Hi All

You's are going about this the wrong way, not being a smart arse, but many have solved their issues with our vent modification - oil flow / pressure restrictors, extra drains back to sump, mines baffles all helps but doesn't fix the problem.

We put pictures and set up on 3 years ago as to what we run on the R32 with standard sump and the R33 with extended sump - both cars have been doing track work for 4 years including Aussie Supersprints, Hillclimbs, World Time Attack and sports sedan racing, Bathurst Regularity and Irace, not a single oil issue on AO50's or slicks.

Prior to changes both cars would fill a 2 and a half to 3ltr catch can in 2 x 40 second hillclimb runs.

See picture attached of R33, vent system - the trick is to let the engine breathe without pushing the oil out - you will not stop any engine from breathing under power, the slower the air flow the less oil it will push out, with R26's they fill the back of the tapet covers up and thats where the vents are and they have no choice but to pump the oil out.

The front vent halves the air flow / breathing, and example under acceleration if rear vents are submerged front works fine - vise versa - the only thing you can't see from catch can behind headlight - R33 has drain back to sump with a light earles one way valve and a splash plate over cam's under oil filler cap

Mine has 25 covers with another 2 extra baffled fittings installed at the rear, like a 26 cover, didn't fix my problems though, the oil air separator above the motor may be doing the hard work maybe ?

I can't find any pics of our 33, so i'll do it from memory.

The divers side PCV valve is hooked to the drivers side cover (as per factory)

Other drivers side cover goes to a oil air separator on passenger tower

Separator has a drain to sump, and a big port at the top that goes to a big catch can.

one passengers side cover goes to the big catch can, and I can remember where the other port goes.

I don't think many of them do the speed series events but plenty of the AL guys are in high hp gtr's that get punted regularly at no limits events etc. The thing they all seem to have in common is xspeed so they must have there head around the problem.

I had a look at the five R's at the last round of the SES - Wanneroo last year. There was five cars and five different catch can set ups and five differing states of engine newness. But none of them had issues - then again none of them had the big oil pumps.....

Don't really know any of the cool kids over at Antilag and havent been to a no limits thing in years.

Cheers. Sounds a bit like a Nismo separator plus catch can. I have the Nismo bit atleast.

What Stuart said is dead on the money. The solution is all about providing an avenue for the engine to breathe where it doesn't have to push oil out with it. I am in the process of pretty much duplicating the setup he has -> I only wish I'd read about it rather than having to come up with the answer after 3 years of cleaning oil out of my engine bay.

One other thing - the one way valve on the drain from the catch can to the sump is a MUST. Otherwise the oil gets forced up the drain and will fill your secondary catch can.

Is this so even if the drain goes to the hot side of the sump, this one way valve is something I havent looked at, is it a EARLS or SPEED FLOW product ?

You owe me a rum one day - couple of pics attached - had to jack car up and lay on my back to get this photo lol

Our one way valve is definitely Earls (sorry no part #'s) if you cant' find PM me - this was only added to R33 as precaution to vent system as sometimes ran slicks - EC sub 1.39's / 1.40's on AO50's & 1.01's Wakefield Park - Note - this is Nitto Oil pump - consistently runs 4 bar plus

The ugly pic is the prototype on K''s R32 - that runs consistent 1.03's Wakefield Park AO50's // 1.44's at EC - please note this system used to have catch can pump back to sump (electric) - but has been disgarded for 3 years has no oil return to sump from catch can (after a day at Wakefield from catch can drain - we might get 10 drops of oil - 15 drops of water)

80,000km N1 spec engine - no issues whatsoever. Note - no head oil restrictors whatsoever - runs 3 plus bar - full factory engine head has not been off this engine. R32 is daily driver, R33 is registered but caged

For the last 7 years we have used Nulon Synthetic 20W- 50W in both engines - no issues.

Thanks for the pics, rang about the one way valve yesterday, they say it needs 3 psi to open, which would mean the can wouldn't ever return the oil from the can to the sump as I don't think the weight of the oil would be enough to open the valve.

I'm looking at a air oil separator above the cam covers prior to the can now.

Pull the spring out of the one way valve. I did that on mine, and my tuner does it on his cars. The valve still stops oil getting out of the sump

Would it be better to put the oil return fitting a bit higher on the sump ( about where the hole for the dip stick is on the standard sump baffle tray ) so there less chance

of it pushing oil up there. Or at the back of the sump on the drivers side so it's away from the oil in the sump or is it not that simple?

"Ive been told" to put it on the hot side as the spinning crank produces a low pressure zone on that side of the sump, where as the cold side has a high pressure zone.

If the drivers side of the crankcase can breathe adequately and your blowby/leakdown isnt shit house then you wont have the oil control issues.

20% leakdown is rebuild time for a performance engine. Might be close to acceptable for a stock street car....no way is it even remotely acceptable for a high powered street/race car. Leakdown should be less then 5% after a refresh/rebuild or even lower.

