djr81, yep got you now, makes sense. I couldn't agree more, I've little interest in V8SC motor entertainment but one thing I know is the Kelly's are not the team I'd want representing my brand.

Action Dan, apology accepted.

I could go back and edit my now obviously incorrect posts, but I'm too lazy so it can just stay wrong.

Dude its the interweb. Dont worry about getting stuff wrong just shout louder.

As for the other bloke - I did some research. Turns out the 91 & 92 SATCC was run in the middle of a recession with some of the smallest fields on record.

Still Freddo's mob had the advantage of being backed by people selling lung cancer and a car company losing money hand over fist.

Still the PR gains of calling all the other teams idiots, of suing the governing body, of calling the fans arseholes and of pouring a bucket of scorn over Holdens product whilst at the same time taking their money was brilliant. Actually that wasnt research, that is just what I can remember from watching the thing unfold at the time.

Its a bit rich using the cigarette advertising as a reason to knock Fred, half the bloody field had cancer stick sponsors.

You can only beat the opposition you're up against.

As for the rest of your points, nothing to do with the car. Your beef is with the team owner or drivers.

I grew up in the old days of the ATCC and I'd almost prefer those years over the contrived motor entertainment we get from Cochrane and his circus today. I also dislike the negative impact V8SC has on our dedicated race circuits throughout the country. Their preference for international events and street circuits in pursuit of the almighty dollar means our grass roots competition suffers with tracks such as Malalla falling by the wayside. I'll stick to my Improved Production (car 74 SA IPRA) at least its more about the motorsport and less about dollars.

Johnson only briefly had tobacco money in 1982 and at that it was only a small amount. In the early 90's Shell was the tile sponsor with support from Palmers Tubemills, Ford & Dunlop. He was one of the very few of that era to go through a top line career will almost no reliance on tobacco money.

As for the V8 mob they are a business - so as much as I cant stand Cochrane & his methods you cant blame Archer capital for their ways. On the upside some circuits have/will benefit from the lobbying, Wanneroo will for example. The big winner, however, has been the team owners. Holders of the rights to enter their cars own something worth millions, whereas back in the day it wasnt worth squat.

Anyway you cant blame high level motor sport for the state of club competition. The two exist in different worlds. Although I am prepared to blame Micheal Schumacher in particular and Ferrari in general for my R32 R not being competitive anymore.

Woah hold on there buddy, I simply said I could go back and correct it, to make me look good. I said nothing about an apology.

Presumptuous much?

There's nothing wrong with the level of club competition, over 60 cars at the IPRA Nats end of last year, strong comps in each state. But there's little the low budget IPRA can do about the state of their local race track. Without the premier class to inject funds or encourage state government to do so the IPRA have to make do with what they've got. And bad luck if the V8SC choose to use a street circuit instead, cause that means once the party is over the track ceases to exist.

I know you didn't offer an apology, I just took it. My humour is probably a touch subtle.

*sigh* I guess

Didn't they run a stock R35 around Bathurst and it was slower than a heavily modified V8SC so therefore V8s are the best uleh~

For what it is worth I watched the group A touring car races back in the day. They werent a patch on the rpesent day races for depth of field, quality of racing and professionalism.

RE: Professionalism and depth, you could say the same thing about any other Australian sport back in the mid 80s to early 90s...

as for the quality of racing. It wasn't a control category! It was production based cars using production components. Having the whole field qualify within 1 second because the cars are 99.99% the same does not make it "quality" racing, any more than HQ's are the pinnacle of racing. It was such a completely different type of racing, it was almost a different sport. Don't bother comparing it to single make racing like the V8s.

Well that is sorted then. Now we can go back to trolling and not apologising.

Actually I just noticed that people have. Sweet.

As for the 'banned' comments, the facts remain that from the beginning of the 1993 ATCC season turbocharged cars were no longer permitted resulting in the banning of both the GT-R and Ford Sierra.

by that logic they banned the Corollas because they were afraid of them too

by that logic they banned the Corollas because they were afraid of them too

By what logic? The 1993 rules forbid turbocharging, simple as that. The Corolla, BMW M3 etc. All continued to compete. The V8SC series began with the inaugural 1997 season, at which point only Ford and Holden pushrod 5 litre engine sedans were permitted.

John Teulan is the name of the guy that owned and drove the silver 33 GT-R in the old Nations Cup - later replaced by Aust GT. Teulan's 33 GT-R was always going to struggle against vastly more powerful and newer exotics... and Teulan himself, not exactly the sharpest driver in the field (don't think he won anything in over a decade of trying).

Yeah that's him, I couldn't remember his name. Lack of any real talent didn't help the dude, and tuning of GTR's was still in it's infancy way back then (at least here in Oz anyway).

I remember buying a set of "Nismo Grp A" turbos of his R33 when he got out of it circa 2001. No wonder it was so slow, they were truly appalling. Even N1's offered better performance. haha

And the NA Sierra that ran up against them. They didnt run in the same grid though. I watched the Amaroo round in 93 and recall that they had their own race.

Was that Steve Ellery? An ex Seton Sierra?

I think I can almost remember the last round for 93 - Sandown perhaps with the 2 & 5 litre cars all on the same grid. mAybe they did some separate heat & grouped others. Too long ago.

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
