After buying this GTR with new turbos and an inter cooler half full of oil I have replaced the head gasket and cleaned out the inter cooler . I fitted an N1 oil pump but I did not fit a restrictor for the oil channel to the head , would this `as i have read` cause more pressure in the camshaft area and there fore cause oil to pressure past valves and cause light blue/white smoke / or force more oil vapour into balance tube and turbo`s via the pipe work from the camshaft covers ?.

I compression tested engine and all were between 142psi and 162psi . No misfire is pressent !

MMHg ? on boost gauge is 320 on tick over and turbo`s are reconditioned steel new . when warm MMHg is 390 .

Anything over 0.5bar and there is a blue smoke screen from the exhaust , i think there is oil trace still left in induction from where the turbo seals went and the inter-cooler half filled with oil .// this was how i brought the GTR ! .

When driving normally it dose not smoke with all cam pipes connected , when cam to balance tube is blocked then engine smokes when on half throttle and decelerating ( like valve stem oil seals are gone ) there is also a regular ( every 3 seconds ) air pressure escaping noise coming from under the plenum area ( a high pitched puew noise ) happens on constant throttle and tick over . Could it be the Hi-Cas system as the light flickers on and off under 1.2bar , and the car wants to steer right , could be bushes on subframe i suppose .

Is it possible that standing turbos could degrade the seals and they are gone ?

Any ideas or suggestions `to the positive` would be most greatfully excepted , Thanks __________________

Leaky valve stem seal I would think .

Also clean out ur piping and intercooler to be safe either way .

I doubt ur hicas is causing The smoke .

Check all ur vac lines on te plenum side is ur stick gague still working ?

It's common for the hoses to perish

Mate that noise you mention is lack of vacume in pc system, check for blockages.

smoke, you may still have oil residue in fmic.

could even be a bit rich hence the smoke.

cat on way out.

crap au fuel.

any number of things.

Why did you fit an N1 pump? Did pull the engine out just to do the head gasket or idid you do other work? Pity you didn't put a restrictor in the oil feed - a vent for the sump would have been good too. Do you have a catch can fitted? If not might be a good idea. Have you had a good long high speed drive - enough to get it really hot?

Compressions are high but a bit more variation than ideal.

sounds like rings.

turbo seals blow smoke all the time, not just on boost.

did you do the comp test WOT and hot? how long between the 142cyl and 162cyl?

if turbo seals went recently (but replaced) there may still be oil in the muffler.

    • But, do I have to? 😬
    • While doing my tailgate struts I found some rust. Also replaced my bonnet struts. Such a cool satisfaction with that job.
    • So I removed as much as I could from both sides. The shop vac did a great job of clearing 99% of it. I got it all as clean as I could and then absolutely drenched the whole lot in the rust converter. Tonight or tomorrow I'll hammer it again. The cavity must be close to 400mm in length and surprisingly I was able to get it right to the back.  I'll quickly reassemble and then pretend I never saw it. I'll post pics (for me to ignore later) soon.
    • Yea she is a hoot to drive
    • I have always resisted the urge to go silly. 8" wide wheels and street friendly spring rates? Check. (Let's not talk about the steadily increasing spread of spherical joints across my suspension!!) Stock turbo, run at 12 psi? Check. Lasted for~?10 years before it died. Highflow put on rather than seizing the opportunity to go G45. You don't need 300 rwkW, let alone the more massive numbers that seem to be essential these days, to have a car that is already way too powerful and fast for a streeter. ~250rwkW is fine. I've never exceeded 200, although I will sneak up above it if and when I manage to get my finger out and do what needs to be done to use the highflow's capacity. You don't need $10k worth of CF bits glued onto the outside. You don't need razor sharp ankle cutting front splitters. You don't need the car to be 2" off the ground. You don't need flawless paint, mirror finished wheels, brand new indicator lenses, etc etc. All these things just make the car impractical and will cause you pain when they get damaged, which is inevitable for a street car. A few nice additions are good. Good seats are good. A nice stereo is good. A/C is good! (46° on the road yesterday and my A/C is degassed again. Was moderately traumatic driving home!) The main reason I stick with a mildly modified old Skyline is that I have had it for >25 years, the mods are the rolling result of 25 years of things dying and being upgraded opportunistically, coupled with a few "just 'coz" ones. And I hate almost all modern cars. If I was a young buck starting out now.... I wouldn't bother. Cars have a few years left where there is any possibility of interest or fun. Thereafter there will be no such thing allowed or possible. Any time, money and effort spent now on a project would just be a waste.
