What would happen if EVERY car club got together to get some kind of fair "treaty"?...

the more they get away with, the less car culture there is... it's ridiculous and it's getting worse.

It is funny how the government is quick and happy to sell you the aftermarket parts and tax you on them and than turn around and give you fines once the parts are on your vehicle. All they need to cover their behinds is give this mods name such as off road use only. If the government expects the aftermarket industry to solely relied on few track cars to support their multi-million dollar industry, they have another thing coming. It will disappear overnight and thousands of people who depend on it to make a living are going to be on the street and in the centerlinks ques.

Government wants to have the pie and eat it too. Not going to work any more with the amount of bigot police force out there ramping up revenue for the redhead witch.:yucky:

:spank:

:whistling:

so a custom exhaust = unrestrictive but quiet ? how much are we looking at roughly im down !

Given it's going the way of Victoria...

90dB @ 5100rpm for a RB26.

Managed to get a 3.5" exhaust down to 91dB here with a lot of stuffing around.

But ye a stock GTR with front pipe & stock cat back - fails... It's very shit.

And wait till the EPA start measuring "back off" noise. You might pull 89dB @ 5100rpm - and the back off and the RB26 standard "burble" as idle settles will set the meter off to 91dB. Had that happen as well.

Realistically I cannot see how you'd get a 4" exhaust legal. A 3.5" is border line and requires a baffle plate.

HOWEVER as they are so quiet, you kinda don't get the attention initially that sets the whole process in motion.

I'm looking at a bulk buy for 4" exhausts, not sure if it's viable or not yet.

well I guess how much you need to spend on your exhaust depends on how desperately you want to drive down to the shops with a 400kw dyno graph on the dashboard. Everyone modifying their cars, especially that seriously, has made a deliberate decision to spend a heap of money on it. Not surprisingly the RTA and cops want you to do it legally as well.

The big problem is that people with engineered mods still get defected.....

And while I don't agree with that either, I understand why. A copy at the side of the road has no idea whether the mods listed on the certificate are the same as is on the car at a given time, so they make you get it inspected by someone who can check.

You need to be old,tee hee they never look. :teehee:

Or, old AND driving a stagea.

What would happen if EVERY car club got together to get some kind of fair "treaty"?... the more they get away with, the less car culture there is... it's ridiculous and it's getting worse.

Let's not forget that there was a law allowing motorbike clubs to be banned until those clubs took it all the way to the high court. Let's not kid ourselves that car clubs have more power (or money) than the bike clubs.

I guess I'm saying.....lets all face facts, modified cars are not a vote winner, quite the opposite. We will all continue to be targetted no matter how many angry people post in this thread. There are people whose every day job is to think of every possible way to make it hard on us (eg Ash's "suspicion" notices above, or the hotline to report a noisey car).

Keep your mods mild, quiet and low key. Don't drive like an idiot in public, and do your hooning at a track - that is the best way to slow down and minimise the noise and pushback on our community. That's exactly what SAU NSW pushes, with good reason.

I'm not angry, just disappointed with peoples attitudes towards genuine enthusiasts.

Yes, I own a gtr.

I used to own a Mazda 121, and I hooned around in that, not the skyline.

I was also disappointed to see no one who looked over 30 get pulled up and defected.

But, its just this years version.

They seem to run the same special every year.

Soooo, see you all in another thread next year.

I'm old and drive a Stagea. no problems but seriously I agree with Duncans last post, keep it subtle and dont be a dick. As much as everybody in this thread does the rigth thing, there are people out there with very different attitudes, I don't want to share the road with them either.

I just do my bit to show that owning an imported car with mods does not make me a dangerous hoon, if I change the opinion of few people, all good.

And yeah, see you all next year in another thread with the same theme.

90dB @ 5100rpm for a RB26.

I wonder what would happen if when the car was tested that it wouldnt rev over 2500.

It wouldn't be too complicated to put a fuel cut relay on the injectors power rail that is triggered by an input of 0 road speed, and and RPM activated switch.

Two of these, one monitoring engine RPM and the other wired into the road speed signal. Link in the clutch switch and the car will drive like a normal car still, but it won't let the engine free rev above the pre-set RPM. Unless the car is run up on a dyno or it was being free revved with the clutch in, it couldn't be tested above 2500 rpm. So it would pass.

It would work with factory management too.

