Hello just been looking through all the el cheapo turbos and have been wondering if these are worth the risk. I have been sussing out reviews from around 2006, They all seem to say steer clear but while there is not many newer posts they seem to like them quite a bit more. While my turbo is fine i probably wont chuck one on but when i run into some more money again i might.

While You may see that as being stupid here is my take on them

- I have had many of friends blow HKS, Garrett etc but thats not really frowned upon if they cack it or need rebuilding but if an ebay one dies its all like ' its crap dont get it etc " im not dissing the bigger brands im just saying the ebay ones do seem to get alot of hate

- Through new technology and experience in the turbo industry i believe they would have learnt from there mistakes to an extent. I do understand the build quality will not be as good as a HKS or whatever but i reckon they would be alright i have heard loads of good things about monsta. That being said on all the old posts alot of bad

- If 3 or 4 people lunch em that could be all it takes it ruin a business. People talk. I see people whinge when there commodore engine blows after 50000k's of not being serviced and they will forever steer clear because its so unreliable blah blah. But if you have a engine that lasts 5000000 thats been serviced you wont hear how reliable it has been.

Anyways thats just my 2c on the matter. I understand you get what you pay for but really keen on experiences/stories of others. Chuck in ya 2c's :D

At 120,000 rpm would you trust a cheap product. When they fail they there is a possibility that it will take the engine with it.

Sure the big names have failed but on a 10k build when your talking the difference of maybe $1000 I wouldn't risk it!

The only sort of direct dealings i've had with an ebay turbo;

RB30E+T

GT35R equivalent cheap turbo

- On idle, the turbine would not spin, at all. It would sit there and wait until there was enough exhaust gas flow to start turning the turbine. Probably a combination of a too large exhaust housing plus really crap bearings.

- It seized after doing 2,000 odd kms or so.

I'd steer clear. If you want a cheap turbo, i believe the kinugawa turbos are ok, and i believe the kando dynamics are ok for the money. I have had nothing to do with either though.

Sooooooooooo many threads on the shit monsta/generic t3-t4 turbos they are a waste of time and even if it makes the power you will get rubbish power delivery.

Hypergears and kandos are pretty cheap as far as im concerned and have been proven.

I read some pretty sad stuff on borg warner turbos here on SAU so dont know bout that.

Better read it again then mate, BW make fantastic high quality turbos. It's only the EFR range that had some problems, though those appear to be a thing of the past now too.

Garrett, hks, kando, Borg Warner or hypergear. Anything else means you're a tard and should sell your car and buy a hyundai excel.

Here's the thing. Big brand turbos usually fail because someone associated with the job was an idiot. Either just a ham fisted idiot, or an ignorant idiot, or one who closes his eyes puts hands over ears and says "lalalalalala" when he knows he's pushing a turbo past what is wise. If everything - selection, installation and use - of turbos was done properly, the failure rate of big brand turbos would be even lower than it is now.

Here's the other thing. Cheap arse eBay turbos usually fail because they're chosen and installed by cheaper versions of the idiots above. All the idiot related failure modes apply, and on top of that, the turbos have an inherently higher chanceof just being a bad product by nature of where they come from and the level of technology in them.

There was a generic bok choi T3-4 hybrid shitheap bastard of a turbo on my rb20 when i bought it. it lasted about 10,000K all up (including the time spent in the car before i bought it) before the oil seal let go. It was crap.

    • True, might get it looked at. Found out you can in fact flatten the 12v battery relatively easily too the other day (kids lefts the hazards on) so meaning to get that checked in the new year. What's odd is it'll blow cold from both vents if you have the ac down as low as poss (18), but anything else the passenger one blows warmish. Also has been summer since I got it obvs but noticed it didn't seem to want to blow hot last night when we had a cold snap. 
    • You ask for things. You specifically state you want responsiveness. A link was provided for a far superior, more responsive option. Find a MX5 workshop that will install it for you. Maybe MX5 Mania will throw on the Fab9 kit. It seems they want to charge almost 14K installed for their kit, so if they charge you $6K to install the FAB9 kit then you'll be ahead? Though really, the 2.5 with a 2860 running low boost will more or less feel as good as anything else. It's a lot of displacement and a small turbo. Think of a more modern RB26 with one stock turbo :p TBH, truth be told I've been driving my own car, and use about 50% throttle at most for 99.9% of the time. Mr Bogan is likely similar so this is all going to be semantics for the use case he actually has. (He'll be happy with anything relative to now) However, the EFR is hands down far superior in this use case. You really, really, really, really do notice it over the Garrett or equivalent.

    • Gents, it will be getting the MX5 Mania kit and the 2.5 will be staying where it is My query was about the 0.64 or the 0.86, whilst the 0.64 might spool a bit faster, would the 0.86 be better IRT EGT and mechanical sympathy, with only a small difference in spool And as I assume I won't need alot of boost to get to 200kw, probably around 10 psi, and with max rpm at 6500, would high EGT even really be a issue with a 0.64 I'm heading into MX5 Mania at the end of Jan to discuss the install, so any info is welcome prior to that Basically have a chat and book a time so they can throw on the turbo kit, and fit a oil cooler with a thermostat, drive in drive out of course  In other news: just finished cleaning the car inside and out, it's now all ready to get covered in bugs and dirt driving to Goulburn tomorrow to lunch,  and go for a stroll along woolondilly River with the daughter and her boy, and of course, visit my grandcats and my new grandpuppy 
    • Sounds like it has an actual problem with mode select doors, or something.
