problem with the rb30 pumps is that they are not used to the rpm that the 20/25's make. remember the rb30 revs to loke 5.5k. my old 25 had a limiter of 8.5k.

the shaft the connects the fan to the bearings is smaller on the rb30 compared to the rb20/25 etc. thats cause that shaft brakes and sends your fan into your radiator and screws the lot. and yes that 1 bolt hole. other than that the price is heaps diff.

its your choice do you take your chance or not??

hmmm re the above quote, i dont think they really factory in RPM to the water muchs quite as much as you say....i mean i could be wrong but i dont think they choos the bearings for a water pump based on rpm...they might but i doubt it.

anyway my rb30 pump has not looked back one iota from day one...

you know what, if i did the water pump again i would buy a genuine one, but looking back, my protex one had not missed a beat or leaked one mL of water/coolant

I got my 100k service down. GO GENUINE PUMP. I brought a "powermax" one and after a couple of days of driving it blew the seal on the water pump. This was months ago and im still trying to get my money back from "Powermax".

Genuine Nissan is working fine. Dont waste your money on the dodgy "powermax" ones, which will just end up costing u more money in the long run.

Just changed mine yesterday, in Malaysia they sell the Paraut brand only as replacement water pumps for the RB engines. It fits the RB20/25 since it has the 1 elongated hole to match both. This is my 2nd unit as the 1st one lasted more than 3 years with 100k mileage of city and frequent weekend blast.

Hope the link will give you guys an alternative unit to buy. Btw Im driving a modded R34GTT

Dude too true mate, needed a w/p asap last week so i rang local parts shop got powermax RB water pump, then had so many dramas finding dodgie stuff, dodge top hose out let, broken radiator ect finaly got it back on rd only to have this cheap branded pump drop a seal in my drive way tonight, doesnt even hold water at all now, do it all over AGIAN.

All i can say is, dont trust after market crap, GENUINE only...

More old threads relavent to my questions.

I am ready to have my water pump replaced on a 25DET S2. I was 99% sure that 32 GTR pump was used when it was last done but after phoning around, some respectable places are saying it won't fit. The car is used for the odd short drive to keep going, some club events/cruises and some track days, probably 2-3 per year at ts stage. Would the 25det pump be the way to go? Its about $50 more expensive than the 32 GTR part I already had. I will be buying genuine Nissan parts.

Thanks for any help.

Since someone has already dug up this thread, may as well post in here.

Is it necessary to replace the water pump with the timing belt at a major service?

Gonna replace my timing belt soon and noticed there are a few "major service" kits out there with a timing belt and water pump.

So how often should you change the water pump?

Or do you just wait for it to go?

Like I said, you have to take the timing belt off to replace it. It's not exactly a fun job.

Like piggas said they don't cost much, so why wouldn't you do it at the same time as the belt?

It doesn't take long correct, but why stuff around and do it all twice when you could just do it all at the same time. A water pump is cheap. It's not like they are hundreds of dollars.

Yes, just do it, then you shouldnt have to worry about anything for another 100,000km, which isnt exactly going to come around quickly. Do the belt, idlers, water pump, seals.

I think people forget that the N1 water pump is designed for more track use. If your car is an everyday driver, or spends alot of time driving around the street, then get the pump that came with your car. Go genuine.

I was given an RB30 pump (at least I'm pretty sure thats what it was) by mistake for my 25, and it didnt fit, because of the slotted hole

In my first car (R31) I made the mistake of buying a replacement water pump from a wrecker... it leaked just as much as the one that I intended to replace it with... doing a timing belt / water pump twice in the same weekend is not my idea of a good time! The only good thing that I can take from that experience is that when it was time to do the timing belt on my R33 I had learnt my lesson and did it all at the same time with genuine parts (as well as being able to pull it all apart and put it back together fairly efficiently!)

What I didn't learn was how to tension the timing belt correctly, so I'll be doing the whole thing again anyway

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
    • 49719 is the cooler loop. Right at the front, LHS of that diagram. Return line from rack (LP side) goes to cooler loop on RHS front of car, then back under engine and returns to bottom of tank. 49717M is feed from tank to pump. HP line out of pump is thick rubber, followed by the hard line that runs down to crossmember and runs in parallel (but opposite flow direction) to the LP return line. Nothing goes anywhere near the firewall or interior of car. The closest they get to that is the connections on the rack.
    • Thanks, plan is to drain all fluid tomorrow and do smoke test to find out the leak.   Appreciate your help and want to understand how the system work. So cooling is achieved by the long loop not any rad? The diagram seems to suggest it connects to somewhere inside the cabin and I thought that is a cooler inside firewall. If you look at the diagram it seems to show it connects to something inside firewall. I tried chasing it but not easy unless I take loads off   i am confident pump is good as fluid goes in and it gets soft( steering) but as soon as I turn engine off , loads of bubble come to surface and overflow. When engine is on , fluid level is below minimum but when off it shoots off and thinking it is sucking air in. I suspect aluminium pipe may have a crack line or whole   smoke test with no fluid should be a good start and if needed will remove the pump   In addition, the one going under the engine bay is high pressure line and one directly connecting from pump to resorvoir is return/ low pressure?   finally I searched and suggestion is to use dexron 2 but that is discontinued so bought dexron 3 as all research suggest it is compatible and shouldn’t cause any issues/ blow seals. I bought two liter of dexron 3 motul atf
