Hi Guys,

put factory oil pump with first rb26 built. did 500kms for seasoning purpose under 3k rev then dyno with HKS gt2530s made 395rwhp. 2nd day after dyno just did a burn out saw oil pressure drop to zero. pull the motor apart. bearings in pcs oil & pump drive crushed.

got used mint condition crank fitted with tomei crank collar + N1 oil pump + ACl rod & mains. 300kms no tune just punch 6k rev few times was ok. but yesterday around 6.5k rev same thing happen. pull the motor apart no damaged to internals but pump gear crushed into pieces. oil pressure always between 3-4bar with 6Ltrs oil inside.

why this happening to me.

pls help

I'm going to say its most likely because of improper clearance between the drive and the pump gear.

Are you using Brand New N1 oil pumps? They are really really really bad for failing. From what everyone can work out, any pumps that were made after 2005 ish, the quality dropped dramatically on the pumps, maybe a change in design, metal change, change of where they are made etc.

What harmonic balancer are you using?

Was the rotating assembly balanced?

It is b'new pump

then I should go with tomei or jun pump. but im kinda broke

The N1 pump on my motor currently is from 2010.

Sees 8200rpm daily. Limiter launches constantly - you name it I've done it. Add to the fact it's now done around 10,000kms as well without any issues. Track days, even 4WD circle work on skidpans. Everyone down here has seen it, no broken pump.

There are dozens upon dozens of people down in exactly the same boat making 350-400rwkw on N1 pumps on motors built in the last 2 years.

If it were the pumps fault, all these pumps would be shitting them as well, but, they aren't.

There is something else wrong here, the pump is failing basically driving out the driveway. That's not right.

I used an n1 in mine for 8000kms never bashed limiter but revved it to 7k making near 300kw without a collar and looks like brand new. I dont want to pull the motor out for a long time now so i lashed out on a tomei. Make sure the pressure it set too.

Surey even you must realise by now the N1 pump is a hit and miss affair Ash. sure there may be dozens of them going around ok but....and you know the but.

Just one look at n1 pump gears alongside the likes of Jun, Tomei, Nismo and others is enough to tell you it isnt in the same league as those mentioned.

After seeinng first hand results of n1 failures there is no way I would trust my engine to one.

Ash, i'm only relaying what i have taken from this forum in other threads. Seems there are a lot of workshops seeing a high number of failing oil pumps. As well as the end user.

Some people have said they had noticed a high failure rate of the 'new' pumps. And the discussion was going along the lines of there may have been some sort of manufacturing claim.

One of my good friends built an RB30ET for the second time round after starving the bearings of oil. He decided to buy a brand new N1 pump for it, i highly suggested that he did not but he did anyway.

Car lasted several track days, he only revs it to 6,000 odd RPM as he doesn't need to rev it any harder. Crank collar was fitted.

Anyway, he had it idling in his garage and noticed he had lost all oil pressure. Pulling the engine down revealed a failed oil pump. Now from what i can understand, the oil pump destroyed itself while the car was idling.

This is just another N1 pump that has failed. The failure rate is just far far too high.

As FineLine said, surely you'd know they are greatly hit and miss.

To the OP, maybe consider an external oil pump. I just sold my Tomei pump as im going to go with an external wet sump set up as its quite cheap to do and so reliable combined with an accusump.

Not when to this day, there are motors leaving workshops all over the place with them.. still no issues.

And the 3 I have had since 2005 have all been fine, and are still fine.

There are at best, 20 failures (and that's being generous) in the pages here on SAU.

That won't even be 1%. Of those failures it turned out they were being limiter bashed as well in some instances...

There could be anything from the way its tuned, parts fitted, tolerances etc involved.

This guys has basically broken driving out the driveway. Something does not add up.

my forged engine is now 5 years old, and 160,000km old with a N1 pump. opened engine to check how things are going, all is good the gears were fine and went back together and put the old N1 pump back in the car.

i even got this pump second hand from a guy who scared of it failin... seems to be doing fine for me and i pushing it to 7300rpm and 380rwkw for drifting and ran a 10.8 second quarter with it.

there is something else stupid going on with the pumps.

btw i allways lock tight the screws on the back plate every time i open it.

at the end of that day u have wrecked 2 pumps,.. (an N1 and a stock one) in a very short period of time

dunno if thats coincental or not (i say no way) but generally if u have the same part failing all the time u need to find out why its failing other wise its goin to be a constant pain in the arse

u said u had everything balanced... is that with balancer/flywheel/clutch all attached?

also said u have the standard balancer.. is it new? may be time for a brand new one mate

I'm running Reimax gears in my N1 pump with a welded up crank snout machined back to suit the gears and an ATI balancer, works for me.

You haven't dropped the balancer at some point have you OP? it's not even like you were pulling serious revs when they broke.. something more sinister is wrong here..

yes i was scared of it failing :) A mate killed 2 of them in a month, one was 3rd gear limiter. Rebuilt the motor, next one across the finish line of 1/4 mile with 450kw. I didnt like taking those chances.

Guess i could have saved 2500 for the tomei pump i used.

    • I've owned a few scooters over the years, a Vespa PX oil burner was my first scooter, followed by a few others, including a little 50cc BeeWee that I used as a barracks bike, and I've had a blast on all of them, they really are the cheapest for of city/suburb transport around The only issue with scooters in Australia is lots of people look down on them due to their size,  maybe they need a big bike to make up for something else where they are lacking, unlike Europe and Asia where every man an their dog owns one, and now that filtering is legal in NSW, local traffic is never a issue Not to say I haven't owned my share of big cc bikes over the years, but they were for more blasting through the hills or Hwy riding where it needed to sit on Hwy speeds Safety wise, I ride like everyone is always trying to kill me, everyone is running a red, or running stop/give way signs, or generally asleep at the wheel, which most people are duringtheir commute, I also ride really safe, and give myself, and everyone else enough room in case I need to pull some hasty evasive actions, I've done a few rider training days over the years, which has come in handy on more than a few occasions  As for mods, there's nothing really, and yes your right about aftermarket exhaust, all you get is loud and obnoxious noises from them, like every 250-300 cc you hear with a aftermarket muffler, in saying this I did put a rear muffler from a 125 Aprilla on one of my old 125 scooters, it was horrendous and no amount of full face helmet and ear plugs would dampen that noise As for coming from the Harley, and what a overpriced POS that was, I no longer do big rides as my poor old busted joints ache after about 1/2 an hour of riding, long cruises are so much more enjoyable now in a car, so a big bike would be pointless
    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.
    • You need to know I am sorry for this.
    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1
    • Nah. H2S. H2S is "rotten egg gas", which is what is associated with no cat. SO2 is equally nasty, and if you've ever smelt it you'll know all about it. More of a choking, acid in the back of the throat sort of thing. But you can only smell it in a narrow range up to about 1ppm. Above that, it irritates your mucous membranes, but you don't smell it.
