R32 Gtr - Intercooler Pipe Came Off, Then Fixed It Now Its Got A Ugly Misfire

Recommended Posts

Hey Fellas

R32 GTR 94 model Standard Motor/ Standard turbos / Standard intercooler.

Just Recently took the intercooler off and cleaned it up and reinstalled it ( The intercooler was completely dry, Was left for a week in the sun )

I Reinstalled the clamp that tighted the intercooler pipe and today it seemed like it suddenly striped out and it felt really tight but it wasn't, So maybe this was the case for the pipe blowing off ( Manifold side )

I also made a CAI intake too for my pods but they aren't covered just yet.

Problem is we took her for a spin on the M4 Today and she was Idling really well and drove Perfectly fine till we hit abit of boost ( about 4000rpm ) The intercooler pipe on the manifold side poped off and suddenly had a massive misfire which was quickly noticed so we pulled over to get a towey

But i attached the intercooler piping again and it still has a very ugly idle like it misfires heaps... We left it run for about 10 mins .... It sorta got abit better here and dere, But im scared to drive it incase i do damage.... She idles up and down 1000rpm down to 700 then back up and down... My dad gave her a rev and it backfired like a gun 3 times.

This car has newish iridium spark plugs and newish yellow jacket coil packs too ( Under 3000 kms old )

Anyone have any advice for me please ?? Tune ? Take her for a spin up the road to clear her throat ?

Please help if you can... Thanks so much.

what colour is the smoke? im guessing black? sounds like you still have a leak in your cooler pipe like bad seal, loose clamp

The Smoke was black when it poped off but now that i've attached the pipe back on there is no smoke at all but just runs up and down ... I've Got to admit its gotten alot better by idling it out... When the intercooler pipe came off it kept stalling as expected, but then once i attached the pipe back on it idled bad for few mins then fixed itself ALOT but still not 100% thats why i said maybe i should take her for a spin and that would spit all the excess crap out that may have be chocked up when the f**k up occured?

well if it was me i would take it for a spin see how it goes wouldnt hammer it tho, just see if it likes reving if not mybe try reseting the ecu??

Yeah was thinking the same thing ay, even the same thing about the ecu, I should try it , Thanks heaps

For anyone else maybe all comments are highly appreciated .

Check the spark plugs

U reckon maybe they got flooded ??

Dad was thinking that too

They are brand new Iridium spark plugs so i hope they arnt f**ked.

thanks for the advice !!

Check the spark plugs for sure. happen to me about a month ago. Intercooler pipe blew off. Put it back on, car still misfired. Checked plugs and they were completely black.

Check plugs! Its a 5 min job.

Thanks so much !!!! I will be doing this 110% then.

So what did u do with the plugs is it a clean job or throw away and buy new ones?

Maybe its worth just buying the copper ones now considering this is how easy sparkies can get f**ked up ?

I didnt buy the iridium spark plugs, the previous owner did but receipts show it was 2011 and cars havent been driven much since then.

Ur plugs are probably fouled, replace them With normal plugs and take it for a drive, when ur cooler pipe blew off it would have gone into limp mode, they run reslly rich in limp mode. A nice long drive should sort it out

Yeah check the plugs, they will foul like crazy if you pop a hose off.

I've used coppers on all of my performance cars, cheap and good to go. Don't have the life of iridiums, but then

I'm paying like 24 bucks for 6 of them, so i just change them more often.

Same here with the coppers, i've use coppers in everything i own and never had any dramas, they are a lot cheaper than platinums or iridiums and do the same job,

Thats for the Advice fellas i really appreciate it ,

I will have to check this asap :) Hopefully its my case too and yeah ill be buying the cheap copper ones and replacing them more often, how often do they usually last ?

Hey Fellas, Thanks for all your responses, Turns out the spark plugs were fouled which is great news, I've Cleaned them up and now the car runs like a dream again. :) !!

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
    • Thanks for sharing this, and BTW if your headlights are in good condition they are worth thousands....you might want to consider replacing them with brand new LED ones like this (https://www.nengun.com/78works/full-led-headlights-r32-skyline) and making enough profit to buy a house in Sydney