Duncan and others are right about these operations happening all the time > Give a new name "Operation y" > New Dog; Same Fleas

Lots of police down south yesterday ; only 2x today over 250kms of driving. Expect lots on Sunday after 'high noon'. If you must travel and for instance you have exposed pods or loud exhaust, & you're in a group of cars, stay in the middle 'o the pack.

Wouldn't the cops/EPA/whoever then pull out some rule that because it doesn't rev over 'x', that itself is a defect?

You could argue that its not defective to drive a car that doesn't rev, just as its not illegal to drive a car thats running on 5 of its 6 cylinders.

To my understanding, they can test the car as is but not alter its tune or anything mechanically to make it fail a test.

You could also say that at 2500 rpm in 6th gear the car is doing 20km/h above the national speed limit.

(Perhaps the car detects guys with blue shirts and high visibility jackets, and prevents the driver from doing anything illegal.)

It seems only fair that if they test a car in a manner that would cause it to fail, that we should develop methods of cheating in that test. They claim they are measuring noise where peak engine torque is developed, but seriously who drives their car everywhere at 5100 rpm? The test itself isn't fair for cars with RB's. If I had to guess the average RPM that my car is driven at, it would be about 2000 rpm.

Active exhausts that open up valves based on boost pressure are also definatly worth implementing. So long as it can't be altered while the car is stationary (and being tested), who's to say its illegal. All lamborghini's have them from factory, so why not put it on the car too.

I have heard of brand new SS commodores failing emissions tests for noise straight out of the showroom.

I was also disappointed to see no one who looked over 30 get pulled up and defected.

If they were to put an older bloke in a SS with an exhaust it wouldn't make for a good story would it? Instead they show the 'typical' guys that seem to get portrayed in everyone of these 'hoon' stories.

Did anyone notice where they were? La Perouse, which is no surprise really. Brighton, La Perouse, Bondi, George Street/Rocks. Belting through the National Park or Old Pac on a Saturday arvo we all know is asking for it. We all know the area's to stay away from.

Ian - If they cannot test it @ the required RPM then it simply does not pass the test.

- 30 days after your EPA notice is served, your rego is suspended.

- 3 months after notice, you rego is cancelled.

Totally agree with what you are saying though.

If people were smart - install a kill switch. Car dies going half way there due to 'electrical' gremlims, call a mate and get a tow home. Would be cheaper than the $600 in EPA fines.

However in that event they would almost certainly serve you a notice to present it for inspection once fixed. At least then, you have the time to get it correct it before you take a wad of fines up the clacker ;)

Problem is if it isn't factory - then valved exhausts are illegal as well. At least down here - so one can expect it to be in NSW, and the video is evidence of this :(

It's really stupid that many models of cars these days have them FACTORY and can be controlled MANUALLY.

Yet to do the same, to pass the same laws, if you or I did it to our cars... It's suddenly illegal.

>_<

It really just needs someone with the staying power (and money) to follow it through the courts and win. Set a precedent and then everyone else launches back at them. It really doesn't make sense a Ferrari can pass ADR with a valve, yet a Skyline cannot. The core EPA laws are from 1992, so very dated.

Also farked that Police can report you to the EPA without even MEASURING your car. They just have to report you based upon suspicion you 'might' be over, rather than actual fact. People down here have been reported when their car has been PARKED and not even running (as the notice tell you the time it was noted).

Really feel sorry for your NSW boys overall... The EPA are a bunch of over powered kents.

It is beyond a joke. If our cars are unsafe, defect them. Don't just defect for the f**king sake of it. In that video I saw nothing wrong with any of the cars EXCEPT for that Golf with the measuring tape holding the door shut.

Those old Ford GT's are a rare, restoration job. These guys don't appreciate anything. Anal dogs. I really don't think it will make much of a difference if a Ford GT rammed into a pedestrian with the air vent on it. If you got hit by one of those, its going to feel like a tank regardless.

Does anyone know the flow difference between a 3.5" Nismo exhaust and a 3.5" HKS exhaust?

Funny thing is a Varex type valve is factory on Ferrari's for example.

They have quiet mode and noisy mode...

Yet they get away with it...

It's farken bullsh*t.

You are 100% correct.

My 328 GTS is old school so naturally doesn't have a Varex type system but does have a 100% factory exhaust with cat and is about 101db....... Tested on my mechanics machine

I got pulled over at a roadside RBT on Boxing day 2010 and the police woman said it sounds noisy.

