Hi guys,

I have a potential buyer for my GTR which is located in melb however the buyer is interested in registering it in QLD.

The car isnt very discrete ( rb30, top mount, straight pipe exhaust) so if anyone has an idea on how i can make this as smooth as possible?

The car is currently registered in VIC

Well do they want it registered or legally registered?

Pretty easy to get a dodgy roadworthy in QLD and then you just sign the forms and pay the fees. The smart route is to get everything engineered and modplated, which is quite easy and handy compared to VIC. So long as its mod plated and engineered, cops are happy.

I guess thats up to the buyer, most likely at this stage id just be looking at getting it registered. Maybe down the track hell get it engineered.

Would anyone actually have any phone numbers or details who i can actually call to confirm if they can take on the job?

Ill get onto that then.

However im not 100% if the buyer will want to pay an extra $1-300 just to mod plate it. He might if he gets into trouble but at this stage i think the cheaper the better. i understand dodgy rwc aint cheap but im pretty sure its cheaper then engineering.

if anyone has any contact details id really appreciate a "friendly" RWC guy.

Inbox me if privacy is a concern.

Cheers!

He's spending how much on this car and doesn't want to spring a few bucks for legality... don't let him being a tightarse become your problem.

If it was me, I'd give the guy two choices. Either do it properly or sell it to him unregistered - how he goes about getting it re-registered is his choice.

The buyer is a really good bloke, and basically just wants to know if the cars been modified to the extent that it cannot be registered anymore if the rego is transfered or cancelled. I dont understand the QLD RTA stuff but just dont want him left with a 1500kg tone of metal that cannot be driven anywhere.

From what i understand, regardless of if its de-registered or the exisisting rego is transfered i need a mod plate. They seem to only cost like $200 in qld but there are a few shops in VIC who can do approved QLD mod plates. But they want close to 1-2k.

What im really looking for is a contact someone knows in qld who deals with this stuff and is easy to deal with. Im more then happy to take care of the cost depending how expensive it is. But i understand even after the mod plate i still need a safety cert T_T

In short, Can the vehicle be registered in qld.

The following mods have been done.

R34 GTT

rb26/30

intercooler holes under battery tray

reo bar slightly modified for front bar.

bigger wheels

1000cc injectors,

2x 044 fuel pumps

3.5 straight pipe with muffler, no cats.

screamer

thats all that im aware of that may be a concern. The guy is meeting my quota and is a legit buyer. to many tyre kickers these days id be happy to just make this work and sell it off. I need a van for work =[

Ah right in that case I'd be giving Dan at ERD a call, pretty sure he can do mod plates and roadworthies. He's a top bloke and will be able to tell you exactly where you stand with every mod. Screamer and no cats won't fly though lol.

07 3807 2789 or [email protected] will get you in touch.

Shame you have to sell it, sounds like a weapon :)

Yep transfer from another state is the same as deregistering and registering. You will need both a mod plate and RWC.

Here is the list of QLD Mod Plate codes:

LIGHT VEHICLE MODIFICATION CODES FOR APPROVED PERSONS

CODE MODIFICATION

LA1 Engine Substitution

LA3 Turbocharger and Supercharger Installation

LB1 Transmission Substitution

LD1 Rear Axle Replacement

LD2 Differential Substitution

LG1 Brake System Substitution (Design)

LG2 Brake System Substitution (Modification)

LH1 Convertible and Cabriolet Conversion (Design)

LH2 Convertible and Cabriolet Conversion (Modification)

LH3 Passenger Vehicle Extended Wheelbase Conversion (Design)

LH4 Passenger Vehicle Extended Wheelbase Conversion (Modification)

LH5 Individual and Low Volume Vehicles (Design)

LH6 Individual and Low Volume Vehicles (Modification)

LH7 Panel Van to Utility Conversion

LH8 Roll Bar and Roll Cage Installation

LH9 Street Rod Certification (Concessional Registration)

