As the title says i think it would be a good idea to compile a list of what is a legal modification and what is not............ and i'll update the first post accordingly to keep it all easily excessable.

BOV - Legal if plumbed back

BOV - Illegal if vented to atmosphere

Large Injecters - Illegal

Piggyback ECU - Illegal

Injectors and ecu? really? Why?

Different to OEM; therefore potential emissions issues. I believe that ECU's can be engineered, but I think they have to have a "Security Code" locking out modifications to the tune.

Nothing stopping you from having a code; don't see the point though.rolleyes.gif

Here's how I see it.

Standard or standard equivelent = Legal

Anything else = Iilegal and your a hoon.

The "rules" are so hazzy atm. There is a new engineering statutory in place, but no specifacations onto the changes and how it affects "car enthusiasts" (i.e hoons, f**king ACA dream boats).

This is the source. There is too much rubbish floating around online about mods and legality etc. This is from DOTARS, and for example, I'll take an excerpt from the "Engine" section. By Certification, it means inspection and certification under state road/traffic authorities Ie in NSW, that would be VSCCS after they made "engineers certs" defunct.

This must be read in conjunction with the ADR's.

1.1 BASIC MODIFICATIONS NOT REQUIRING CERTIFICATION

The following are Basic Modifications that may be performed without certification providing the

modifications are carried out in compliance with the requirements detailed in Clause 2 General

Requirements:

 Fitting a replacement new, used or reconditioned engine;

 Fitting a manufacturer’s optional engine together with any associated components as

supplied by the manufacturer for that same model vehicle;

 Fitting replacement original equipment engine and exhaust components;

 Fitting replacement original equipment, equivalent or better, components that have no

influence on engine performance or emissions (e.g. higher volume oil pump than original);

and

 Fitting equivalent engines with an increase of up to 20% of original power.

In all of the above cases, if the engine is modified, it must be certified under the relevant Code

of Section LA.

1.2 MODIFICATIONS REQUIRING CERTIFICATION UNDER LA CODES

The following is a summary of modifications that may be performed under Section LA:

 Fitting engines greater than 120% of original power and/or engine mass;

 Fitting performance engines;

 Fitting engines from non original equipment sources;

 Installing a supercharger or turbocharger; and

 Modifying the engine and engine components that results in an increase in engine power

of more than 20% and/or affects exhaust emissions.

I think we will ALL be stuffed.

The bit about engine replacement is con fusing.On the one hand it says I can fit a 25DET to replace the DE, Then it says I cant have an engine with more than 20% extra grunt.

I wonder how all the N/A Skyline guys get on when turboing their DEs.

    • Everything I found online said never use it because it'll dramatically reduce belt lifespan.  No, but I have seen excessive v-belt tension cause the audible bearing noise from excessive radial load in things like alternators. So don't overdo it. Ideally you set it to manufacturer spec using a proper belt tension guage. I tried the "clicker" type gauges but those cheap things are trash. They read way too low even when you're careful.
    • This is kind of where I've ended up for the most part. It's easier for me, easier for shops that don't have to deal with my weird criteria/picky standards, etc.
    • Will do. Suprised if it's not the starter motor considering it's 30 years old. Will get a volt meter though. Battery is close to new.   Cheers for your help, always appreciated.
    • This almost never happens these days. No. Clean your battery terminals and make sure they are tight. Use sandpaper on a dowel if you have to, to get oxidation off the inside of the terminals, particularly on the -ve. Check the earth cable from battery post to chassis ground and engine ground. Make sure the contact surfaces are clean - including the threads on the bolts that anchor them - because that's where a lot of the contact occurs. Wire wheel on a drill is a good thing for this. Make sure the crimps on those cables are all sound. Assuming none of that causes an improvement: Check the battery voltage after it has been resting for a while. If it's at the lower end of the range, put it on charge for a while, then see if it will crank better.
    • I just checked my belt, it wasn't super loose but I could bend it past 90 degrees a small amount so I tightened it up and for the first time ever my car didn't crank first time, had to crank it again lol. Don't know if that was because I tightened the belt or if it's my starter motor going out (been having slow starts for some time). Coulda also been when I was recording I didn't crank the key properly and it didn't save the recording lol.   Is that a thing if you overtighten a belt it struggles to start?