I told her is was 100% stock and she said. "Yeah....... Wouldn't know anyway with these cars!"

Blew 0% and drive off with a bit of a bark........

Bob.

Get high end or rare cars and they will leave you alone. The Gallardo gets 115-120dB with stock exhaust when the valves open up after about 3500-4000rpm out of it's 10 000rpm range (according to google), Same as the Mercie. Clearly you can see they grab heaps of police attention especially as they are both running capristo exhausts (much much louder), they always say "sounds a bit loud?" I just smile  Never been to pits for these cars but many a "RBT".

Many cars are louder than the rules say they should be even from stock. I can't see why one completely stock car is exempt yet a stock R33 or R34 is stil louder than the rules say and they get prosecuted????

Is it because the high end cars have exhaust valves that only open up at higher RPM (hardly call 3500-4000rpm a high rpm), besides in the G and in most other valve exhausts you simply block a vaccume line and the valves stay open, really takes less than a minute to do...

I agree they should be taking unsafe cars off the road, but defecting stock cars simply because they don't meet nazi style strict unrealistic regulations is a joke. I had a Kia Rio back in the days and I believe it was louder than 90db completely stock, and those older Ford KA's and smart cars are bloody loud for a tiny stock car as well and I don't think anyone bothers them...

To be fair though the people in the video are massive jerks, i'd take them off the road as well untill they grow a new attitude, going on about how "cops get their heads kicked in" etc... too bad the broarder population thinks that everyone in a 2 door sport car is a hoon and a stereotype that ACA reports... :domokun:

I'm so not looking forward to comming back to Australian roads, couple weeks ago I was doing around 112kph in a 100zone, copper doing radar on my car didn't even flintch as they genuinely look for dangerous drivers purposely driving too fast for the conditions. I still love how Australia and the UK have one of the highest road death tolls for a developed western country, and they are also the most strict.... Clearly The Aus/British way doesn't help save lives, at least the traesury gets rich...:rofl2:

thats right I forgot your old man has those cars you drive :P

question to some people in this thread...

you have an a/m ECU...

you see you are about to be pulled up, you set rev limit to 2k RPM on powerFC or insert other ECU here.

coukd you "argue" it by saying, car is running not good, wont rev?

however Im not one to lie, Im an honest bloke, I suck at poker so I wouldnt be able to have a poker face at this "pits" etc

mind you, while my MX5 is engineered for all mods, I still wouldnt drive it in these hot spots for crusing.

I feel sorry for the blokes with the XY/XW's as restoring them is a 50k plus job and most I have spoken to via work have not done a half assed job. not sayinh import owners do a half assed job.

just sucks that the real enthusiasts get picked on.

time to turn your cars into track cars :D

    • UPDATE: Hi all!  As we are getting towards the end of this thread where I’ll showcase final dyno numbers and graph, I wanted to provide an update. Tao from HyperGear has done an amazing job building the custom divided T3 housing for the G30. Communication was flawless, price was great, and now the housing is estimated to arrive in 7-10 days! Very very pleased. I must add, if someone is looking for an affordable turbo and end up reading this thread, I would recommend HyperGear. Genuine brands are the way to go as their proven reliability, predictable performance, and there’s a plethora of information available for specs, flow, and more. This HyperGear recommendation is based on their excellent communication, dedication, and willingness to listen to their customers. I particularly liked their ability to create custom adaptations tailored to specific needs, which is a HUGE benefit over other brands. And if we consider the HyperGear provided dyno results, it adds reassurance knowing their turbos can compete against genuine brands. Next update will be after the dyno!
    • I've previously seen people post up "dress up bolt kits" for RBs but don't remember seeing them specify the full contents. I can only really suggest you grab the verniers and start measuring, and keep in mind the cam cover and timing cover bolts are both quite specific with a wider unthreaded section where the bushes sit, that will make it hard to get aftermarket replacements which tend to be all thread (set screws) or for longer bolts a flat section with a shorter threaded section at the end
    • I believe there was a similar one posted by @duggyphresh. They were re-routing their battery positive cable in the way I am also trying to achieve. Sorry, I’m new to this forum, so was a bit late to the party by a few months and so reignited the old thread, as I wanted to know how they got on with doing it.
