Hey all,

Following on from the amazing turnout and great day of the December Track day we here at SAU:NSW bring you the first trackday of 2012!

And to make things better for you we have lowered the price!

Its at Wakefield Park and as we all know it doesnt need much of an introduction to most of you, to anyone thats never heard of Wakefield Park this is a very safe track about 2 hours from Sydney where you can drive your pride and joy as fast as you like with safe run off areas and no speed cameras to worry about!

If you've never driven on a track before and want someone experienced to give you instruction and help with how to drive better, faster or safer, or even if you've done a couple of trackdays and just want to ask some questions (no matter how silly they may seem) we have this at no extra charge available throughout the day.

For the trackday format is our usual Driver Training day which means there will be no Official timing. (means the day is cheaper for you) and for those that need to know, there are plenty of options including iphone/android apps that you can view here http://www.skylinesa...988-lap-timers/

Rest assured that there will be plenty of opportunity to run your car through its paces or come out for a first time and learn how to track your car.

Ok so here's the details;

Date: 24th March 2012

Where: Wakefield Park (www.wakefieldpark.com.au for directions)

Who: Anyone with any car (doesnt have to be a Skyline)

What: Trackday, suits total beginner to advanced

What time should I get there: 8am at Scruitineering for experienced, 730am for beginners (Scruit finishes at 840am sharp, if you're late you need to wait until the day has started so the rest of the group isnt held up)

How much: SAUNSW members $170 per driver, non members price $190 per driver.

Passengers: Allowed on passenger sessions free of charge, must wear helmet and same clothing as drivers aswel as sign an indemnity form.

Licence needed: CAMS L2S or AASA club licence ($50 for 12 months, yes you can arrange this on the day no worries)

How the day runs;

Firstly, when you arrive at the track, find a place to park and empty all loose objects out of the car. Ensure there's nothing loose in the engine bay and no leaks, brake lights work and you have all ur wheel nuts on etc. Then drive your car to the scruitineering shed (its marked, but if you dont know where it is, follow where everyone else goes or just ask someone, its very easy to find, directly on the left as you enter from the highway).

Your car will be checked to make sure its safe to go on the track and it will then be assigned a number which is your number for the day.

You then park the car back in your original spot and go to the office to sign on. Take your licence with you or if you dont have one, this is where you can get one.

Once you've signed on its now time to wait for the drivers brief to begin (which will be announced on the loud speakers throughout the pits and starts at 845am sharp).

Once the drivers brief is over, all the drivers are split into groups based on experience so that everyone is comfortable in their group. One group is then allowed on the track at one time for evenly timed sessions, once one group comes off, another goes on, this repeats until the end of the day with a short break around lunch so officials and helpers can get some food and drinks.

Thats basically it! The only way to secure a spot is through sending in an entry form and payment to the SAUNSW account. The very basic entry form is attached to this post and the bank details are below;

SAUNSW bank details:

Bank - NAB

Branch - Marrickville

Account name - Skylines Australia NSW

BSB - 082 356

Account number - 546 393 766

Please put your FULL NAME in the description, eg "JOE SMITH"

Cheers,

David

Yup need to send in the form so we have all your contact details - and please fill it in completely Pat. I mean life revolves around forms, we all know this.

Ryan, you're spot on my friend. We have sessions set aside for newbs and will have some of our more experienced drivers available for pointers.

Just a couple of pointers for ya that you can do before the day.

Bleed your brakes and if you don't already have a high temp brake fluid replace with some good high rated stuff. I just mention this cause most don't know how hard the high speeds/deceleration on the track is on brake pads and fluid temps. This is another reason we only run 12 minute sessions. 8-10 hard laps really heat things up.

Then just give your car a once over for your own peace of mind. Just look for leaks or anything loose that should be tightened up.

Also, on the day after a session don't set your handbrake. Your rotors are super hot and if you set your hand brake it can seize the pads to the rotors or warp the rotors. The pits are flat but if you want bring a block of wood for a wheel chock.

You'll come away with the biggest smile after your first track day. Pull me aside if you can catch me and I'll try to give you some more pointers.

form sent payment paid :)

how many people are going now??

seems to be alot of new people so far, great to get new people driving their cars how they should where they should!

also, can i drive without a headlight for a cold air intake??? :)

i had a go today, got all but one bolt out which is behind the bloody front bar zzz haha

might be able to reach it when i take the gaurds out as i was scrubbing last wakie there coming out anyways so well see. if i cant do it, i cant do it.

