle them by.

As far as i am aware you are allowed 0 modifications on your p's!

A pod whether in a shitty home made box or no box is still a modification and is easily detectable by ear and illegal.

But what about parts of the block that, when assembled, were twisted into a position that pushed into the void space, which, when disassembled, then released that force and opened back up, thus putting the grout into tension? Would effectively just pull the cast iron off the grout at the interface, leaving a tiny void and benefitting not much at all. Swings, and roundabouts. It's like putting something tiny into the fleshlight and finding out you needed a smaller one, to perhaps follow your area of expertise.

    • I didnt present too many conclusions because I wanted your opinions and feedback based on your own experiences. I don't know the exact material, but it is similar to concrete and therfor only has valuable strength in compression. The forces on the set material once the head is removed would mostly be in compression since the grout wants to retain its shape and the block wants to return to its relaxed state since it's still within the elastic region. The grout would theoretically make the block more rigid. The exact amount would take a better setup on my end. Thought experiment: Instead of aliens, twist your favorite fleshlite. Now fill it with grout and allow it to sit for a week. Now try to twist it again. Observe what you see. Now get your other one and blow into it. Observe what you see. Now put it into a can and fill the space between your fleshlite and the can. After it sets blow into it. Less movement in torsion and less expansion i hope.
