I just grafted a snorkel from an r31 airbox on the front of the lid, looks stock

I did the same thing to mine but i also used the snorkle and cut it down and put an angle on the end so it is angled down behind the headlight, looks factory and comparing the extra size to the factory intake its about 2/3 the size, so if the standard box is good for 250rwkw this mod will easily get me to the 300 or so im aiming for.

guys you are hell bent on the snorkel thing the air filter can only suck in as much air as it is design stick 10 snorkels and it still will only flow XXX CMF

BUT DO SOMETHING THAT HELPS FLOW MORE AIR IN WITH YOUR STOCK FILTER LIKE THIS AS I HAVE DONE LONG AGO.

hope this helps you can run some duct up to it to get cold air if you like.

i am not having a dig ant anyone making diy airboxes and sorry for hijacking your thread i just want to kno why everyone is so worried bout hot air in the intake of a turbo charged car... when air is compressed it gets really hot anyway, then it goes through the intercooler which obviously cools it... i have intake temp sensor on my cold side intercooler piping as i know heaps and heaps of other ppl here do also, i decided to see if there was any difference between stock air box and a pod, charge air temp was 16 C with pod and 15 C with air box boost was 16 psi and it was like 27 c day 1 degree is nothing when the correction for inlet air temp doesn's start till over 40 in my tune,

I can think of a good reason. The turbo is like the engine. It breathes volumetrically. If you feed it hot air, you get less mass sucked in for the same volume flow rate. This matters the most on turbos that are running up near the maximum capacity of the compressor, because the real solid limit to compressor flow is the sonic velocity in the inducer throat.

By the way. If you can get a lower pressure temperature* than ambient on the cold side of an intercooler, it means that the intercooler is putting up enough of a pressure drop to cause the reduction in boost pressure across the core to cause the temperature drop. If you think about it logically, there is no way that a steady state heat exchanger can make the hot stuff get colder than the cold stuff. There is also no way that a heatsink can make the hot stuff colder than the starting temperature of the heatsink (which of course is no colder than ambient). The only thermodynamic trick available is for expansion of the air (from pressure loss) to cause a non-adiabatic temperature drop.

If you are dropping a solid 10-12 degress below ambient, then the pressure drop must be quite large.

What this means is that you could instead use a lower delta P intercooler, not have to compress the air so hard, not put up so much resistance to exhaust flow in the turbine housing, and make the same or more power with less thermal stress on the engine.

* I edited my massive stuff up.

thanks for that i did not think of the volume of air getting sucked in to the turbo, just whats getting pushed into the engine.

cheers

true but i haven't seen one of those for a long time, didn't think anyone on here still did.

Im guessing you don't live in Vic? Cops here are big on the one intake mod which means either a fmic or pod, they also know about cutting the hole in the inner guard for the cold side and make you get an engineers for it, so for us Victorians a return flow fmic is the sensible option

well that sucks for owners in vic. you could stick the pod filter on the guard side with a pvc elbow hiding it.

I have thought about doing something like that, apparently the gtr air box has an intake pipe that comes out of the side of the box and into a hole in the side wall of the engine bay, this would be perfect for someone using a return flow fmic, not so good for me tho as my catch can is mounted there and i have abs!

it sounds like you have one problem after another.

Except your initial assumption that the air filter is a point of restriction is incorrect. The restriction is in the piping into the filter and into the turbo. The air filter will outflow the piping easily and that small filter of yours isn't helping all that much.

I was going to add a 2.5" pipe with a K&N filter in the guard but after some research it I considered it as no advantage over the intake mod.

feel free to try my box out and then you can make your assumption about your none restrictive filter.i did that's why i did it.if your making reasonable power you will know the difference.guess work is not my thing, try and fail or try and benefit.i have read guess work on sau far to much.i'd go with you 2.5'' k&n that will be a winner if it can be done nicely....

my opinion
