use an electric drill with a wire brush attachment to take the covers back to bare metal.

you can then polish, chrome or paint with heat resistant enamel paint.

Nice looking covers, i wish mine were that shiny.

I am not sure if i am correct in saying this and would love to be corrected if wrong.

From working at a metal fab business I learnt that when using different metals (ie. steel brush / alloy cover) you risk impregnating the metals. This could lead to some rusting/discolouration/corroding effect to the alloy.

We always used a cutting compound and a fabric mop to cut metals back to a shine, and then a polish compound on another fabric mop to make it really shine.
