In 2002 melanomas and other skin cancers caused 0.12% of deaths in the US. That's number 75 down the most-common-way-to-die list.

Check your family history and your skin with a GP and calculate the risk then decide yourself whether it's worth it :)

Definitely tan with sunscreen on, I always use 30SPF and am well brown. There's nothing cool about being a crab person who turns into a Holstein cow.

Cool story.

do you realise that Australia is not the US?

and that we are in a completely different part of the world?

do you know what the figures are for Australia?

You obviously don't understand the point I was putting across which is quite simple to see.

I'm not going to put in the small effort to explain, as from your above post it looks as though you wouldn't understand even if I spelled it out.

I still don't see your point.

You're obviously asking the 'safest way to tan' because the only unsafe thing about tanning is the fact that you might one day die from cancers caused by it, otherwise you wouldn't care. If you were worried about burning only then the answer is sunblock and you wouldn't bother asking the question.

Relating to the Aus stats:

1.3% of deaths are due to skin cancer. The deaths that were ranked were about 67% of total deaths that year, this means that by the time you get to the last 33% they are each 1.3% or less of the total deaths. The percentage is so small that asking a forum how to be safe about this would make an insignificant difference. Hence I said check your family history and get your skin checked as it's more likely your skin type that will be the important factor, not the way you actually tan.

What? You're saying burning your skin is not unhealthy, even with cancer taken out of the equation? You might as well say sticking your hand in boiling water is safe because if you pull it out quick enough it won't do permanent damage. I was definitely not only refering to cancer. The answer is not sunblock either, because one of my questions was would sunblock prevent me from tanning.

IMO the number of deaths is irrelevant. You could just fry day in day out and get your skin throughly checked by a GP every few months and properly be safer than your average joe. Just because the cancer doesn't kill doesn't mean prevention is cheap or treatment pleasant. I'm sure a lot of those people who died of other causes had skin cancer at some point in their life or was suffering from it but died via other means before the cancer could get them.

You guys should try a living in northern Japan where you put away the shorts and t-shirts around mid ~ late Oct and they dont come out of mothballs until June.

Then your covered with snow from late Nov to May.

You guys have never seen white !!

I felt like a vampire hiding from the sun over Xmas and New Year period here in Oz.

hope your a skier or a boarder mate!!!

I'd be skiing every weekend!!

Don't try my method which I unintentionally used today:

Fall asleep on towel at the beach while it's somewhat overcast and shitty. Wake up like 45 minutes later with the sun out, absolutely SCORCHING. Apparently it had been out for a while too.

Am now a lobster.

Go see your doctor. They can write you a script for a prescription drug that increases your bodies production of melanin. It makes you very photsensitive so you have to be careful the first few days that you are out in the sun and wear plenty of sun block. It can help you build up a decent tan which by itself helps build up a better tolerance for exposure to the sun.

One of my old clients use to make the drug and they are now in partnership for research into better melanin releasing products. From memory when chatting to the gusy in the lab at lunch things like tyrosine and Gingko biloba mcan boost melanin production

lol... that sucks.

Last 2 days, pool side with me as white as a sheet body wise from the last few months of night shift... Come out nicely brown. Arms even darker now!

1st day 15mins shirt off, nothing else. Then SPF30+ and about an hour without a shirt in/out of the pool.

Today 20mins shirt off (was 10.30am). Then SPF30+ and another 30mins or so.

Obvious tan lines are obvious. My Irish skin is not so Irish and not red at all.

Also don't make the mistake of thinking you're 100% sweet if there's no visible sun. Overcast = still UV rays, still burn and still cancer lol.

Basically, you're f**ked regardless...wear sunscreen. The tan will still come with it, just more healthily.

I left my arm hanging out the side of a convertible a few weeks ago...the thing turned red as f*** and after the sunburn subsided, you might be mistaken for thinking my arm belonged to Basti, but the "cool tan" lasted for about 4 days before two layers of skin peeled off and let through some VERY tender white skin underneath, which was whiter than the rest of my body lol. So fail in the end.

I am 23 and have had 3 suspicious moles removed because of the sun... I don't burn, I have once and that was when I was on antibiotics that increased chance of burning, I have a light tan but not intense... Seriously my boyfriend is as WHITE as white gets and I am fine with him not being tanned because at least I know he is looking after him self... Safe way to tan, there isn't one, I had a friend who was 17 pass away from skin cancer and that was from spending too much time in the sun without sunscreen or forgetting to re-apply it... If you are going to try to tan, wear sunscreen at least it reduces your risk...

Meh, some people lose their skin in house fires or to hordes of rampaging zombies, I think it selfish not to enjoy our intact and perfectly healthy skin to it's full extent - tan away!

    • So, when are you trying the new GR86 or BRZ?
    • Uncle Duncan Yeap, FI Interchiller  Works well, normal IAT's cruising with the WTA only went from 50°c+ to 25-30°c with the interchiller  Before, when on it hard, the IAT would see 80-90°c, now, the highest has been was around 38°c IIRC IAT is measured under the blower hat I recommend it for the street or strip where your only on it hard for 10 or so seconds, but it wouldn't be efficient for sustained track use as it would heat soak from the AC turning off or whatever it does during WOT to protect the compressor It really needs the AC running for it to not heat soak and keep the WTA coolant chilled My WTA coolant temps when just cruising is around 2°c
    • Hey Mark...sorry to interrupt your career change to hair dressing... but...did you ever fit the interchiller to the commodore, and if so how was it? And, who made it?
    • I've been pondering this, I really enjoy the convertible thing, for me, it's like riding a motorbike, without all the issue of riding a motorbike, mainly, my old sore arthritic joints getting beaten up, and, being able to do it in shorts and a T-shirt and not needing a helmet and all the other gear required, especially like wearing jackets and pants in the summer, or needing 6 layers of cloths in the winter, or not having wet weather gear handy when your 100km away from home on the bike when it decides to start raining As for the hard top and its Coupe look, whilst I do lose all that open top feeling that I really enjoy, from my experience with the NB with a detachable hard top, the cabin is a much nicer place to be, the difference in noise for one, a hard top quietens down the interior, alot, with the soft top up or down it's pretty noisy, which, after 5 or so hours, can get tiring But, as you stated, the detachable hard top totally changes the look of the car, in a really good way, and for me, the look of a detachable hard top is so much better than the PRHT which looks more like a after thought with its weird bulbous rear roof line For me, the minimal effort of putting in on, or storing it after removing it, is well worth the time and effort for the look alone And yes, I'm sure the next owner will be grateful for it as well.......
