Hi gangs... Just want to vent my frustration, less than 6 months a go i changd my clutch to one of the reputable clutch company that everyone praised about in australia, got it installed from a reputable workshop in the west of melbourne..clutch did not last, slips after 2 months of driving it (not because i trashed it hard), got it returned had to pay for new plates as apprently when it was installed its got oil traces on it and its contaminated.. Fork out few hundred dollars and i told him i just want it fix (as the warranty got declined).. I adviced the shop owner to make sure whoever installing the new clutch again to do not put any trace of oil or lube as per instruction of the clutch compny.. These shop owner warned me these clutch compny and the quality of the clutch they make is a " head ache" .. And that if it slips for the 2nd time, they will not accept that its there fault and he actually offered me not to pay for the 2nd labour but i insisted i will pay anyway providing its not goin to get contaminated.. And he said that there workshop knows how to install these clutch As they have had it installed before with other cars but insisted again that its a "headache clutch".. Now, 3 months later, after babying the clutch, not attempted to even slightest trash on the clutch, and what do u know? Its SLIP badly again.. I just spent a lot on it.. Im soo pissed about it..I felt i got rubbed big time.. by who? I dont know who's at fault, the workshop or the clutch company!!! As much as i want some answers, i dont think i will get that answer as i already know what both side will tel me... Arrrggg... Moving forward, as i need my car every week, im looking once again a new clutch kit and new workshop.. Please anyone help me with reputable workshop close to my area? Im from the west.. And my car is only running -200 rwkw .. Exedy heavy duty button clutch any good for the power i got at the moment? What are the chances of slippage again with exedy clutches? Thank you all in advance..

I have an exedy cushion button clutch in my car it's an rb20 with over 200 rwkw

I have done a few exedy clutches and never had dramas

That's not to say I haven't heard of it happening just never happend to me

But wat setup are u running on what ?

Exedy HDB will suit your power just fine.

I would look into reasons why the clutch is slipping. Has anybody bothered to look at it and determine why?

You must lubricate the spline on any new clutch or warranty will be void. Its tools who put too much on that need to be shot

. Its a street/daily car .. Stock internal and stock turbo otherwise everything else modified.. Thanks for the in put.. Im

Looking to get exedy this time and fingers cross..

I would certainly get it look at next time when installing new clutch .. But what are the things to watch out for installing new clutches to avoid these mishaps from occuring again? I know shop owners should know there stuff.. Its just that these clutch i got and the company owner told me to avoid lubricating his clutch?? He has a big name and his clutch company name is big in australia even here they promote his stuff in SAU..

No leaks at all otherwise it would have been or visibly all over the clutch plates.. Only thing was the clutch compny suggested when it was returned was, it had sources of lubes around the bearings which to him causes to contaminate the clutch!! ..??

One more thing noticebly, during hot weather (yes temperature), clutch just slip badly almost undrivable all over the gears..Cant feel the bites and just slipsss .. But during early morning or cooler weathers, clutch seems to bite nicely??? No issue whatsoever during cool weather.. Is this normal?

It's recommended that the end of the input shaft has a small amont of grease on it when re-installing... I guess someone may have used to much or possibly the wrong type

As it gets hot it may liquify and get on the plates....

So you've got a problem with either the clutch maker or the workshop. I dont really understand how a clutch can be a "head ache" so since that sounds strange to me, first guess is its more likely to be the workshop than the clutch maker. So, I would;

1. Find a new workshop. Ask them if there's anything else they typically do when replacing the clutch. It's common to resurface the flywheel, and replace the rear main seal and spigot bearing when doing the clutch, so if they say they typically do that, its a good sign.

2. Give them the history, then ask them to pull out the current clutch and look for any issues with the installation, or the clutch itself, then call you with what they find.

3. Expect to be buying a new clutch. If you go with what the workshop sell, then you have a one stop shop if there's any problems. Any time you buy a part from one place and have it fitted by another, you risk ending up in the situation you're in now, where they blame each other.

I can't conceieve of any reason that the clutch would behave differently with different weather conditions.

I have a feeling I know who you got the clutch from. I had some slippage with mine, but it was rare. When it got rebuilt he mentioned the surface must have had some oil get on it to cause the slippage. My thoughts with mine was that the high clamp forces involved meant oil contamination was more critical.

Shouldnt have any problems with it if installed correctly, you just use the pink lube they give with the clutch put some on the shaft a good amount but not over doing it and must make sure everything is clean clean clean fly clutch check it over and try to keep hands clean when doing it to minimize chances of contamination. Id be guessing its the workshops sloppy work .

Im also confused by the term headache clutch if I ever heard that it would instantly make me question there knowledge. Chasers is in the west and people seem to be happy with there work maybe try them.

Mate clutches really can be a headache even for the best of workshops if they dont really understand the mechanics of it all. Putting oil/lube or anything else for that matter on the spline is probably the worst thing u can do, just look at were the clutch plates sit!!! On the spline!! So soon as u start ur engine centrifigul force will make whatever you've put there go straight up into plates etc. As Joey suggested you only need lube (i prefer a tiny amount of Anti-sieze) on the bush inside the flywheel. Have the guys/shop made sure your pedal has play/travel and is not pre-engaged? Is the clutch assy pull or push? Does the car shudder when you take off? If it does theyve bent the plates on install (another common cock up). It shouldnt be hard to sort out and my advice is if the shop who fitted it cant figure it out get a refund... Who's clutch is it can i ask? If that info is against site rules please dont state. Cheers

    • Exhaust end of this month, and then tune after that whenever there is availability. Still tossing up between a pure 98 tune or a flex 98/e85 combo.  The (lack of) milage in e85 isnt great. Start to get anxiety if i go for a long drive and there arent any united servo's nearby
    • I mean I can be OCD'y but this is really over the top. At that point why not just run a full wideband fuel controller? Especially if you run 3 widebands. The system works pretty well, which is trimming low load stuff to be within a few percent of the base map. Pre-engine _change_ the base map was only 1-2% off, depending on ambient temp, elevation, etc. Under load the LS is really very straightforward to tune, enough that a wideband closed loop would be overkill. If I really cared (and I hope I don't) I can always just go back to the MAF system the car actually came with. Which does all those nice calculations for me (temp, altitude, etc), now that you can buy 102mm MAF's that do not cause restrictions.

    • I'd be installing 2x widebands and using the NB simulation outputs to the ECU.
    • Nah, it's different across different engines and as the years went on. R32 era RB20, and hence also RB26, the TPS SWITCH is the idle command. The variable resistor is only for the TCU, as you say. On R33 era RB25 and onwards (but probably not RB26, as they still used the same basic ECU from the R32 era), the idle command is a voltage output of close to 0.45V from the variable resistor.
