diff sound??

Hi.

On my car R32 GTST, when I get to about 80kmh, I hear a slight humming sound..

But it is not a constant single hum.. more like a wawawawawa.. (that's as good as I can type the sound..)

Can anyone tell me why it would do this?

It doesn't rattle, it is STILL LSD and not broken or anything..

No oil leaks..

Could it just be over abused from the previous owner or something?

Its sounds like a Wheel Bearing, make sure its not from the front, I had one on the front right that at the start I couldn't quite tell where it was coming from.

Then it got louder and around corners it sounded like it was going to fall off.

Fronts are quite expensive..

Rears 'should' be the same as a normal 200sx?!?! Am I right don't they have the same LSD's? or even a 300ZX?!?!?

As They have the same R200 Diff and same rear brakes as the R32 GTS-T..

My gearbox has a slight whine but it sounds like it comes from the diff.

I know this because when I change from fourth to fifth the wawawawa changes speed

It's definitly coming from the back.

even if I am going down a hill at about 80-90kms, and I take it out of gear an cruise down in nuetral, it still makes the sound.. the sound varies with speed..

Check the obvious first, have you got new tyres on the back recently??

A friend borrowed my wheels and rubber for rego, and for the day that i drove around on his Kumos there was a shitload of road noise, like you describe wawawawawawawawa, at any speed over 40km/h.

Never know your luck, it COULD be as simple as the condition of your rubber

Chances are I still think it is a wheel bearing at the speeds you are describing or possibly it could be tyres.

Usually when a diff is stuffed they will make noise when on and off the throttle due to the bearings being slack and the teeth not meshing properly.

Also for example Goodyear F1's are noturious for this. They are directional tyre and if you do not rotate them they will develop a whine at certian speeds.

I get a similiar sound in my 32 at the moment that i think is part the gearbox and (last night) i think could also be the tyres (as they are feathered), i don't know.. It also is probably part diff whine also Doesn't matter..

I used to really stress about gearbox/diff whines.

I bought a VS 5ltr V8 Manual which was only a few years old at the time with very low kays and that damn thing also whined.

Mind you that diff did end up carking its self and so did the gearbox along with the rear IRS chassis cracking through a diff bolt and the arse end dropping on the ground :confused:

Don't worry to much, check your oil levels and if it goes it goes.
