Hay all.... Couldn't really think of a section to put this in, so i thought id go local....

i recently obtained a set of LED underbody lights, (multicolour, flash patterns, bass sensitive) and fitted them, however, am a bit nervous to turn them on while driving around in case i get booked or worse stickered. Since laws vary state to state, i thought here would be a good place to check a) whether anybody else has a set of lights like this, and b)if anyone knows the actual legalitys of driving with them on.

it's ok, i've braced myself for the ricey/bling commments, but they do look cool...

cheers guys,

phil

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I got busted on Friday night in Freo with the neons on. Even though I paid particular attention to fit them right the cops said they could see the elements breifly when I went down a fairly steep road so I got done. They also said that they have been told to yellow sticker every car with neons on whilst driving as they are deemed to be a distraction to other drivers (What THE !!!!) . I'm going to buy a copy of the Road Regulations Act to verify if their right or wrong but I spose stiff Shite as I've now got a yellow sticker to remove.

thats screwed up!

how bout cops learn the rules and stick to them! i know there was a meeting a while back with cops and modified car owners in which cops stated that if you cant see the tube then its not illegal to drive with them on!

but yes if they are flashing neons i doubt that would b allowed as i can see how that would distract

I unintentionly left my neons on going past an accident 12 months ago, so the copper directing traffic pulled me over. The cop got down on his knees and crawled around the car! I was told to lift the rear tube a bit higher as he could easily see it and sent me on my way.

That was in Bunbury and i dont use them regulary, unlike many commodore drivers around here (And they say i've got rice)!!!

Your right, I read the minutes from the Rollaboyz meeting where the Dept of Transport stated that neons were a go'er providing that the actual elements were not visible. The cop on Frid' night said the only place you could use them was in a carpark and you had to be stationary. The issues we have are that there is no consistency with cops, vehicle regs for mods and yellow stickers. Basically if they don't like what they see they can slam you with a sticker for what ever lame excuse they want and your the poor *** that's got to get it off.

Russ,

if you're referring to the meeting that Rollas organised last year it was with the guys from welshpool pits and not the police.

having neons is like having a huge bodykit, T-wing or a giant sticker that says "I bash women" or "cops might fly, but I fly faster" or something equally socially taboo. it might not be illegal, but the laws are structured so that police have the benefit of the doubt. they are not required to know anything about cars - or, really, the law.

If they have an incling that something is untoward they can yellow you.

so having an attention grabbing car is a double edged sword.

Well Lordy Ma Kettle, run to the hills, lets all drive style bland Toyota Camrys (joke). You're right, but it's about personal freedom that's within the confines of the law and according to an inspector I've just spoken too about the neons he has given me another interpretation of what's the law on them. But yet again the poor old driver who dares to different and drive a modded car is subject to system bashing him down until he gives in and conforms with the masses.

Yahhda, Yahhda. :):(

cops WILL sticker you for anything, legal or not, a guy at the pits told me that, he said the cops are going against anything they say with regards to mods etc etc.. neons are no exception, i had the piece of paper from the pits which said they are allowed but the cop said he didnt care and stickered me anyway, went to the pits and the sticker got removed, no cost or inspection, and the police involved got spoken to by the dept. transport to try to re-enforce that they are legal.

turn them on but just be prepared to be hassled by anti-ricers and police :):D:)

where do you fit the neon? how much to fit?

Its kinda tricky to mount them on a Skyline (32 at least) coz it's largely flat-bottomed, but i ran mine down the 'rails' on the floor of the car, inside the bottom lip of the front bar, and tucked the back one inside the rear body work. Its a bit easier with the LED kit coz they are nowhere near as fragile as the neon equivalent. I fitted them myself, so they are just how i wanted them, and i could make sure all the holes were properly rust proofed etc. the actual lights themselves, including the controller, cables, etc etc, was around 800-1000. See Bruce at Fibrevision, he got me a good deal

800+ was retail... mates rates.. little bit more affordable... but yeah, still pricey...

they are 8 different colours but, so if you paid 350 for cheapies, then times 8, and they're about 2-3 times brighter than the neon type, so yeah, i thought they were worth paying for.

bodykit's already ordered... just waitng on the container now... this was just to fill in some time til it gets here.

*Sorry Old Thread*

Hey, I've been looking around the web trying to find what neons are legal all i can say is everyone says diffrent like you can't have green, red, or blue neons.. i think it will be more wiser to call the cops up and ask.. least then you know what you can and can't have.

i also hate to be the bearer of bad news but i got 4 LED underbody neons with a control unit as well as a remote on my keys to control them for less than $300 and that's a set that can be played to strobe with the music etc.

people look and think it's cool (i had this two cars ago in a Honda, kinda gay) but yeah you'll get so much shit you'll want to throw them in the bin... if it was me i would have used the money on some engine mods or an extremely decent DVD or Navigation double din... but that's just me

all the best figuring out what to do

i thought you could have them on as long as you can't see the tubes themselves

    • January or Feb is it booked in for turbo fitment?
    • The MX5 has had some annoying rattles in both front doors over bumps So I installed fancy pants door bushings, which stopped all of the rattles with the windows up, but........with the windows down there was still rattles, so after some googling,  and a chat with MX5 Mania, I got some new door to glass weather seals, all the rattles, windows up, or down, are gone now Shout out to MX5 Mania, the weather seals were on sale, and when I head to Dural to pick the up they even fitted them for me for free I did see a "really" nice Blue NA sitting out front   and this Black NC PRHT that looked like it has sat in the sun for its whole life and never had a wash, the clear coat was non-existent, an it looked horrible, really horrible, but, it had a nice turbo kit with over 200kw, the thing went like a cut snake, bagging the rears through the gears and dosing like a champ 😍 But, as I've always stated, I am keeping my NC na, I'm happy with the current power the car makes In other news: MX5 Mania do a drive in drive out turbo kit, the only minor additional part recommended for boosting my car, as it sits now, is a oil cooler, and that bonnet vents are definitely required for track use Aftermarket version look a bit to "racecar" spec I wonder how Focus RS bonnet vents would look?????
    • Paint is only structural when applied to the outside of Chinese and Indian cars. Otherwise it should never be present between mechanical joints that were intended to be metal to metal. Pain slips, slides, cracks, compresses, and add thickness that wasn't intended to be there. It comes firmly under the category of "just no".
    • appreciated it thanks   There are threads on the adaptor. I rear re anodising but didn’t know it will reduce strength   re mating services needing to be flat/ not painted, why would that be?