LH10 Street Rod Certification (Unrestricted Registration)

LK1 Seating Capacity Alteration and Seat Belt Installation

LK2 Seat, Seat Anchorage and Seat Belt Anchorage Certification

LK6 Child Restraint Anchorage Installation

LK7 Motorcycle Seating Capacity Alteration

LM1 Fuel Tank Alteration

LO1 Australian Design Rule (ADR) Compliance

LO2 Pre 1972 Imported Vehicle Safety Compliance

LO3 Personally Imported Vehicle Compliance

LS1 Steering Conversion (Design)

LS2 Steering Conversion (Modification)

LT1 Beaming and Torsional Testing

You are definitely going to need an LA1, possibly LA3 for the 26/30.

Others may be needed depending on other mods you have, and what scheme the car was complied under. If you don't have the compliance papers that will be the biggest headache, the rest you can all get around. If QLD transport decide it hasn't been complied properly and you can't prove otherwise, it will have to be complied again.

Mod plate guys charge what they like, and they all do it differently. Some charge per plate (set price, $300 for example), some charge per code, and others charge a large amount for the first code (say, $100), then not so much for each code after that ($50). In any case, you wouldn't be looking at more than a few hundred bux at most.

Some places will look closely at the car/mods and fail dodgy things, some will look 'less thoroughly'. You will need one in the latter category based on some of the things you've listed (more info below).

Yes, you will also need a road worthy certificate (RWC). These vary in cost too, I think around 100-200 bux (ballpark) and again there are ones who are 'very thorough' and ones who are 'not so thorough'. As a general rule, the more expensive ones will be less thorough ;). Technically, these don't cover modifications but are about making sure the car is road worthy (brakes work, suspension works, not falling apart due to rust, etc.) but they can still fail you for illegal mods if they notice them.

In regards to your mod list:

rb26/30

Will be OK with mod plate.

intercooler holes under battery tray

This is illegal, but if your mod plate and RWC guys don't look to close it won't be a problem for getting rego. If the buyer gets pulled over by the fuzz though and they spot the holes, he will need to convince them that they are factory holes or he'll be in for a very hard to clear defect. FYI, this is considered cutting a 'structural part of the car'. Stupid, I know.

reo bar slightly modified for front bar.

Depends what you've done. If you've cut it, see above, although it should be easy to clear this defect with a stock reo.

If you've just bent it slightly or something, it should be OK.

bigger wheels

OK as long as they fit the rules set out here: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c792a0c9-92b1-43ee-933b-7bdd8b20842f/pdf_modification_motor_vehicles2.pdf

1000cc injectors,

2x 044 fuel pumps

OK as long as the aftermarket ECU controlling them is nice and hidden :)

3.5 straight pipe with muffler, no cats.

No cats is illegal and a MASSIVE fine if caught.

Striaght pipe + Muffler will be OK if it isn't too loud. Suggest putting cat(s) in.

screamer

Illegal. Again, will be possible to get past mod plate and rwc if they don't look to close, risk of defect once registered though.

You can't get mod plates to cover any of these problems, they are just plain not allowed.

In short, if the compliance is all in order you should be able to get it registered, but driving it round will risk defects. One of the joys of owning a modified car in any state.

From past expetience, la1 plate is easy to get, my last one was $120. Just as long as the brakes are equal or bigger then those fitted to a vl commodore.

Wheels - 18" is legal no if or buts about anything bigger

Get your screamer welded in and a cat fitted and your exhaust will be legal provided under 90db.

Personally if something is said about the holes for intercooler , refer to gtr having those holes stock??

That's pretty much your only problems in Qld from my experience.

Qld has emissions regs????. I've never had to worry about that before and I've had non standard turbos on my cars.

Edit. I your aftermarket turbo obvious? Like this >

ce8e80aa.jpg

I never got asked about an emissions test or mod plate.