If you have high leakdown and consequently alot of blow by then you wont ever cure the oil filling your catch can issue.

just wondering, for the setup of the r32, does it drain back to the sump from the catch can also?

are all the catch cans non-vented?

As Stuarts example shows there are very simple ways around this problem. My answer was the "Autech style" catch can from Just Jap, with an extra return welded into the front (at the very bottom) which goes to fitting in the top of the oil filler cap. After a hill climb without this setup the car was pretty smokey, having clearly pumped a lot of oil into the cooler etc. After a pretty hard day at Goulburn the inlet is pristine, and it has not used a drop..

I know this is one car and one day, but does it need to be any more complicated than that??

    • First up, I wouldn't use PID straight up for boost control. There's also other control techniques that can be implemented. And as I said, and you keep missing the point. It's not the ONE thing, it's the wrapping it up together with everything else in the one system that starts to unravel the problem. It's why there are people who can work in a certain field as a generalist, IE a IT person, and then there are specialists. IE, an SQL database specialist. Sure the IT person can build and run a database, and it'll work, however theyll likely never be as good as a specialist.   So, as said, it's not as simple as you're thinking. And yes, there's a limit to the number of everything's in MCUs, and they run out far to freaking fast when you're designing a complex system, which means you have to make compromises. Add to that, you'll have a limited team working on it, so fixing / tweaking some features means some features are a higher priority than others. Add to that, someone might fix a problem around a certain unrelated feature, and that change due to other complexities in the system design, can now cause a new, unforseen bug in something else.   The whole thing is, as said, sometimes split systems can work as good, and if not better. Plus when there's no need to spend $4k on an all in one solution, to meet the needs of a $200 system, maybe don't just spout off things others have said / you've read. There's a lot of misinformation on the internet, including in translated service manuals, and data sheets. Going and doing, so that you know, is better than stating something you read. Stating something that has been read, is about as useful as an engineering graduate, as all they know is what they've read. And trust me, nearly every engineering graduate is useless in the real world. And add to that, if you don't know this stuff, and just have an opinion, maybe accept what people with experience are telling you as information, and don't keep reciting the exact same thing over and over in response.
    • How complicated is PID boost control? To me it really doesn't seem that difficult. I'm not disputing the core assertion (specialization can be better than general purpose solutions), I'm just saying we're 30+ years removed from the days when transistor budgets were in the thousands and we had to hem and haw about whether there's enough ECC DRAM or enough clock cycles or the interrupt handler can respond fast enough to handle another task. I really struggle to see how a Greddy Profec or an HKS EVC7 or whatever else is somehow a far superior solution to what you get in a Haltech Nexus/Elite ECU. I don't see OEMs spending time on dedicated boost control modules in any car I've ever touched. Is there value to separating out a motor controller or engine controller vs an infotainment module? Of course, those are two completely different tasks with highly divergent requirements. The reason why I cite data sheets, service manuals, etc is because as you have clearly suggested I don't know what I'm doing, can't learn how to do anything correctly, and have never actually done anything myself. So when I do offer advice to people I like to use sources that are not just based off of taking my word for it and can be independently verified by others so it's not just my misinterpretation of a primary source.

    • As I said, there's trade offs to jamming EVERYTHING in. Timing, resources etc, being the huge ones. Calling out the factory ECU has nothing to do with it, as it doesn't do any form of fancy boost control. It's all open loop boost control. You mention the Haltech Nexus, that's effectively two separate devices jammed into one box. What you quote about it, is proof for that. So now you've lost flexibility as a product too...   A product designed to do one thing really well, will always beat other products doing multiple things. Also, I wouldn't knock COTS stuff, you'd be surprised how many things are using it, that you're probably totally in love with As for the SpaceX comment that we're working directly with them, it's about the type of stuff we're doing. We're doing design work, and breaking world firsts. If you can't understand that I have real world hands on experience, including in very modern tech, and actually understand this stuff, then to avoid useless debates where you just won't accept fact and experience, from here on, it seems you'd be be happy I (and possibly anyone with knowledge really) not reply to your questions, or input, no matter how much help you could be given to help you, or let you learn. It seems you're happy reading your data sheets, factory service manuals, and only want people to reinforce your thoughts and points of view. 
    • I don't really understand because clearly it's possible. The factory ECU is running on like a 4 MHz 16-bit processor. Modern GDI ECUs have like 200 MHz superscalar cores with floating point units too. The Haltech Nexus has two 240 MHz CPU cores. The Elite 2500 is a single 80 MHz core. Surely 20x the compute means adding some PID boost control logic isn't that complicated. I'm not saying clock speed is everything, but the requirements to add boost control to a port injection 6 cylinder ECU are really not that difficult. More I/O, more interrupt handlers, more working memory, etc isn't that crazy to figure out. SpaceX if anything shows just how far you can get arguably doing things the "wrong" way, ie x86 COTS running C++ on Linux. That is about as far away from the "correct" architecture as it gets for a real time system, but it works anyways.