Ooops no charge for passengers they just have to sign on at the office. (Hey Dave can you fix that up?)

We cap the day at 40 entrants. It has always been our view that fewer cars on the track and fewer groups means you get more open space on the track and more track time. That is the SAU value proposition.

We're actually running this track day at a loss that is subsidised by other club activities.

I did some rough maths with the 2012 price rise we got late notice of and wondering how you were doing it for that price even without timing. I think its fairly safe to say you wont see a cheaper club day unless they're inviting at least 50% more people.

From memory you actually have to take the front bumper off to get to that bolt, it's a PITA.

I don't think you'll find it worth it either, by removing the light you're potentially allowing air into the engine bay in a different spot then intended, and this can decrease how much air goes through your radiator and IC...

yeah righto, do you think i should run my pod without a box or run my a high flow panel filter with the stock snorkel?

or build a box for the box with some sheet metal?

Hey Jarrad,,,use this one "run my a high flow panel filter with the stock snorkel". Nissan spent big bucks getting it right mate.

Cheers

Neil.

    • In a few years from now, you'll regret that. It'll eat away at you, knowing the truth of the ugly hiding beneath the beautiful exterior... 😛
    • I don't think the G2 profile is particularly dangerous for the engine per se, more just are you actually ok with the turbo lag trade-offs? If the answer is yes then go for it. I personally don't think I'd be ok with it because I spend so much time at lower RPMs and I really enjoy the feeling of being able to stay in 5th gear on the highway and just roll into the throttle to get boost. Or staying in 3rd gear on "gentle canyon cruises" without feeling the turbo lag too badly. The 525 pump should be able to run flat out on factory lines but I would bet the pressure drop from pump to regulator is quite impressive. I don't know how much it would be exactly but I've seen figures like 30 psi thrown around.
    • It's interesting seeing everyone talk about what level of risk they are happy to tolerate.  Building a GTR always has a level of risk, you could be that lucky guy that drops 20k on the engine build alone and still has the thing go pop on the dyno. Life is fun like that.  The way I see it, the thing is a toy to be enjoyed. I'd be happy to turn up the power on stock motor and limit the risk with sensible tuning and engine protection. If it still goes pop, it is what it is. The car isn't a daily driver so it can happily sit while a plan is made to sort it out.  Given this thing will be a street car only, I really feel it's worth the (relatively small if managed well) risk to turn the power up to around 350KW on e85.  I don't think anyone getting into the skyline game now is doing it out of logic. Surely it is a purely emotional decision so I'm not sure how important it is to think about the engine build logically. The heart wants what it wants.  @joshuaho96 little note for Josh, I run my 525 pump flat out all the time and through the factory lines without any issues. (excluding the melting connectors, that's sorted now. we'll pretend it never happened lol)
    • But the Nexus S3 is very expensive and won't be as purpose-built for the application as a separate electronic boost controller :^) More seriously my pet issue here would be that the Walbro 525 running at 100% duty cycle is going to require more FPR than the stock setup can handle. I'm also pretty sure from what I've seen elsewhere you might want to slow down the pump regardless unless you're going to come up with some way of upsizing the fuel lines coming from the fuel tank. Factory 8mm fuel line doesn't actually flow very much if you want to keep pressure drop down between the fuel pump outlet and FPR. If you really want to "keep it simple" I would run only as much pump as you need and source a fuel pump controller to slow down the pump in the vain hope of being able to run stock-style FPRs which are pretty dinky. Or just use the HICAS lines and it should be mostly fine. OP should also really think hard about what profile they'd want out of the turbo. My pet choice here would be the G1 profile rather than anything higher power but YMMV. I already think ~stock turbo lag is pretty bad so I don't want to make it worse. In "gentle canyon cruising" I found that I spent a lot of time around 4-4.5k RPM. I also recommend DIYing labor if you're detail-oriented enough. Costs are high for labor + if you do it yourself you can be your own quality control.
    • GTSBoy is again on the money. My actual advice? Sell the car. (really). For what it's worth as is, you can sidegrade into something much better. If you care about function then this is the actual move. If you want a Skyline to perform, set aside about $100K to do it. This is NOT a typo. You will see right away these are two very different mindsets. Realistically we're talking full restomod for any Skyline still kicking around. Have an honest think about which one you are.. and what you want to do, and how much you want to invest in this (with no return).