Edited by lilcrash

Im a little suspecious my self. I dont think this sounds quite right. I will call around a few places up in QLD to re-confirm.

I have a feeling the guy down here in VIC dosnt have much of a clue about QLD regs.

This is mine.

update: after speaking to 3 workshops in qld, they explained that i do not need a mod plate because it is still a nissan "RB" engine. Thoughts?

Edited by Jap_Muscle

I'd say he's working on VIC regs.

QLD Transport CAN and DO emission test you, see a recent thread in this section about it. My XF was also tested once, although I didn't get a defect or fine as it is not a skyline...

However, I've never heard of it having to be done for rego or a mod plate before.

EDIT: You only get away without a mod plate if that particular engine (RB30) was offered as a standard option for the model you are installing it in (R34). It wasn't, so you WILL need a mod plate.

Thanks for that Martin,

Whats the rule around aftermarket turbos? do i need a mod plate for that? The authorised QLD mod plater down here in VIC explained that because it is a aftermarket turbo it needs an emmision test =S

But QLD transport say they dont care =S

The problem at this stage is although QLD says they dont care, The engineer said they wont even look at it until there is a emissions test?

Never heard of a mod plate being needed for an aftermarket turbo, nor is there a code to cover it...

I know they don't like aftermarket ECUs though, due to the fact that it messes with emissions.

Get your engineer to call QLD transport? Or find another engineer?

Unfortunately there are only 3 engineers in VIC that are authorised to do QLD mod plates. The one we are talking about now, Another whos still on holidays till the 20th of feb and the last is about 5 hours east of Victoria.

Ill try to get the engineer to contact QLD transport. Hopefully that will sort it out. Either that or i can convince the seller to get it mod plated in QLD.

Just Get QLD rego, send him to an engineer and get a mod plate. Why all the fuss? Technically you dont need a modplate until you get pinged by a cop anyway.

Your saying if i just pulled up to the pits with my car and just filled out the paperwork, that all will be ok and away i go with QLD rego?

seriously?

    • Don't do it if your gearbox box has already having syncro issues. The short hifter will put a greater load on them. If you must I remember Nismo did a shorter shifter, with the top part being physically shorter and the part that went into the gearbox was the same as stock. In saying that I've had a C's short shifter (I think) in mine for many years, which was given to me as the previous owner was not sympathetic to the gearbox. Thus forwarned I was careful and had to modify my normal changing style. You have to be super accurate with your clutch and shifts
    • Well, after a week of daily driving and having to crawl out between the wheel and the side intrusion bars. I got myself a quick release setup. I went with an NRG short hub and Quick Release with some cute heart cutouts on the pull tabs. Nice and matchy matchy with the rest of the interior accents I have going on.  The only downside is the total stack height even with the short adapter is longer than the old HKB boss kit. Luckily I had some adjustment left on the column so move the wheel away.
    • stock shifter with new bushes, springs and cup will improve it. Gktech do all the bits. The opinion as the years have gone on is the redline is not great in old gearboxes.
    • Hi all   what short shifter do you use on your skykine r34?   my synchronous does have a problem and i was getting huge delay and grinding sound between 2nd and 3rd, did put shockproof red heavy stuff and it is great now/ no issues   would in your view short shifter screw this up?   people seems to suggest/ use cube short shifter and there is standard and premium. Seen review of premium as much better and less play. Thoughts?
    • Yeah, there's a bit of a density and friability difference between pebbles and any of those other things. Silicone will definitely float in oil and so will be mobile enough to move around. Although, again, if it is upstream of the filter it really shouldn't go any further. I would only ever worry about silicone when it is in places downstream of the filter. Upstream of the pickup is a whole 'nother matter. We've all seen what that does. I have seen the most abominable crap settled out in industrial gearboxes, trunnion lube systems and the like, without any sign that any of it has touched anything in the machine. Just chilling in the bottom, waiting for the inevitable operator error that causes the whole machine to need to be dismantled for repairs.
