Hello everyone...again! a few months ago i built a rb25, and ever since it was running their was a really high pitch squeal coming from the engine and i had no clue wat it was until yesturday i took off the cam covers and found metal shavings at the first cam cap, so i took it off, and what do i find? the cam cap and camshaft have been worn VERY badly, wat can cause this? no oil getting to it? over tightening the bolts? i didnt install the cams, we sent it to our local machine shop and got the block/head cleaned up, also installed tomei valve springs. ill post up a picture so you can all see how bad it is...

From those phots it appears to be Abrasive wear which is probably due to lack of sufficient lubrication. It seams weird that it etched the middle of the cam bearing surface away. My guess is they possibly tunnel bored the cam bore and forgot to debur the oil feed cause both a blockage of the oil passage and significantly higher loading on the middle section of the cam journal. Really hard to tell just from those photos.

did they do any machining? was it the original cap from that engine installed on the correct side? if so lack of oil is the only reason for that to happen, but to get that bad it must have been getting no oil whatsoever. what does the oil feed look like?

If you put the cap on the wrong side and the top half overlaps the bottom half on the leading side, it will start removing material from the cap as it rotates. The removed material will just stay there, stuck in the middle and continuing to wear the cam away like a big clump of camf*ck

at JONNOHR31, i dont exactly know what they machined, my brother got the machining work, the engine was my school project for HSC, i built most of it, brother payed for it all...

at abr33, we first started the engine in around july 2011, and since 16th feb, it probably has only been started ~15 times.

is this at all repairable, or a new head is needed now? definately a new cam is needed lol, on the positive side, at least i found this problem before something worse happened!

Repairable? maybe, get a competent shop to weld your busted journal and tunnel bore it back out.

Or if its easier get a new head, your lucky you didnt break your cam and eat your engine worship.gif

Would be a tricky one to repair

    • Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.
    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.  
    • Careful with posts like that around here without the flame suit on @cobo_11! 馃槀馃槀 My 330i journal is on here too. That car was so good and super reliable. We still have a 130i in the family which is almost identical to the 330i and easier to find in manual. It has also been almost faultless over the 6 or so years in the family.  I used to want an M car a lot more than I do now but if I'm honest and without trying to sound like a wanker, I can get such good performance and handling out of my 335 without needing to worry about all the crap that goes along with M car ownership. I don't need to worry about my bearings or subframe issues or the cost of replacing brakes or suspension or whether it has been impeccably maintained. And I can leave it places and not get upset when it's always filthy.

    • Great write ups / details / photos. I'm sort of on the road to E90 ownership (325i or 330i), haven't hit the fork in the road yet "Yes" | "No", and some of the issues you've faced have me nervous for the age these are getting to nowadays (that wiring, jesus), but I'm guessing the pro's of ownership are still outweighing the con's? Of course, if the bloody tattslotto ROI actually went my way...E90 M3. And I'd have the cash to do all the extra lovely maintenance THOSE require. 馃槃
